Appearance
One is hard pressed to call Matt a rugged fellow; unfortunately or fortunately for him, the young man kept his boyish features well past puberty. Yet he stands tall and is perhaps a bit gangly at 6'2 with only 150 pounds to his frame, but one would never be able to guess his height with the way the young man slouches and hunches. His jaw may not be chiseled like so many other growing young lads, but at least the man has a thin beard and mustache under the large nose and around those full lips, should he ever abandoned his routine of shaving. Under an often neatly combed bit of brown-red hair a pair of green eyes peer out, hooded by a wire framed pair of eye glasses. The corrective glass helping him see the fine details of his work. Matt's hands, arms and back are a testament to that work, scars and callouses on his hands from work, while his arms and back appear toned from repetitive labor of the craft.

Character Concept
To say the Matt is curious is similar to saying the water is wet. The young carver spent more time in his childhood questioning everything around him. He spent much of his time in the library or sneaking into lectures at the university as a child. Much of it went over his head as youth, but that insatiable thirst to know and learn was never quenched. This lends itself to a mild and focused naivety towards what others find interesting. Even now, tempered as a young adult the craftsman still desires to know, still spending his free time in the libraries (though he no longer sneaks into lectures).

Despite his intense curiosity, he has a strict, almost obsessive work ethic that lets him delve deep within his own ponderous thoughts as he works. He is definitely someone that would never willingly go back on his word. Combined, this intense drive and his curiosity naturally gravitates him to the arcane. Of course if he could, he would give up his craft for unraveling the secrets to the fabric of reality itself.

Unfortunately the man is a bundle of issues, constantly getting in his own way. Certainly he wears his masks well, often showing happiness when torn apart on the inside with feelings of unworthiness and sadness or perhaps masks of polite interest in other's stories when his thoughts unwittingly turn upon himself in a self-absorbed, self-loathing at his past mistakes and sins. With an absent mother and a now dead father, he has little in the way of familial comforts to assuage his mental and emotional pain. With a crushing debt hanging over his head, only the work of his hands and the deep, ponderous, and if not, rambling thoughts of his curiosity and intellect keep him from cracking.

He in general is an observant, inquisitive young man, who finds pleasure in meeting new people, making friends and engaging in light conversation. Yet, his distrust of intimacy hinders him in making any long term and meaningful connections. He even has trouble spending any length of time around women, not because he has no interest or any sort of sexism, but because of his deep rooted distrust with any sort of motherly or even feminine figure in his life.

Character History
Not long ago a single child was born to a master carver and his wife. For the father, the child was a blessing from the gods, for the mother the baby boy was a source of anxiety and guilt. The carver never suspected. He had no need, for the child was his own, flesh and bone. Yet in the mind of the the wife of the carver there was a worm of doubt, gnawing in the back of her mind. This of course did not stop her, and after every "errand trip" that worm grew and ate more of the woman's mind. Eight years later she left without a word to either man nor child, devastating them. Years later they would find out that she also left the other, but never did they find the fate of Mattias' mother.

Mattias was an attentive and obedient son to the strict but compassionate Master Carver. The young child had many questions for his father on why or how on the things he saw and learned much. That curious mind could not be contained to the art of woodworking however; when he was not playing with the neighborhood kids or attending and assisting his father he was at the University, sneaking into classrooms (obvious by his age that he didn't belong but good-naturedly humoured) and reading the tomes.

Jacek (jay-sehk) was not oblivious to his son's insatiable appetite to know more. He actively encouraged it. On several occasions he bargained with university officials to tutor his young boy in exchange for commissions of his craft. While Mattias could not spare any time out of his master and father's shop for formal classes, the tutoring in the evenings gave him a start in various subjects such as mathematics, writing, and other more interesting subjects like glyphing and animating. For the university, it was in their best interests to have a craftsman with a basic knowledge of their needs; to understand the grave necessity for precision in certain areas and exact specifications without asking to many questions was a skill that was ultimately taught to Mattias.

The previous season the city was under siege by virulent diseases and Jacek was one of the many who fell sick and died. On his death bed the man wanted to tell his son something, but every time he tried to talk, he was overcome with fits of coughing, phlegm, blood and shredded lung going into a porcelain bowl next to him. He died without ever telling him what he so desperately wished to tell him. Mattias never found a will and had no money, his father's partner took over the shop and took Mattias as an apprentice, but expected him to pay for rent. With only his father's friend and co-shop owner (now sole shop owner) to look after him and with his father's house and his savings gone, Mattias must find away to scrape by.
