Training the birds

Postby Fox Starseer on May 25th, 2013, 11:09 am

Fox had finished setting up the training tent, as his mother had directed. A single tent, six meters high and three meters long. Three logs at increasing hights, one at one meter, one at two and a half meters, and one at five meters. He placed meat on the one meter high log, and went to fetch the bird, a young kestrel that had just become mature enough to begin training.

The bird was secured to his glove with the jesses and had a hood to cover it's eyes. He removed the hood and untied the jesses, letting the kestrel take fight. It flew around for a bit, he watched it.

He then gave a small whistle, one that was used to call the attention of any of the birds in his and his mother's care. The kestrel looked at Fox, and flew back to him, but didn't land on his glove. He gave another whistle, and pointed to the meat. The bird flew towards it, but kept circling it. A few minutes later the bird swooped down and took the meat to the ground and ate it.

Fox whistled and the kestrel returned to his glove. He brought it level with the mews and put the bird back into the cage before he put some meat on the second highest log. He then fetched the bird again and let it loose. This time two more whistles, and the bird grabbed the meat and carried it to the ground to eat again. He used two already filled buckets to fill a small trough with water for the bird to drink from, which it flew right up to and started to have a small drink. When it was finished, Fox whisteled another command and it returned to his glove again.

Fox took a third peice of meat and, after putting the bird back in it's cage, placed it on the top of the tallest log. He carefully climbed down the ladder and walked back to the cage, bringing the bird back out onto his glove. He gave the same whistles again, and the bird flew around the meat, grabbing it and landing on the ground to eat it, then went and got another drink of water. Fox put the bird in it's cage once more and placed meat on all of the logs and stood back, giving the bird the order to fly around. He sat there watching it for about an hour, while he leant on a table writing up the training report his mother wanted him to do.

Training the birds

After a few minutes, Fox called the bird back to his arm and placed it back into it's cage. He closed and locked the cage and carried it and his report back to his mother. "I have finished the training and my report" he said, putting the cage back where it belonged, and the report on the table at the back of the tent. "That's good, not to much trouble I hope?" Alvera asked. "Not at all, mother. It all went quite well, and the bird even enjoyed a little bit of free flying around the training tent while I wrote up the report" Fox replied. "Very good, I think that does it for today, after you take down the tent and training course of course" Alvera added, smiling at her son. Fox nodded, and went to pull down the tent and logs and pack them away.

In a few days, it would be a change of seasons, and Endrykus would move once again. He had to prepare the falconry shop for that. Packing up the training tent, making sure the cages where secure for transport, and of course deal with his own tent and help with his family Pavilion. Such was the cycle of life for everyone who lived in Endrykus. The only thing Fox would trade this for, was knowing his twin was safe. Or maybe another reason, he wasn't sure on what else was there, but he knew he wanted to at least visit places like Zeltiva, and maybe a couple of other places. But those are thoughts, and stories, for another time. The here and now is all that mattered at this moment, and right now was preparing for Endrykus moving once again.

Additional Notes :
As dry as this was, I actually quite enjoyed it. You clearly did a little research into what it takes to train falcons and I was impressed that Fox seemed to acknowledge his novice status and didn't try to skip any steps.

That said, you really need to embellish and expand on your narrative a little. This could have been a great chance to describe and evoke the majesty and beauty of raptors at flight; ditto the chance to show the relationship a little more with Fix's mother, and how he felt about his training.

Something for you to work on, I think. Also, and this is more an aesthetic thing, after so long on the site, you should probably invest in an avatar and some kind of background for your text. Much more appealing...

Aside from that, though? Good job, Bird Man. ;)
