Obadiah Kairn

Appearance

Race: Nuit (Everwalking)
Gender: Originally male
Age: 461
Birthday: 11, Spring, 52 AV.
Birthplace: Sylira, underground near Sunberth

Appearance: Varies, currently inhabiting the body of a twenty-five year old human male. Body is in good health, however the typical signs of a Nuit are present. The body is nothing much to look at, rather ordinary.

Character Concept

Obadiah Kairn is, as can be expected of a Nuit, cold and merciless, and very driven. He is sturbborn, paranoid and verging on the brink of madness, but also fairly intelligent and knows how to hide his nature from common folk. He is a wizard, or rather was in his former life, and still retains small fractions of the knowledge he once possessed. However, since becoming a Nuit he has been gone into a very, very long state of depression and denial, and has either forgotten much of what he once knew or simply tucked it away in the back of his mind.

However, he has finally decided to step into the sun's light again, harnessing his deep hatred for his own race and the living who shun him as a driving force to find a cure for the Nuit, a way to return among the living. A way to breath yet again.

Character History

Obadiah was born 52 years after the Valterrian. His parents, Maria and Aaron Kairn, were both reputable and powerful wizards, both noble people who did their best to help others. They were the leaders and protectors of a small band of survivors, a small community in which desperate, battered people tried to forget their troubles and revert back to the way they used to live. Raising families, laughing, living their lives. Of course, it was hard to forget the event that wiped out all civilization but they tried. The community gradually grew as nearby people sought out protection from the dangers that lurked around every corner of this new world.

Maria Kairn, Obadiah's mother, was an expert on medicine and history, she would spend countless hours reading and rereading books in an effort to further her knowledge. She was a practiced healer, and if man made medicine wouldn't fix it, she would try magic. She tried to get Obadiah interested in both subjects, but her attempts failed. Not utterly, he did read the books she gave him but only rarely shared her passions for them.

Aaron Kairn, Obadiah's father, was a researcher. He spent all his spare time experimenting on anything he laid his hands on. Obadiah shared his fathers fascination with magic and science, usually helping his father with his experiments. However, his father was also very skilled in Reinmancy, and used it to fend off any threats to the community.

Thus Obadiah Kairn was brought up in better conditions than most, and also with a much better education. The universal language of the community was what is now known as "middle common", and this would later allow Obadiah to quickly pick up the modern version of it rather quickly. He was also fluent in the Kontinesse language and rather good at that of the Vani thanks to Rani'va, and Konti who was very close friends with the Kairn family. Eli, daughter of Rani'va, became a very close friend to Obadiah, and later on they would become lovers.

But tragedy struck, as it inevitably did in those days. Whilst fighting of a small group of bandits, Aaron lost control of his own magic and perished in flames, taking the bandits with him. His body was consumed by fire, and his ashes were never found. They couldn't even give him a proper burial...

The death of his father touched Obadiah profoundly. He locked himself in his fathers "study" for days, coming out only to help fight off any more threats or to eat. Only Eli could manage to talk to him, and even then only for a few minutes before he would break down and close up again. The people began to panic, as it was thought that when Aaron passed away, his son would take his place as protector. The community began to break down, trust and friendship turning into suspicion and hatred. Many left, going on to find other communities to live in. Attacks by bandits or other creatures began to take their toll, and famine became a lot more frequent.

When Obadiah finally left the confines of his mind, he found the people he loved, the community he had grew up in, desolated and broken. His mother passed away a few months after, at the age of 72, and Obadiah attended the funeral swearing he would make up for his mistake. But it was too late. The next day, the wizards came. They slaughtered the women and children like cattle, and took the men as slaves. Eli was spared, as Konti slaves were a luxury to have.

The leader of the small group of wizards was a master Animator, also human, named Steine Frak, but Obadiah would never know his name. Frak needed test subjects for his experiments. He returned the prisoners to his base of operations, a small tower above the surface, and began. Around 50 men had been captured, and 40 of them would be used as slaves while the other 10, deemed to have the strongest minds of the group, would be strapped to the alter one by one as Frak attempted to turn them into Nuit. He kept Obadiah for last, judging that his mind was strongest and so would have a better chance at surviving the ideal.

And indeed he was right. All died but Obadiah, some from mistakes in the ritual, others because they were not strong enough to survive.

But Frak underestimated Obadiah. He quickly wanted to test how a Nuit adapted to another body. He undid the straps, took a step back and realized his mistake at the last minute. Obadiah was full of rage, anger and hatred, something that had been building up as he got over the death of his father. He used his straps to strangle the master wizard, then fell to the floor and, for the next few hours, just stayed quiet, contemplating what he had become.

Finally, he stood up. He dragged the the nearby corpse to the middle of the laboratory, and began the ritual he didn't even know he knew. He grabbed the knife that had been used to slay the bodies as the soul departed from them during the Daek-nuit, and sliced open the arm of a man who had failed to survive the experience. He dipped his finger in the blood of the man and painted the runes onto Frak's body. He crawled onto the body, opening it's mouth and his own, and the ichor slowly poured into the corpse. Obadiah was disgusted by this, but it was as if he had been doing this all his life. The conflicting thoughts would, later on, push him further more into the pit of insanity that would consume his mind for nearly 400 years.

