Bird

Proud of Your Boy?

Name: I've been given the name of Bird.
    Race: Kelvic [Mockingbird]
    Gender: Male.
    Age: 4 years old.
Birthday: 56th of Fall, 509 AV
[Bird himself is unaware of this though, only knowing he was born in Fall of 509 AV]
    Birthplace: Ravok

I can't make myself taller, or stronger, or handsome or wise. . .

In animal form, which is the one Bird has been confined to most of his life, is a small mockingbird. With a creamy underbelly, and grey top, he is quite plain to look at. Black bars at intercepted with some white stripes on his wings, which are pure white underneath, with the same barring on his tail feathers. Dark black eyes glow with a mild curiosity for the world, and a determined fire that burns in every slave's heart.

In human form, Bird is under-developed, awkward and thin. Prominent face bones make him look gaunt, as he was underfed, while his body has no muscle mass nor fat to cover bony knobs and joints. Clothes hang off him, and he walks with a downcast stoop of someone who is often hunched over. Scars trickle down his lanky back, for the only times he was allowed to change into his human form was for beatings. They criss-cross his chest and arms, glittering pale little marks that Bird can remember when each one cut into his pasty skin. Black hair falls over a dark gaze, limbs often twitching as though about to take off. In his human form, he often wishes he could.

Call me a goldbrick, a goof-off, no good; but that couldn't be all that I am

Bird doesn't have an expansive personality, usually a reflection of those he is around. Though there are the instinctual drives of eating, sleeping, and keeping himself clean, Bird is really only passionate about finding another master. The light bonds that have broken again and again are usual, and he's able to move past them, but after yet another is rejected by his master, Bird strives harder to please and find a new one. The only other thing that occurs to him is making his mother proud, though now that she is presumably dead, Bird finds it difficult to keep her intentions in mind when the built-in need and strengthened will to find a master overpower.

Say I'm slow for my age, a late bloomer, okay! I agree

His first light bond was to Brenin's daughter, then to Tayvin, though now he is bondless.

Water flows under the bridge, let it pass, let it go

Bird was born in Ravok into a life of slavery from a bear-Kelvic breeding-slave, and some unknown Kelvic male that never came up in Bird's life. When he changed into his animal form a few days after birth, a small mockingbird that trilled songs of the birds around it, the slave-holder [Brenin] came up in an idea. Brenin was devious smart, always wanting the highest price, and the dim-witted slaves. He allowed the Kelvic to stay with its mother for the first few months, producing the maternal bond that neither of them could repress.

When the two of them began to rely of each other for sanity within the world they lived in, Brenin took the child away. Forcing him to shift into his Kelvic form, he was trapped within it, and his flight feathers clipped. Wings bedraggled, confused and lost, the bird was given to Brenin's eight-year old daughter, with whom the bird formed his first bond with. It was light, and weak, but the little Kelvic was dubbed "Bird" and taken good care of.

She became bored of Bird soon after he learned how to fly through hoops, and basic commands of "stay", "fly there", "sing", and the like. When she rejected him and broke the bond, Bird was given back to his mother to cope. She had never bonded before, and couldn't offer much advice, though Bird found some contentment in spending time with her.

The drive to find another bondmate though grew stronger, and Bird was sold to another slaver near-by, successfully bonding with his new master, Tayvin. Tayvin began to use Bird as a messenger, forcing him to learn the streetplans, then names, then locations, relating them all into one. It took a long time for the lost little Kelvic, though the strive to be useful and wanted by his bondmate forced him to focus at the young age of one to complete the loose training. Many of his scars are from those long months. Bird was allowed to visit his mother twice a month, as they wished him to remain loyal to her, which he irrevocably was. Under the threat of her painful death, Bird began to run messages, the small bird able to keep out of sight and fly quickly through the city.

In one of his meetings, his mother spoke to his quickly and quietly. Her eyes begged understanding. Bird sat there, silent, and curious, little bird head tilted as his mother's voice filled his ears. She told him to leave. To fly with the next message, and never return to Ravok. They had imprinted his hand, but if he stayed within his animal form no one would ever know. He just had to leave. Find a person who might pay him to be a messenger, and he could live somewhere nice. Find a good master. Bird was confused, and though he shook his head, his mother insisted. She wanted to die. She needed to. Having child after child was taking a toll, and she was beginning to miscarry, and not all of them were Kelvic as they began to get lazy and try breeding her with human slaves. She wanted him to leave. He couldn't break his bond though. His loyalty to his master outweighed it, and Bird refused, confused as to why his mother would ask him.

His mother asked him to do it for her. For the loyalty he felt to her. For their love, and their trust, and the joy they managed to find in each other. Bird tilted his little head where he perched on his mother's finger, and listened as she leaned close, eyes full of tears and whispered, "Little Bird, in a way, I am your master too. You have to obey me, I am you mother. Listen closely, for this is something you cannot refuse to do."

She ruthlessly played on the servant part of Bird that did every command asked of him, pairing it with the devotion he did feel to his mother and the wish to please her and make her proud. It was odd, in his young and confused mind to have two masters, one he was bonded to, and the other was someone he liked to be around.

His next message sent him across Ravok to another slave-master. Halfway there, Bird escaped. He flew away from Ravok, and determinedly thought of his mother personally cutting the bond between him and his master. She was his master too, and she demanded it of him! Bird lived on complete instincts, feeding when hungry, drinking when thirsty, and flying in the direction of whatever flock he managed to keep up with.

That's when he came to Zeltiva, the busy city of scholars and words. And, lots of birds! He settled in with a group of mockingbirds, slowly accepted as one of their own though it took many days to gain their trust. He had lots of time though. Lost, exhausted, and viewed as odd midst the birds, Bird tried to find a new master, but his feathers had begun to hide his thin collar, and people just thought him an annoying little bird ... but that's not all he is ... (right?)
