The Pursuit of Profit

89th of Winter, 512 AV :

As a fully matured, unbound Kelvic there are few subjects Auni is more versed in than independence. Not all freedoms are as greats as they appear to be though. There is always a trade off lurking around the corner; such is the way of life. For example the pressures that follow those with the supposed privilege of answering to no one besides themselves. They may not have to comply with others' wishes but they do occasionally feel a certain disquiet when there is a lack of people to blame when things go wrong.

However there is something rather useful born from a situation such as this. Appropriately named self reliance. An attribute that is as hard to come by as the most precious of gems and is therefore just as valuable. Especially for those of Kelvic descent who naturally feel the need to depend on another for various reasons.

As far as this young woman is concerned there is rarely a need to fret. After all, she is equipped with skills that make her capable to take care of herself. Even now, with the Winter Season coming to a close in only a few days Auni is assuring that her coin purse has some extra padding for her upcoming adventures. And when the task is as comfortable as hunting is for her then there is even less to complain about. In fact, hunting was a habit. As close to second nature as any craft she had. As it should be.

Despite her slightly civilized disposition she is wild at heart. The ocelot portion of her soul requesting, no, requiring that she exercise her senses in such a way. While some people would misunderstand her love for hunting as a barbaric or even sadistic connection it could not be farther from the truth. For her hunting was not just the thrill of a kill but an activity that allowed her to feel alive, harnessing all her natural abilities. Yes, there was the benefit that it provided food for herself and others. Not to mention the gold she aimed to make with these particular catches.

The animals on her list of prey? Just about anything that moved. Birds, squirrels, wild boars, and when she wanted a particularly pleasing challenge a wolf or bear. Still she had exceptions. She refused to harm the wildlife that was young and healthy. Not simply because it was frowned upon in the Spirian community but also her personal moral standards found it ridiculous. Why waste a life when there is no reason to? So, she would stick to her strict rule for as long as it was plausible.

There were times, certain circumstances when she found the need to renege on her regulations. One that happened to be taking place currently. You see, she has a soft spot for felines of all kind. Even more tenderness harbored for those that share her undomesticated status. However, there was a limit to her kindness. A limit that she was barely balanced on.

A bobcat had been trailing her for roughly forty five chimes. At first, a relatively small inconvenience was now becoming a problem. An annoyance she could no longer discard as innocuous. The big cat was making it's presence known without scruple and consequently made Auni's just as obvious. This was exceedingly difficult hunting conditions and she found her patience was wearing thin. Never a good sign for those on the receiving end of her temper.

Perhaps it was time her claws were cut loose. Literally.

The Pursuit of Profit

Postby Auni on February 26th, 2013, 10:44 pm

Auni was, is, and always will be a prideful person. A characteristic transcendent of her kinship with felines, which as most people know are some of the most fickle beings to walk the lands of Mizahar. While she would not be one to disagree with that, Auni takes the word to a completely different extent. One that most think foolish. Regardless of opinions to the contrary there are a handful of undeniably admirable traits that can be derived from such superiority.

The most relative of which is persistence. More accurately her persistence in maintaining a representation that she is content to uphold. This does not mean she refuses to participate in unlawful activities. No, quite the contrary actually. She has values, even a few that would be frowned upon by society, but she upholds them with a rigorous dedication. Even so there are times when it is nigh on impossible to do just that. It is in these incidents alone that she wavers. A candle of self integrity that despite the temporary unbalance caused must first flicker from a breeze before it can ultimately be bolstered.

While she wishes for the opposite she must take action against the bobcat that continued to trail her. No need for her to ruin an otherwise perfect hunting expedition, and possibly cripple her ability to fulfill a duty, for the simple excuse that she did not have the heart. She had heart, of that there was no doubt. Auni would go on for a little longer, turning away from the mental path she had planned earlier. If she did not the scuffle would alert potential prey to the battle between predators. After she had traveled a satisfactory distance the woman would come to an abrupt halt.

Exactly one bell would pass before she turned to confront the wild animal. However what greeted her eyes was slightly disappointing. In her imagination she had pictured the beast to be large and ferocious, a fight fitting for someone of her skill range. Instead she was given what appeared to be an elder of the species. A pity in comparison. Still it would be unwise for Auni to leave the cat to it's own devices. If another predator did not take advantage of the weakness that is age then the bobcat would continue to stalk humans in the hopes of achieving an easy meal and that would lead to even worse situations. Ones she held no interest in being responsible for.

So the young Kelvic would find herself at the cross roads of a decision. An ultimatum of sorts. Two choices, neither of which she was fond of. On one hand she could attempt to tame this feral feline, transforming it into a companion so that the last of it's days could be served in comfort. But that thought left her mind as quickly as it had entered. Auni knew that even if the cat was submissive enough to concede to the lifestyle that came with being a pet it would be a fate far worse than death for them. The reason being as simple as dignity. However the other option was just as distasteful. Auni would have to kill a fellow.

With a deep breathe and the sound of her ancient flametongue being drawn from within the folds of her clothing turned the atmosphere into one of sinister sadness. Auni did not feel overwhelmingly guilty for her actions, guilt rarely resided within a conscious such as hers. But she did dislike when her hand was forced, it gave her a sense of helplessness. She even found herself procrastinating, the seconds ticking by as she watched the crippled cat where is was stationed in the shadows.

A thin smile pulled her pink lips apart as she assessed the easiest death sentence. The answer was hardly evasive and she searched herself for a piece of jerky she kept for times when her shape shifting kindled her hunger. Slinging it towards the bobcat she waited with a patient resignation for the bait to be taken. It took less time than she thought, the creeping cat sneaking out of it's hiding spot to snatch the morsel. With a final, brief curse sent into the air Auni threw her tiny dagger in the same fashion as the meat. The smooth arc sinking the tip of blade far into the neck.

The female crossed as quickly as her strides could carry her, drawing the dagger out and insuring that no life was left within the poor creature. Upon closer inspection she found that her choice was a good one. The small beast was a bit thinner than normal and it's the next person to pass it might not be just a target but a victim. A shake of her head brought her back into an upright stance. Her earlier deviation had diminished enough of the distance between her and the Gilding she owned. A piercing whistle and Marble should begin heading this way. Should...
