IZHA LASTTIDE

Race: Drykas, formerly Svefra
Gender: Female

Appearance: Izha is short for the blood of a Svefra, only 5'5" (or 5'7" if she's the one telling you) and 125 pounds. Her normally fair skin is tanned not from her time at sea but from the years she has spent in the Ruby clan, riding the grasslands. Her dark brown hair has one small wind-braid weaved into it, in addition to a larger braid crowning her head. However, her hair isn't as long as the average Drykas due to her recent slavery– she was required to keep it short. Izha has a single, simple windmark girdling her waist, earned after 3 years with the Drykas, when her strider chose her. Izha's most unusual feature is her left eye. Unlike her Svefra kin, instead of having two blue eyes, Izha has one. The other is a shade of gold unheard of in normal Svefra, is much worse-sighted than its deep blue partner, and the skin surrounding it is marked by a thick scar running from the base of the bridge of her nose down under her eye, all the way to her temple.

Izha wears face paint to disguise these scars, the amount depending on her mood. It ranges from nothing to simple black circles around both eyes to a full coat of white with intricate patterns on top.

Character Concept

Izha is finally at home among the Drykas. Where before, she was both figuratively and literally lost at sea, and took her anger out on the people she cared about, she now feels at ease, and while she isn't necessarily carefree, she is less guarded and sullen. She was a good swimmer back when she travelled the Suvan Sea, and this translates to her love for riding in the grasslands. Izha often says that "riding is what keeps her sane."

She attempts to avoid conflict with the Drykas, as she feels as though she owes them for their hospitality. While she feels comfortable begging around most races, especially humans, whom she came to depend on for the first year of her departure from the Svefra, it is in her personal code not to beg for money or food from the Drykas.

Character History

From the moment Izha was born, she was a curiosity. With only half of Laviku's mark, people were at a loss of what to do with her– should she be cast into the sea or kept as a member of her pod? It wasn't that she was abused by her pod- they still thought of her as a Svefra- she was just left alone, something unbearable when one is stuck at sea for their formative years.

Izha never bonded with a Tavan, either. To the contrary, sea animals seemed spooked in her presence and the pod's respective Tavans wouldn't swim nearby when Izha was in the water. She learned to swim in time, and became skilled at it by the time she was 7- but she always swam alone.

By the time she was 12, Izha had become desperate enough to warrant mutilating herself in order to remove her golden eye. After all, she reasoned, there were plenty of one-eyed Svefra, and they were all fully accepted by their pods. Using her pocket knife, she tried to cut her eye out, but before she could blind herself, she had second thoughts. While she froze, a loud noise startled her and the knife slipped, carving a deep gash just below the eye. By the time the wound had scarred, Izha no longer had any intention of losing the eye.

At the age of 15, Izha, armed only with her bare fists and her pod's ceremonial net, abandoned her boat for good after her pod docked in Kenash for trading and supplies. A year of begging taught her to be mistrustful of strangers while still coming to depend on them for her survival. Izha sold herself into slavery when a Drykas pavilion happened to pass through the outskirts of the city.

The slave's life was difficult for Izha, but she learned quickly the pace of things and even made connections among both her fellow slaves and the members of her master's pavilion. After 3 years with the Drykas, Izha had integrated herself into the pavilion- and at long last, a young strider colt bonded with her, to the pleasant surprise of her (former) masters- thus earning her both her windmarks and her freedom as a member of the Ruby clan.
