Lenell stepped out of the University dinning hall, and shoved the booty the kitchen staff had given her--a couple of apples, a wedge of cheese, and a small loaf of bread--into her bag. The food nestled on top of her textbooks. Lining the bottom of her bag were three well cleaned rocks, which she had collected to hold down papers when she studied outdoors while the wind was feeling playful.
She had decided several days ago to try to get herself out into the fine spring weather more often, and had made a search about the campus for a suitable place to combine schoolwork with fresh air. Lenell had had great luck, turning up a wonderful site rather quickly. Tucked away in a quiet corner sat a fixed stone table, lined down both sides with benches of the same make. A lovely little circle of grass and wildflowers grew around it. Best of all, a large tree stood right behind the table, and spread its shadowing branches over her as she read.
Lenell pulled out the contents of her bag as she reached her tiny study park. She stacked her books neatly to her left, making sure the table was clean underneath, and placed her rocks on top of them. She spread her bag out flat to her right and arranged her little bit of a picnic on top of its "clean enough" surface.
Let's see, let's see, she thought. What to do first? Her anthropology professor had started her out with a reading list centered on the Drykas. She felt horribly confused on several points in the different books, and felt she needed to review them all. She fished one out from her pile, and grabbed an apple to munch on as she opened it.
