N h e l l e

Kelvic (Fox Squirrel) :: Born: 16th of Winter, 506 AV
6 yrs :: Female

physical description
Nhelle isn't an awfully big woman. Lean and seemingly healthy body standing no taller than 5'5'' with a moderate amount of flesh on her bones which puts her weight up to a not-so-generous 116lbs, her body altogether light with the lack of solid musculature and what seems to be a softer skeleton. Her skin is remarkably pale considering her background and it seems determined to remain that way with attempts gaining more colour often falling short. Long and bordering on spindly limbs end in equally spindly toes and fingers, both thinner and slightly longer than you'd expect in a human being. Don't judge a dog by its fur, though, as they say. Both fingers and toes are stronger than they look with hard nails to boot, giving her a hard and steady grip for someone her size and alleged body strength.

Her face is plump and round, carried by a long and thin neck. Two big hazel eyes emerge from underneath the thick black brows and the black, rugged brush growing atop of her head, sitting on each side of a thin nose which is in turn surrounded by freckles that spread across her cheeks and down to her lips. Hidden behind said lips are a pair of upper-front teeth that are wider and slightly longer than one might be used to when it comes to humans, and these two teeth are quite strong. They don't stand out in an unnatural way, though they are remarkably pronounced and are easy to notice.

When disgarding her human form, Nhelle is a black-coated Fox Squirrel. For a squirrel, her breed is slightly larger and her entire body measures up to 20 inches between the tips of her nose and tail, with the lush, thick and fuzzy tail standing for almost half of that. She weighs no more than 1,4lbs. In this form you can still see the clear hazel in her eyes. All four of her limbs are also naturally gifted with claws and digits to enable her to grip on to and quickly scale sheer surfaces, trees or surfaces with similar texture. Her frame and build allows her, in her animal form, to land softly even when dropped from impressive heights (twenty feet) without sustaining grave injuries.

character concept
Never really having been left on her own for a longer time, Nhelle is learning to survive without someone to look after her or tell her what's what while searching for that one individual somewhere in this life who is hers and hers alone. Being a Kelvic, her need for closeness and servitude drives her on but her long years in life with the lack of actual bonding until recent years has made the process many times more difficult for her as she grows picky and longing for the special kind of bond that lasts the rest of her meager lifetime. While doing her utmost to serve the society she belongs to, she keeps a watching eye out for anyone crossing her path at the whim of fate that she can give the rest of her days to. She's more or less dubbed herself a hopeless romantic to explain her behaviour and fierce longing in a way that makes more sense to her from a human perspective and that's how she treats and thinks about it when it comes to her own desire for a bondmate.

She is patient, however. Watching and waiting, she will continue looking until the one for her finds her, or she finds it. Due to certain events in her life, however, she's very reluctant to leave the city of Zeltiva and has thus limited herself to that area. She knows this, and she's vowen to herself that she'll continue looking for as long as she makes herself stick around to look after the remaints of her former life with the only bondmate she's had, if only for a brief period of time.

All that said, Nhelle is a very inquisitive and open woman who happily embraces the world around her and studies it with great interest. She's never been much of a reader since the opportunity to sit down and study any kind of literature hasn't really shown itself in her life as of yet, though she'd happily listen and inquire in order to broaden her knowledge and perspective on the world. Gifted with a very vivid imagination, spoken accounts are often enough for her to build an accurate image in her mind of things and places she's never been to first-hand and it happens that she tries to scribble these images down with little success as her lack of training in the visual arts has her hands and fingers very clumsy when wielding artistic tools, be it pens or brushes. It doesn't stop her from trying, though.

Being a Kelvic, it's not strange that Nhelle is a remarkably loyal creature. She takes promises very seriously and is extremely obvious when she pays her respect to the individuals that cross her path on a day-to-day basis, staying out of peoples' ways and making things right for herself wherever she can. A day in her life can be very exhausting as a result since she rarely gets a moment's peace of mind when emerging from her home to interact with the world in motion, though she's never found it in herself to complain. It's become part of who she is and identifies herself as. Gifted with a long and immensely detailed memory, Nhelle will keep her promises for a long time and remember the tiniest of details even when the people concerned have forgotten. She'll be sure to remind you if you've forgotten something, too.

Flashbacks :

Winter, 512 AV :

Kelvic Traits
Enhanced Senses: Hearing, smell.

