Enoleus Frostfawn

Image

Race: Human, Vantha
Gender: Male
Age: 18
Birthday: 2nd of Summer, 497 AV
Birthplace: Avanthal, Taldera Region

Appearance: Enoleus was born large for a Vantha, six feet tall with broad, looming shoulders. Having spent much of his time in the Talderan wilderness in the last few years, his body has been hardened to roughly a hundred and eighty pounds, and his size is often intimidating to the usually smaller and more lithe of his Vantha kinsmen. That being said, his musculature is rather lean, although very well defined, and as such when fully clothed one would be hard pressed to to call Enoleus anything but lithe - especially from a distance. His back, quite strong from many years of hauling his heavy pack around, is covered with jagged, linear scars - similar to a somewhat neater, but still prominent scar which runs across his left palm.

Enoleus' hair is an almost glossy shade of black. Starting from the crown of his skull, lines of stark blue run in delicate, intricate patterns, almost invisible from a distance, all the way down to the tips of his bangs, which are ragged and uneven from many years of chopping his own hair off with his trail knife. His hair frames his face, which carries an innate, almost disturbing stillness too it - like undisturbed snow. His features are angular and defined, giving him a naturally serious look which compliments the outward appearance of stoicism he projects.

Although his facial expressions often project no emotions at all, these belie the rage and passion that brims in his heart. These feeling are captured in his eyes, a tempest of often swirling and shifting colors that offer a gateway into parts of his psyche that Enoleus hides often from even himself.

Silver: Calm, or otherwise at peace. ( Common.)
Sea Blue: Sad, or feeling regret.
Blood Red: Rage; lusting for revenge.
Lavender: Awe, Wonderment, Intense Euphoria. (Rare.)
Sage Green: Jealousy, Envy.
Bright Orange: Fear, or Paranoia.
Violet: Happiness, Excitement.
Gold: Love, intense passion. (Rare.)
Mixed Colors: Uncertainty; Intense Thought; Mixed Emotions.

Character Concept

Enoleus, while legally a man in Avanthal, is a child in his heart, fighting to save his future from being claimed by the darkness in his past. Though his oratory skills are often clumsy and underdeveloped, likely as a result of the solitude he spent many of his formative years in, in his heart he is very poetic and philosophical. His heart burns to see new things and experience new places, and his soul yearns to seek out the beauty in all things around him, especially the more negative aspects of the world - perhaps, because truly, he still wishes to find some sort of inner beauty in himself.

Although for many years following the death of his father and sister, Enoleus wouldn't allow himself to feel anything, he has always felt more rage in his heart than sadness. He misses his family, but he places the blame for their death solely on himself, and that emotion has compounded over the years to an intense hatred pointed inward. Believing that anyone who knew him would find him to be wanting, he has strayed from prolonged social interaction, and his reclusive lifestyle often times drives him to a point of near madness. Although he does truly enjoy the wilderness and he has the heart of an explorer, perhaps an ever larger reason for his wanderlust is out of some naive notion that leaving Avanthal, and even more so Taldera behind, will also result in him leaving his past behind.

Enoleus is not a misanthrope, nor is he a pessimist. He does feel however that he has no connections with the people of Avanthal, and severely doubts anyone who got close to him would have a desire to stay there. He does truly believe that there is a path out there he can walk which will redeem himself; and this hope that he can someday change into something more than the lost child he had been for so long is what drives him. When he travels, Enoleus does not only hope to find beautiful new places and exciting new peoples, but he also hopes to find who and what it is he wants to be. In this regard, though to many it may appear that Enoleus is a man who focuses an undue amount of attention on his past, Enoleus is primarily concerned with the future.

Character History

The second child of Arcadian and Liara Frostfawn, Enoleus was born on an unusually cold day near the beginning of summer Four-Hundred and Ninety-Seven years after the Valterrian. This would become a day of particular sadness for Arcadian, as due to complications, Liara would not survive the birthing process, and thus Enoleus' birthday would invariably be marred by intense grief from both his father and his sister Talea, whom was his elder by six years. Granted, Arcadian himself was good father, and loved Enoleus unconditionally - but he couldn't hide the sadness he felt on the anniversary of his wife's death every year. Talea, on the other hand, while she did love her little brother, subconsciously placed blame on him for losing her mother at such an early age - and though she would never say it outright, it often came through as she meticulously ridiculed Enoleus for every mistake he made.

