Known as the Celestial Seat, Nyka is a religious city in Northern Sylira. Ruled by four demigods and traversed by a large crevice, the monk-city is both mystical and dangerous. [Lore]

Repute Information and Listings

Repute!

Nyka is a city symbiotic, and one sectioned into four. Whilst the Aperture has always lent a sort of quasi-sentience to the city, it was at the beginning relatively uniform and passive. Over time the attitudes, beliefs, and will of the people of each Quarter bled into the energies of the city itself and slowly gave rise to a sort of relationship with a Quarter and its denizens. This attitude of the city towards the person eventually gained a name, and is presently as natural to Nykans as rain and wind. Repute is the goodwill (or dislike) a Quarter displays towards an individual, and can be a force of great benevolence (or suffering) for many. Now, you and your PC can be one of them!

Characters earn Repute with Quarters by improving them or the city as a whole. Each Quarter has a different idea of what ‘improvement’ is, however.

The Northern Quarter values Martial Improvement.
If it makes you think "How brave!" or "How [insert military value here]!" that's repute with the Northern Quarter.

The Southern Quarter values Societal Improvement.
If it makes you think "How sweet!" or "How selfless!" that's repute with the Southern Quarter.

The Eastern Quarter values Intellectual Improvement.
If it makes you think "How clever!" or "How resourceful!" that's repute with the Eastern Quarter.

The Western Quarter values Industrial Improvement.
If it makes you think "How determined!" or "How hard-working!" that's repute with the Western Quarter. :)

Characters lose Repute by harming their Quarter. The concept of ‘harm’ is nebulous in Nyka, and what one Quarter might see as virtuous, another will respond to adversely. Indeed, even neighbors will often disagree vehemently on what will please their Quarter. Only thought, experience, and study will tell one what their Quarter truly wants.
Positive and negative Repute is measured OOC as points ranging from 0 to 100, and awarded in threads along with experience and lores. Repute points are treated like experience, and are awarded as such.

For instance, say John Doe rushes into a burning building and rescues a pile of orphans trapped within. For his heroic actions, he would receive five points of Repute for the Northern Quarter. Now let's say that the next day John skips work and gets wasted something fierce to celebrate. For his laziness, he would earn a negative point of Repute with the Western Quarter. Rewards stack, so a character with 84 Repute will have the perks from all three ranks below him.

(26) Accepted:

+ The difference between this Quarter and others is subtle, but unmistakable. The air seems calmer here, and the extremes of weather are blunted ever-so-slightly... Or are perceived to. The Quarter feels warmer and more inviting. A soft hum can be heard from the stones in the Quarter when the conditions are quiet enough. You feel at home here, and the rest of the city can feel cold by comparison.

- You get the distinct sense that your presence is unwanted when stepping into the Quarter you have offended. You lose things more often than other people, and find them in the strangest places. The Quarter will often feel too hot or too cold for your liking, depending on the city's weather. When in the part of town you offended, it feels like you are being watched.

(51) Welcomed:

+ You no longer need to fear the night when in your Quarter. The creatures who inhabit it will protect you. Small, glowing apparitions hang around you like moths around fire, and the quarter feels softer. Cobble feels like wood, and wood feels like packed straw. The elements are a non-issue. If necessary, you can live on the streets quite comfortably.

- You find yourself actively harassed by the Quarter. Parasites and bugs find their way into your clothes. Attempting to do anything in secrecy becomes a futile effort. People run into you at the worst possible times, and evidence is always left behind. Even stepping out of your door at night becomes exceptionally dangerous. The daylight hours are always sweltering or freezing. A dark rumble can be heard from the stones, and injuries fester more quickly in the Quarter. The Quarter is not happy. Not. One. Bit.

(76) Connected:

+ You find yourself possessing exceptionally good luck in the Quarter. Accidents are narrowly averted, bad deals are uncommon, money is found on the ground, and life in general is rarely cruel. The Quarter has an active interest in doing you a good turn, and it does so with aplomb. You shall not come to harm here.

- If anything can go wrong for you while you are in the Quarter, it will. Poisonous snakes crawling in your bed, heavy objects or boiling fluids fall on you, and lightning hitting you during thunderstorms are some of the many misfortunes that have befallen on those that have garnered this much ill Repute. Voices curse you in unknown tongues. If given the opportunity to kill you, the Quarter will do so swiftly, and brutally.

(100) Melded:

+ The Quarter no longer sees you as an individual, but as an extension of itself. It will whisper secrets to you, and sing songs of times to come in your dreams. You feel what happens in the Quarter as if its streets and structures were your own flesh. The laws of reality will, on occasion, bend themselves in minor ways when you are in dire straits.

- Your bad luck has spread to the rest of the city. Though other Quarters' opinions of you may dull the blow slightly, it is obvious that you have committed great sins against the mother city. Only in quarters you are Connected with shall you find respite. Those souls who have angered the Quarter thus and chose to venture into them regardless never returned. See to it that you do not join their ranks.