Excellent Vision: Not to be confused with Nightvision. The Fox Squirrel in particular is a diurnal breed and thus has no Nightvision. It only has enhanced vision for... "daily usage".

Housing
Nhelle lives in a small house/apartment close to the port in Zeltiva. Her former bondmate was a sailor and thus kept a home close by for his own convenience so he'd have a place to crash right after a long trip at sea or a long day of working at the docks. Since his disappearence, this is where Nhelle lives and looks after the house even if the former owner will never return again. The house contains a hearth, bunk, chest, chair, and small table. It has a total of four windows, two on the western and southern walls (with the southern windows placed on either side of the door). The other walls lie in connection with the rest of the building complex, and has other rooms and aparments in connection with hers.

The bunk is well looked after and rarely ever used. She keeps it clean and tidy, storing her belongings underneath the bunk while she sleeps in a bedroll on the floor over by the hearth, using a thick blanket during the winter season to not get too cold. Only under extraordinary circumstances does she bring herself to sleep in the bunk, though usually she sticks to sleeping on the floor. Since the former owner disappeared at sea, she has started bringing in old pots into the building to spark some life into the apartment in the absence of other beings by growing plants for... company and decoration. Such pots have been placed out all over the apartment, though they're no bigger than being able to hold basic flowers (part of the Herbalist/Botanist Toolkit). Good enough for Nhelle, though.

history
Nhelle was born in Ahnatep. It was a strange place to be born in for someone like her but it was a completely natural occurrence to the family she was born into. Her mother and her were both Kelvics with her appointed guardian being the bondmate of her mother; an Eypharian who led the household she had been brought into for a life of servitude. Or, at least, that was the plan from the beginning. The Eypharian who led the family, Hnetake, had a very special way of looking after his servants. Her mother certainly didn't mind and never stood up for Nhelle when she showed to be apprehensive about the relationship that Hnetake was trying to form between them, resulting in the first months of her life being thoroughly unpleasant. While Hnetake took out his frustrations on the growing girl, her mother tutored her to better serve the household while licking the bruises to keep her going for just a little bit longer. It didn't quite work out the way that her mother had imagined and Nhelle retreated from the rest of the family, keeping her thoughts to herself much like a kicked puppy. She imagined time would pass much faster if she pretended to remove herself from its flow. Before she knew it, she was becoming a full year old and her body matured immensely. Children in the streets remained children while she grew up before their eyes, becoming a young woman before others born around her barely learned how to stand on their own two feet. It was a strange thing to Nhelle, though her mother continued to assure her that everything would be alright. She would live a happy life there in the household just like her.

That turned out not to be the case. Merchants landed in the ports of Ahnatep to trade their goods from abroad for the valuable materials they could buy in the city. Coming to Ahnatep was always a gamble for them; the Eypharians were not to be trifled with. They valued themselves very highly and the same went for their own crafts and wares. Negotiation was difficult and coming here was usually more of a loss than a gain, though if they hit a stroke of luck later on they might be able to sell what they got for a rather generous price elsewhere. Jerrik, an aging Vantha was on board that vessel that day. He had been travelling the seas for many years and was accustomed to being at the mercy of the waves and the good will of Laviku and his creatures. Being on land made him uncomfortable and today was no different. He staggered off the ship, holding on to the nearest something to keep himself steady as the lack of movement in the ground caused his balance to go out of order. He ran into Nhelle, the girl carrying water and wet laundry back towards the house she lived in. Upon collision, the water was spilled and the laundry rolled about in the dirt covering the streets. Jerrik never even had time to apologize before Nhelle had scrambled to pick up what was left to hurry back home, even if the clothes were dirty. Even if she knew she'd have to come back again and get more water. It was better she went and admitted what had happened right away. Better now rather than later, right?

Jerrik didn't see the girl again until later that same night. The men were getting ready to leave, pulling their carts back to the port to drag them back onto their vessel, when Nhelle came walking by again. She was gathering more water, but she looked to be in a pretty bad shape. Now, Jerrik had been alone for most of his life. He had no wife and no children. No one back home who would wait for him when he returned or take care of his home in his absence. Many had looked upon him with pity as his eyes couldn't veil the grief hidden deep inside, but even so... He remained alone. Until that day, when he scooped Nhelle up from her knees when she was collecting new water. The ship didn't leave port until the next morning, and Nhelle was on that ship when it finally made for the ocean again. Hnetake didn't even give so much as a second thought as he released her from service in exchange for a few pieces of gold.

