Maria Satterwhite Memorial Cemetary, 8th bell
It wasn't very long ago that tragedy struck Zeltiva's streets. The city was isolated and protected by its environment; violence in the streets wasn't quite so common as in other cities in the region. There was one way into the city by land, allowing a good line of defense against undesirables from across the continent, leaving the rest to the watchers by the port. All in all, it wasn't easy to enter the city without someone knowing you were coming and it saved them a lot of trouble, suffice to say. Even so...
Four casualties. Two civilians slain in the east street with unclear motive, along with a rookie Waveguard by the name of Gino. The killer hadn't been captured after the fact and it was already too late to save the victims when reinforcements arrived. Another Waveguard, Zivilist Gott, had been present at the time of the murders and was allowed temporary leave from his duties to recover from the tragedy. ... Sadly, his recovery was cut short by the death of another Waveguard. Kip.
... Kip. He was slain in the middle of the night under mysterious circumstances. Wounds indicate he was battling for his life before being sent to his demise by a blade through his torse followed by the slicing of his throat. After his death, he was hung by his neck from a nearby tree and the word "W E A K" had been carved into his chest. It had caused quite an uproar amongst the Waveguards reaching the scene before the body could be taken down and transported elsewhere. Zivilist Gott had been the first to arrive and attracted more attention to the scene with his frenetic screaming. The timing of the deed couldn't have been much worse seeing as he'd only just returned after his leave, and sources say Gott was planning something along with Kip for the following day.
No traces of the killer were found in either of the two cases. In both, Zivilist had been involved in some way.
The chime of the eight bell caused Nenat to look up. For the past bell or so, she'd been standing in the midst of a pathway in the cemetary, waiting and reviewing everything she knew about the situation at hand. She'd been handed this little petch of a dilemma less than three bells ago when the previous canditate had woken her up from her restless sleep due to stomach issues. As frustrated as she'd been, she could hardly blame them for backing out of this nor could she blame their stomach from turning inside-out from the stress and anxiety. The situation was dire and whoever was willing was called upon for support to the most shaken of the Waveguard. Nenat had arrived at the cemetary to meet up with the previosly mentioned Zivilist Gott; the man who saw each of the victims first-hand. Considering the information she'd been given, one might suspect she'd came here to interrogate him.
Such was not the case. The Waveguard didn't run such a tight policy. At least not yet. In the light of recent events, things were subject to possible change in the near future, though nothing was for certain yet. Nenat wasn't going to take bets on it, though she doubted any real changes were bound to actually set in anytime soon. It seemed to sudden. Perhaps the recent events were little more than bad luck; there was so far nothing speaking for anything more. W E A K.
Her brow furrowed. It was a message, alright. Even so, it was too early to make anything of it and she knew how pointless it'd be to linger on it; she knew what she'd be like if she allowed herself to overthink it ahead of time. All she knew was that they'd died. Four people, in a relatively short span of time.
Nenat hadn't been a member of the Waveguard for long. Less than a year. Even so, she'd been dedicated to her responsibilities and was a trustworthy enough individual to be assigned to this kind of situation. ... Granted, she had her apprehensions about it. First of all, she was tired. Secondly, she had no prior knowledge of the man she was supposed to meet past his involvement in the deaths. The Waveguard wasn't a particularly large force and didn't have so many members; Gott and her had probably crossed paths more than once. They're all just faces, however. Faces without names. This was one face about to be given a name--though, just one face amongst many.
The stocky, blonde woman stood there, dressed in her azure uniform with the shield resting against her leg as she leaned against a lantern post in a fairly central location in the cemetary. ... She didn't pick this location. Her forerunner had chosen it when setting the date with Gott, and the logic behind the decision eluded her. It seemed a fairly depressing locale for such a meeting; especially when the purpose was to inspire morale. It didn't help that the weather was looking grim this morning, either. No signs of Syna just yet--the clouds were thick, keeping the temperatures on the down low. There was no snow, though there were hints of unthawed frost on the fences and the rim of the unlit lantern hanging above her head. It'd probably be gone as temperatures rose again further on in the day, though they were still proof of the season in this place. To recap, this day was cold, dark and damp. This wasn't a very healthy combination, and once the thought struck her... Bam, there's the itch in her nose.
She sniffed. ... And reached a hand up to rub against the side of her nose, subtly scratching the inside while she was sure no one was looking. It shouldn't be too long now before Zivilist was supposed to be here.