When the exchange was complete, Obadiah stood up. However, immediately after standing up he fell back down. He tried to snarl, tried to open his mouth to form words, but it was as if he just couldn't. The answer came to him again, as if he had known this his entire life. He had to adapt to this body before he could use it. So he waited.

Eventually he managed to stand up, sliding the knife into the robes his body wore and left the room. A wizard stood their, looking relieved at the sight of his master. He stepped forward, about to talk, but saw how pale the body before him was, the dark bags under his eyes. He opened his mouth, about to ask what had happened, and Obadiah stuck the knife into his belly. He pushed the man off the knife, which slid off and thumped onto the ground. He heard a scream. He heard shouts. Crying. Punches? Someone was beating something. He walked towards the noise, venturing through a door.

Eli was on the floor, another wizard looming over her. He had been shouting, she had been crying. He had been hitting, she had been screaming. The man looked towards Obadiah, smiled and made a joke, then laughed and died. Obadiah had tried to dash across the room, but could only manage a limp. It was enough, and the man stepped back, a puzzled look on his face as his hands rose to his bloodied neck. He fell, dead before he hit the ground.

Obadiah turned to Eli, tried to explain what had happened but she refused to listen, ignoring him defiantly. He cut the ropes that bound her, trying to prove he meant her no harm, but was rewarded with a kick to the knees and a swift uppercut that sent him to the ground. She tried to run, but he grabbed her ankle, she fell, he shouted at her, she kicked back, right into his face. She quickly got up, ran quickly to the door and, for an unknown reason, glanced back. The man before her was crying, his hands covering his face as he rocked back and forth muttering incomprehensible phrases. She spoke, uttering a few simple words in Kontinese, "I'll be here for you". The same words she had repeated to him again and again after the death of his father. He raised his head, his eyes sparkling with hope, opened his mouth to utter the response he always gave to that sentence, and watched her die.

It all happened too quickly for him to comprehend. She stumbled forward, her face a mixture of pain and surprise, blood trickling from her mouth. A patch of blood spread on her clothing, expanding to encompass her upper body. She fell, the only sound coming from the noise her body made as it hit the ground. Behind her, a man with a bow was standing, the bow obviously pointing at the doorway. He lowered his bow, walked forward. His mouth was opening and closing, sounds emanating from it. Obadiah screamed, a scream of pure anger that actually managed to frighten the man before him, and he raised his hand. It seemed to literally explode as a stream of fire was set loose on the bowman, hitting him in the chest and sending him backwards, his torso ripped open and burnt to a crisp.

Obadiah kept on screaming. His, or rather, the corpse's hand had been consumed by the flames, imploding on itself and finally destroying itself. His father had always told him Reimacy could be dangerous. Then there was the women he loved, dead on the floor. He himself was covered in blood and dirt, his clothes being licked away by the flames. He stayed there for what seemed like an eternity, just screaming and sobbing.

The next day, he took hold of another corpse, one of the 9 that had died in the laboratory. He set off into the wild, into the dangerous new world. No, not new. This was the world he had been born into. A world of pain and death, of war and plague. Of screaming, constant screaming.

For the first fifty years he wandered, trying to keep sane. He changed bodies, trying to steal corpses from the dead or bad. After the fifty year mark as a Nuit, he didn't care and stole the bodies from anyone around. The next hundred he stayed near a village, becoming the local "bigfoot", integrating himself into local folklore as a monster. He tried to speak to the living, tried to make friends, tried to tell stories. He was shunned, though, as soon as they knew what he was. Chased off, treated as a common beast.

After that he moved from shelter to shelter. Solitude was his friend. Night was his companion. Insanity consumed him, as did his hatred for the living and, curiously enough, himself. He hated the Nuit, and this lead him to hate himself.

Then one day, in the Winter of 513 AV, he decided enough was enough. It seemed as if though something in his mind just snapped on, as if remnants of his old self had finally been allowed to have their say. He began to want to find a cure for his condition, a way to live again. And so he needed to learn. When he was himself, in the old days, he was probably counted among the smartest wizards in the world, thanks to his mother and father teaching him everything they knew. But that was a long, long time ago. He had either chose to forget those days, locking them away so as not to experience the pain and suffering again, or very simple forget them.

This means he needs to learn again. But where will someone like him learn the ways of magic?

Note: I'm not sure about the Lore or housing so please correct me if I made mistakes.

I don't see any "Research" skill, as my PC is a researcher, or wishes to become one, but if I'm mistaken can someone please point me towards it?

Foolish are those who fear nothing, yet claim to know everything.
Brave are they who know everything yet fear nothing.

If you don't expect gratitude, you'll seldom be disappointed.
