Mellea Darksun

Appearance

Race: Drykas
Gender: Female
Age: 17 years
Birthday: 38, Summer, 496
Birthplace: Atop a Strider. No, kidding, she was born in her family's pavilion one afternoon.

Appearance: Mellea is tall at 5' 7", and uses that often uses that to her advantage. She is rarely clumsy, instead graceful and balanced from years on the back of a horse. She has tanned skin, marred in a few places by scars from childhood accidents. Wide green eyes give her a continuous look of surprise and curiousity. Her hair is a light brown with sunbleached streaks. Her hair is often braided in a complex pattern hat her fingers have grown skilled at making over the years. On one braid, 17 beads stack on top of each other, representing her years. On others hang peices of white fabric, each representing a dead family member. Her face is very expressive, she rarely hides her emotions.

Character Concept

Mellea's headstrong attitude has often gotten her in trouble before, and doubtless will again. She is very feirce in battle, proving an imposing figure atop her tall horse with (insert weapon) shining. She rarely ever admits defeat or that she is hurt, which proves frustrating for any medic (or parent) trying to care for her. Despite her stubbornness, she is very social and friendly. She can be naive sometimes, having not been outside of the Sea of Grass in her life. But if someone tries to take advantage of her, she often figures it out pretty quickly, and will turn cold, as she will if anyone hurts her or her friends. She is very friendly, funny, and kind hearted, often helping anyone who passes by in some shape or form. She is willing to laugh at herself, and loves to make others smile or laugh, but this behavior can sometimes be seen as immature. She is very mischevious, but would never pull a prank that hurt a Strider or someone else. She is also very brave and adventurous, hardly ever a day goes by for her without some sort of fun. She never does anything halfway, and rarely thinks before she acts, but is usually clever enough to get out of trouble. She is a sweet girl, and stronger than she realizes.

Character History

17 years ago, Mellea was born into this world as the fourth child of Tark Darksun and Mara Strongbreeze. That night, her mother died in her sleep, of the sickness that had plagued her in the final days of her pregnancy. So Mellea was raised by her father's other wife and her multiple siblings. At a young age she showed a talent in pottery as well as fighting, possibly from her mixed background. Her mother had been from the Ruby clan while her father came from Diamond. Regardless of her family tree, Mellea grew up mostly happy, and play and grew with her friends. During her eighth spring, she found a baby colt standing near it's slain mother, killed by a pack of wolves. She immediatly felt immense sorrow and a connection to the foal, who had too lost its mother. She and the horse bonded, and within a year she had her official tattoos and was a proper Drykas, as her father would say. She gave him a name, Jerelloh, chosen from another language she heard coming from the traders who visited Endrykas, deciding it sounded magical and perfect for the gray and black colt. Her older brother had bonded with his Strider long before she did, but lost a leg in battle, and thus found it hard to ride. So he encouraged her to use his steed, Xalli, to practice for the day when she found a horse of her own. So it was not long before she and Jerelloh were galloping through the sea of grass, laughing and grinning as only a Strider and his girl can.

Note on Yvas:
Secret :
The Drykas use what is called a Yvas on their horses rather than bridles and saddles. A yvas is what equates to a girth with an attached breast collar combination hung with hooks and topped with a small flat hand grip that lays along a horse's shoulders. The Yvas is often placed over a colorful pad that acts to protect the horse from the rider. The grip fits over a strider's withers which holds the yvas in place. It almost looks like the type of thing vaulters used on their draft horses, though it is more functional than a vaulter's pad. The horses can free themselves from them if they got separated from their riders, and do not have tack to entrap or tangle them when they are running loose. The yvas has ring tethers on it for handling a set of wither bags and a waterskin, and is often decorated in knot-work beading that identified the horse and rider as part of a specific pavilion.

Drykas ride without any headgear or bridles on their horses at all. They do not use any halters either.
