Character Concept

Jared is not mentally ill. Jared is not dyslexic. Jared is, by most intents and purposes, a clever moderately handsome young man. However Jared is dyspraxic. This means he has reduced hand-eye co-ordination, low muscle tone in his hands and not very good spatial awareness. I was born with this condition in real life and, for some reason or another, have suddenly decided I want to see how a character like this would pan out.

Character History

Jared had always been a bit different. Even as a baby he was something of an oddity. He looked so deeply thoughtful. So thoughtful that he was forever bumping into things and dropping things. Jared also didn't speak until he was four years old but when he did he skipped past the made-up words and cutesy grammar error phase completely. Sure he used the language of a child but in proper sentences.

As he ascended from infancy into kidliness more changes began to become apparent. The most striking issue was when it came time for Jared to learn how to read and write. Jared's handwriting was messy (even for a child) and he seemed to have great difficulty in drawing too. He did read fine though. In fact he read rather well and always had something intelligent to say about what he read or what he saw around him.

These facts didn't seem to change as he grew. Jared was alienated by his peer group. A peer group of young, Zeltiva rich kids who were as cruel as there fathers were clever (their fathers being Professors at the University). They bullied him often and due to his clumsiness it wasn't exactly difficult.

One day, when he was twelve, as he fled, well tripped, into an alley he came across an odd ally. A weapon he recognised from his studies. It was a slingshot and Jared's only real hope. Now Jared was definitely not a warrior. He had so very little muscle tone in his upper body. He had such a lack in his hands that writing for extended periods of time would cause cramping. At this point in his life he would not have managed to use a full slingshot to much effect but, by some stroke of fate, this was a Hebrean Slingshot. A Slingshot used in the desert and fashioned to be small enough for a younger child than he to use. That wasn't to say the first stone didn't miss but the next one hit and the next one causing the bullies to run off crying from the sharp welts on their heads and bodies.

Ever since then Jared has had little trouble with bullying. In fact after that incident he began to practice with the Slingshot growing better and better with it and, in doing so, stifling some of the blunt of his weakness. He learned how to judge the distance before him making him less clumsy. He built up muscle tone in his hand and arms by practising with the slingshot. His handwriting even got a little better.

His troubles were not entirely over and his list of failed classes was starting to resemble the list of classes you could take. Such classes he did not fail traditionally but rather got kicked out of when the professor could no longer stand his handwriting. When his family received word of an exclamation to some Lost City in the jungle frankly they couldn't wait to get rid of the boy. They sent a letter to the man in charge of the operation, gave Jared some Mizas and parperd him on a boat to Riverfall acceptance into the expedition or not...
