Caran Daralis

Physical Description
Name: Caran Daralis
Race: Human
Gender: Female
Age: 22
Birthday: 46th Fall 490 AV

In terms of appearance, Caran is unremarkable and when in a crowd she is easily overlooked. From her unkempt brown hair and downcast gray eyes, this is how she prefers it; better to go unnoticed than to cause trouble. Her tanned skin boasts several scars that appear to have been caused by some type of blade, the most prominent of them being a jagged one across her right eyebrow. Being 5'5" and just barely 120 lbs, what she lacks in physical power she makes up in speed and liberal (usually dangerous) use of the Flux. Though she could never be considered beautiful in the classical sense, she emanates a quiet confidence that some find appealing.

Character Concept

Caran, although reserved in nature, has had a burning desire for travel and adventure since a young age. Despite the dangers her parents constantly warned her about beyond the edges of Zeltiva, she jumped at the first opportunity to leave her home. Most would deem this insane, but she's determined to see the world even if it means her death. Driven by this obsession, Caran is willing to take even the most dubious of jobs if it means moving beyond the reaches of whatever city she is currently staying in. When in the company of others she tends to clam up, and only speaks when spoken to. Her manner is somewhat brusque and taciturn, and she tends to avoid small-talk; if it doesn't have anything to do with her current goal she will have none of it. Having grown up in Zeltiva, she is used to most of the other race's mannerisms, although she tends to find the presence of the undead, especially Nuits, unsettling. Unlike most others who have chosen her kind of lifestyle, she is neither rash or gregarious, and is very measured in how she expresses herself. Once one has spent enough time with her, Caran will begin to hint at her passions, revealing the determined yet uncertain young woman beneath her jaded facade.

Character History

One of her earliest memories is the slapping of the constant waves at Zeltiva. She grew up surrounded by the constant comings and goings of people and creatures from distant cities, bringing with them languages both familiar and unfamiliar. Curious, she would talk to her father's customers as he drew up maps to their specifications. They would tell her of places beyond Zeltiva, both strange and beautiful. At night, after her mother had tucked her into bed, she would dream of those far off places, hoping that one day she'd be able to see them with her own eyes. When she could, she'd look over the many maps her father had been working on as he explained to her the rudiments of cartography; Caran would nod her head, trying to please her father with her interest in his craft. In reality she was trying to puzzle out just how far away the cities she'd always heard about were.

While her father immersed himself in his burgeoning map-making business, she and her older brother would flip through their mother's various texts, most of which were on Projection and Glyphing. Both children were aware of Kiadra's days as a student at the University, though she had given up Projection years ago; her useless left arm was a constant reminder of her failure, bound up in a sling, it's fingers unmoving. As her mother, grudgingly, began to teach her older brother the basics of magic, Caran was busy learning the rudiments of cartography from her father. Soon enough she was helping her father around his shop, chatting up his customers about their distant homes, picking up a vague understanding of Fratava and Kontinese in the process.

As soon as her brother turned 18, he enrolled at the University. Kiadra helped him pack as well as she could with one arm, and she watched him leave with something like pride and fear dancing in her gray eyes.Their small apartment suddenly seemed that much emptier without him around, and Caran searched for excuses to be out of the house, and more often than not she'd search for her older brother and talk his ear off about her ambitions of seeing the world. When she was unable to find her brother, Caran hung around the docks, coercing and cajoling the incoming traders into giving her lessons on swordplay. Though she was barely strong enough to lift a true blade, she forced herself through the grudging lessons given to her by the rough and tumble traders, the smell of sea salt still clinging to their skin. Slowly but surely she began to plan her departure from the city.

Having gleaned a novice's understand of the Flux from her brother and the various texts he would bring back home on his infrequent visits, she took to hoarding whatever mizas she could get from her job at her father's cartography business and other odd-jobs she began to run at the docks. Once she had enough, she bought a bastard sword, armor and shield in preparation for whatever lay beyond Zeltiva. After months of hoarding and preparing, she bought passage on a ship leaving for Ravok. Despite having lived next to the sea for most of her life, she had never been on a boat for more than an hour or two; being stuck on one for weeks was taxing, to say the least.

That was five years ago. Caran has only returned to Zeltiva once since setting out to see the world, and she has discovered just how cruel and dangerous the land can be. Yet, despite all the horrors, she has managed to eek out a living and see the cities she'd heard about throughout her childhood. Between acting as a sell-sword, she makes maps and copies works upon request. The money from her most recent job was just enough to bring her to Syliras, only to leave her stranded. Until she's able to scrape enough money together to leave, Caran is stuck within the confines of the city's walls.
