Dranquay

Desperate Searches in Melancholy

Physical Information

Race: Akvatari
Birthday & Age : Season of Winter, Day 52, 475 AV. 34 Years Old.
Gender: Male

Physical Description

5’9 and well built, Dranquay possesses the same auburn hair as his sister but with eyes of sea-green rather than blue. His face is angular and somewhat sorrowful, always appearing distant and deep in thought, somewhat aloof – some tend to think him arrogant for it.

Human to the waist, his wings are dark blue approaching grey, with black tips. These as with all Akvatari extend the length of his broad back – well muscled precisely because he does so much flying – and exude from human shoulders. His typical Akvatari tail begins where his human form ends and is of a solid dark brown colour, ending in grey tail flippers. Dranquay in difference to many Akvatari wears something approaching a thin, loose toga over his shoulder and torso of loose, light brown muslin material, tied by a broach at his left shoulder and is conspicuously never without his satchel.

Character Concept

Lost and searching. Those three words describe Dranquay very aptly. Prone to characteristic Akvatari melancholy he combats it with an almost fiercely un-Akvatari drive to learn more about where his race has come from and an underlying resentment towards the Gods for none of them wanting anything to do with his race, even to have the politeness to point out who did bring them into existence even if that divine entity was killed since. This apathy extends to Nysel whom his mother encouraged respect for, since he believes in action rather than dreaming.

Feeling somewhat abandoned and restless Dranquay also has a strong resentment for what he sees as the creative frivolity of the majority of his race, except for his sister for whom he feels nothing but love and affection. Were it not for her own keen drive for knowledge, albeit it less directed than his, this might not be true. Chaelnomyl’s reserved curiosity is to him a characteristic difference that separates his family from the Akvatari’s insular, selfish norms, in spite of her love for Nysel. It is something which he regards as sadly misguided, but would never – ever – tell Chaelnomyl.

The culture and practices of other races fascinate him whilst their drive to war and violence above everything else horrifies him. The idea of the Velterrian holds within it equal measures of awe, revulsion and tenuous, fleeting excitement for Dranquay. He seeks above all to find out what happened afterwards to cause his people to be and why they were abandoned, whilst at the same time never ceasing to wonder how beings gifted with existence can be so selfish and violent to one another.

Consequently unlike his sister he has far more respect for the rules of other cultures, but is still selective about such respect with regard to his dislike for tyranny and hostility to other living beings, seeing laws that promote such activity as flawed. This selectivity and thoughtfulness about everything related to living and existence lends to him a level of philosophy that may be regarded as extreme even by the standards of his race… simply because he extends it outward to everything rather than what he views as the insular self-pity of his people.

Put simply: Dranquay believes the answer to the identity of the Akvatari lies out in the world and among the other races – some of which existed before the Velterrian – not sitting on Akvatar bemoaning and creating artworks in search of self discovery.

Yet it is probably telling that his chosen personal magic is Voiding. With so much of an outpouring of his own energy into the world about him and its bizarre contradictions he spends much time in private staring into the Void and reflecting on what he has learnt, thinking at times that it is the only good, pure thing in existence in a world so full of passions and selfishness.

Character History

Whilst always getting along with his younger sister, Chaelnomyl, Dranquay’s mother always displayed an inward melancholy that as Chael found inspiring, grated on the older Akvatari as he grew up in Abur. Despite learning common through his mother and being somewhat grateful for it and her support he could never quite accept her lack of interest in the world beyond Akvatar.

This is a theme that runs throughout Dranquay’s life. As his sister learnt more and more about dreams and immersed herself in the arts, Dranquay sought knowledge. He sought out all he could regarding the Codex of Xalz – believing that even if it were lies then there must have been a reason for it – and of Akvatari history (what little there was).

A visiting scholar-mage named Davan, with an interest in the melancholy and psychology of the Akvatari, came to Abur when Dranquay was only 12. This chance visitation was to shape the course of Dranquay’s future as he was introduced to the Djed and a smattering of knowledge on the outside world; the centres of learning and the depth of civilization outside of Akvatar.

Where before this visit and the several months of conversation Dranquay had a vague knowledge of the outside world and a sense of the isolation of his people, his conversations with Davan transformed this to something approaching a sense of mental disturbance regarding the path of his people. Travelling to Zeltiva with Davan, Dranquay learnt the beginnings of magic; Glyphing, Projection and Voiding, which to him was partially a philosophical curiosity as well as a practical tool.

Doing research and small jobs to remove things that people wished removed – such as tree roots and rocks – to fund himself and his travels once he had departed Zeltiva after Davan gained a teaching position at the University Dranquay has travelled around the eastern continent in a somewhat vain search for more knowledge for a year before returning to Abur and spending time in research there with his new found knowledge and self confidence before heading back off to the eastern continent in search of rumours on more discovered texts about the Codex of Xalz. He has now acquired an ancient BV book that he believes is the work of a scholar-mage...but his own knowledge of the Ancient Tongue and the archaic nature of some of the wording within the Diary is causing him difficulty so he is returning to some of the centres of learning he has visited previously for aid in deciphering it.

Overall his attitude has never gone down well with his people however, who regard him as something of an eccentric and far too concerned with the outside world… although as such things are, the outside world instead regards him as a highly eccentric Akvatari.
