Character Concept

I don't like to talk about my past...

My past one sob story after another. I was born- from what I understand it is a painful process, likened to death in many ways. My mother struggled through it to bring me life- I imagine there was pride between her and my father, assuming he was present, or aware of my existance. Five years after my birth, my mother sold me. The only thing I remember of her is a smile- a beautiful sunray of a smile attached to these words: "Don't hate me, child- when you grow up, you'll understand." She did not look back when she walked away.

I don't know how much I was sold for. I hope it was worth it.

For seven years thereafter I was moved from place to place sold here and there, hooded and transported, fed and beaten. It is a strange life if you wish to call it such, to be a possession. Slavery is a crime- I agree with this, however the true crime is not in the slavery itself, but in the dehumanization that rides alongside slavery. A slave is not a human. A slave is groomed for a task, to guard, to serve, to lift, to protect. When I was twelve, I was groomed to guard. I was sold to a family in Sunberth, to guard the child of a decently wealthy family. It was the only job I had that didn't feel degrading.

I was not subject to the sexuality of my master, I was not made a joke of. I was trained, and made to protect the child of a wealthy family. As payment, I was allowed to learn to read and write, as well as the trade of guarding. I was no longer a slave- I was a shield and I prized that role.

All was well for a few years. When I turned 18, the child I guarded was named a man, and began to make his own choices. I still blame myself for his errors. He was soft hearted, soft hearted for Sunberth, and sensing his weakness, rivals awaited a misstep that would weaken the family as a whole.

They did not have to wait long.

That night still haunts my memory- waking to the heat of a fire, inhaling the blackened smoke of burning bodies, of what I called a family. Fighting desparately through the burning building to find my charge- only to be knocked out once I exited the building with him. It was my lowest point- I had finally become something more than a slave- finally been given a purpose and I had failed. I was a broken man then, and they took me without a fight.

I awoke on a road away from Sunberth, chained and beaten. It was a wonder my body still responded to my commands, pain echoed my every step. Inside, I was empty- empty and broken without hope. It was then that I truly gave up my life to the road.

The road itself was what saved me. I stole a glance at a map one evening and found a location of the Citadel Fortress. I remember tales of the fortress told to me by my charge in Sunberth- he longed to go there, a place where justice and order prevaled, a place where slaves and men were equal. When training him in the art of swordsmanship (I could do no more than teach him the basics as a child) we pretended we were Knights, valiant and true- he wished nothing more than to belong to a place where such noble traits were valued.

I knew I had to go there.

My escape was a bloody one, I slipped from them in the night, killing the two guards that were meant to watch me sleep as payment for what they had done to my friends. That led me to the gates of the city- I am suprised I made it that far. My captors wouldn't dare look for me here, it is the one place I should be safe.