After that, she spent two years at sea together with Jerrik and his crew. They had a few more stops to make along the way back before this trip was done with, and Nhelle just came along. She never actually spoke with Jerrik much for the duration of the journey, nor did she speak much with the rest of the crew. They seemed to avoid her, and anytime someone was looking her direction it seemed they were compelled to look the other way. She never quite understood why. No one would tell her, either. Not even Jerrik. Those two years at sea was the most lonesome time of her life. People avoided her and Jerrik refused to speak with her past when it would be necessary, so Nhelle was left to her own devices around the ship. She peered through the ship's logs, arranged the stocks underneath the deck, helped stack cannon balls, check the ropes holding the cannons and she occasionally sat up in the mast and gazed out over the never ending blanket of water. Occasionally she would see land, but it usually didn't last for long before the ship pulled back out further into the sea and away from the mainland. Her time on that ship gave her a lot of time to think. Perhaps more than is granted to most Kelvics in that day and age. She mostly sat up there in the mast, curled up against the top with her claws buried in the wood to keep her from falling, with her eyes turned out to the sea. Needless to say, it gave her plenty of times to ponder about the world, herself and the people aboard the ship. Her world was rather small at that time, granted, but she came to know it very well. She wasn't completely useless around the ship. Inbetween taking her time to think, she made sure that her hands came to good use and she did her utmost to be an asset to the crew and Jerrik. It didn't give her any more attention from anyone, but at least it gave her a sense of satisfaction that she could make someone's life a bit easier by taking care of their chores.

Two years after they left Ahnatep, the ship finally returned to the city of Zeltiva. They had made a few stops along the way, but ultimately the ship was scheduled to be put to rest. Jerrik left the ship on wobbly legs and Nhelle, while somewhat disoriented herself, helped him along. He introduced her to his little home near the port and allowed her to stay there for the time being provided she wouldn't get in his way. So she didn't. She slept on the floor by the foot end of his bed and made sure never to get in his way. She helped him around his house and carried out any chores she noticed that he forgot, essentially becoming his nursemaid over time. He appreciated the help. She could tell as much. Back in Ahnatep, it was difficult to tell what people were thinking. Somehow, she always knew, after a while, what Jerrik needed and what he was thinking at the time. She had his eyes to thank for that. The colours shifted often but seemed to stay somewhere in the dark spectrum. While she came to understand the pattern in the shifts, she never did come to fully understand that darkness that she could see deep inside those deep eyes of the Vantha sailor. However, she grew attached. Jerrik was, at the time, the only human being in her life. Someone she valued greatly and someone who would accept her in his presence. It didn't take a long time until the two of them bonded and grew closer, by the time she was four years old.

It was a great relationship between them. As time went by, Jerrik started to open up more to her. Tell her more about himself and his life before he came to Zeltiva. She became a confidante; someone that he trusted with the whole of his heart. He became very protective of her, even to the extreme. One day when they were out in the port, working, Nhelle recalls that she asked him a question about his life on the sea. Her memory is rather scrambled of that particular event, but she vaguely remembers the sensation of drowning. She never did die, but she woke up two days later inside Jerrik's home. He warned her of the dangers of the open seas and pleaded to her that she never pursue a life like his. He wouldn't even have had to ask; whatever happened that day in the port, it made Nhelle terrified of the ocean even to the present day.

Half a year ago, Jerrik left. He headed out at sea and forbade Nhelle from coming with him. She was to stay in Zeltiva and watch over his home--make sure that it was in good shape when he returned. He told her that it wouldn't take too long, and so Nhelle did what she was told. She kept the house clean and in order, his bed the way that he had left it, and she sat out at port every night since he left to watch the horizon and wait for his ship to return. She was worried for his safety, and rightly so. Only half a season after he left, Nhelle woke up in the middle of the night as she felt his calling from somewhere out in the ocean. Distressed, she ran out to the port and sat down in her regular spot, watching the horizon all through the night and into the morning after, listening to the cries of her heart as she felt the bond slowly dissolve into nothing as Jerrik, somewhere out there, was lost to her forever. Suffice to say, she was devastated. Retreating back to his home, she continued to tend to it for the rest of the season and well into the next, making sure it was still in order as if she was still waiting for him to return back home. After a while, she came to realize and accept that he was gone. It was a struggle for her, but she managed to at least convince herself that she should move on with her life and make the most of her time for her own sake, and the city of Zeltiva.
