Personality
Confident and friendly, Bec is a woman more inclined to strike up conversation with a complete stranger than spend time by herself. She likes people, their diversity intrigues and interests her and so she tries to spend as much time with them as possible. She enjoys tricking people, or at least trying to, and likes the rush of danger - the fear of being caught in a lie, not the terror of facing death. To Bec, life is a game and she is a very competitive woman.
To say that she doesn't believe in long term relationships would be an understatement. Bec's idea of 'trust' is keeping the lies to a minimum (So perhaps keeping one or two things accurate) and staying around for a week at most before finding another to target befriend. Bec is suspicious by nature and has come to the belief that, as she herself shouldn't be trusted, nobody else should be either. Despite regarding herself as a realist, she tends to jump straight to the worst conclusions about both whatever situation she finds herself in, as well as other people and their motivations.
Morally, Bec doesn't kill, she abhors violence in any form but anything else is fair game. Lying, stealing and cheating are her norm and while she doesn't particularly like alcohol - she dislikes being intoxicated - Bec has no qualms with getting another very drunk before convincing them to hand over their money or jewels.
Although Bec would like to think of herself as a practical, sensible woman, the sort who laughs mockingly at the idea of dresses and other forms of finery, she has a soft spot for feminine things, for dresses and perfumes and elaborate hairstyles and those little fancy chocolates that come in boxes tied with ribbon. It's partly due to the fact that she knows she'll almost certainly never have the chance to try any of that, but also simply because she loves the idea. This tends to make Bec easily jealous and angry at people with more than her, and while she tries to rationalise it, the truth is she's more envious than anything else.

History
Bec was born the bastard daughter of a whore and a man she never knew. Her mother's stories about him varied with the wind. On a good day he would be a handsome prince, wealthy and kind, and on a bad day when she was tired of Bec's ceaseless questions he was a commoner, an older fellow with bad manners and worse breath. Later, Bec would come to the realisation that Ola had no idea who the father was and that he was probably nobody she would ever meet - nor want to.
Bec grew up not exactly on the streets, but it came close. They didn't have a permanent residence and so every time Ola didn't earn enough in a night, they would curl up together on the hard ground with nothing but a blanket and each other for warmth. When she was able, Bec's mother paid for a smaller, one-person room and stayed out alone, letting her daughter have a good nights sleep at her own expense. As she hit her teens, their arguments over this grew louder and more frequent - Bec's points ranging from her mother earning the money, and therefore needing to be the one to sleep besrto being unable to sleep herself knowing her mother was outside - but the arrangement never changed.
As a child, Bec spent her days out on the streets trying to accumulate money. She, like the other children she grew up with, did this with a variety of thefts, begging and otherwise making a nuisance of themselves to the richer population. Bec found herself to be a poor thief, but a far better liar and gained the majority of her money by simply convincing people to give it to her using some means or other.
When Bec was fifteen, her mother serviced a Vantha sailor who was staying in the area for a few months before returning home, the two came to an arrangement and he tutored Bec, teaching her his language. The specifics of the deal were kept secret from Bec and she preferred it that way.
The reason for the lessons was simple. Bec would be an adult soon and Ola wanted her to leave and live a good, happy life elsewhere. Bec found out her mother's plans and, while initially furious, eventually agreed after promising that when she became ridiculously rich, she would return to take her mother away with her. Ola, fully aware that this was unlikely yo happen and that her daughter would almost certainly never return after leaving, agreed anyway.
Six years came and went and, due partly to food shortages and partly to her mother's age decreasing their income, Bec has yet to even begin planning to leave the city. |