Enoleus' was brought up most of his life in a manner typical for a Frostfawn. His father was horse breeder, and Enoleus took an early interest in riding. Talea was naturally far more gifted with actually handling the animals than Enoleus, and was also a very gifted hunter, often making solo trips deep into the wilderness and bagging impressive game - earning her bragging rights at the Savant lodge. In his early youth Enoleus was often envious of his sister, who received constant praise from father for her achievements. He would try very hard to catch up with her in all areas that he could, accompanying her out into the wilderness when she made short trips to learn all that he could and try to develop a deeper bond. However, even when they spent days out in the wild, Talea always kept a firm wall up between herself and her little brother.

Despite all of this, Enoleus had been blooming into a boisterous and confident child. He fueled his imagination on tales of the mighty warriors and heroic knights, and often dreamed of adventure himself. He loved the winter, as many of his kinsmen did, but he yearned to see far the away places that he heard of in stories - places where the sun shined hotly all year round and where vast seas of grass covered the earth. He imagined himself as a gallant knight, crossing swords with evil and sweeping fair maidens off their feet. During the winter his imagination was particularly active; in a time when many Vantha were saddened by Morwen's departure from Avanthal, Enoleus felt truly alive as the cold embraced him, the bracing chill of the northern winds waking every nerve in his body up and bringing him an overwhelming sense of peace and belonging.

Enoleus' relatively normal childhood came to an abrupt end during the summer of 507 AV. The weather was clear and mild, and Enoleus had just turned ten years old. Arcadian felt bad about how miserable he always was during his sons birthday, and he wanted to repair the lasting rift between his two children. So, although he had not been a hunter in many years and his age was starting to catch up with him, he organized for all three of them to take a lengthy expedition into the wilderness in order to bond and to celebrate their lives. Talea, in particular, was soon to be married into Coolwater hold, the hold her mother had came from - and as such it carried special significance. The day before Enoleus turned ten, his family packed up, riding out on horses deep into the Northern Reaches to find thick forests to hunt and camp in.

Two days of riding passed, and they set up camp deep in the forests of Taldera. Talea and Arcadian went about getting camp set up, both having much experience in this part of the forest, and Enoleus, eager for the approval of his father and sister, begged to assist in some small way. Arcadian caved, and sent Enoleus out to gather kindling for the fire. Enoleus was overjoyed, and gathered a large amount of nicely sized dry sticks to get the fire started - but when he returned, the camp had been overrun by a party of armed men.

Enoleus, terrified child that he was, hid in the underbrush nearby as an aged Arcadian tried to fend off the slavers. Talea had already been knocked unconscious, likely from a surprise strike, and was being tied up and dragged back to the rest of the caravan. For his efforts, Arcadian's hand was cut clean off,and on his knees, tears streaming down his face, he begged for his daughters safe release - in the back of his mind praying to Morwen that his son was nowhere near the camp while this was taking place, and would thus be delivered from bondage. The slavers, jeering and mocking him, commented that an old man like him was hardly worthwhile as a slave - especially now that he was missing one of his hands.

During the fight, Arcadian had dropped his weapons - his Tamo daggers. Though he hadn't forged the metal, he had carved intricate patterns into the wood, carving being a hobby of his, and had offered the daggers to Liara when they had married. He carried them around not for self defense, as he had no training in their use, but as a way to remember his wife. One of the daggers was nearby, and Enoleus could easily grab it and attack the slaver who was threatening his father. Yet his body was paralyzed by terror, and no matter how much his mind screamed at his body to move, to try and save his family, the child simply remained hidden, trembling with fear. His eyes were wide and his face streamed with tears, as his fathers head hit the ground, rolling away from his body, eliciting laughter from the slavers.

Likely due to the heavy sobbing coming from his hiding location, one of the slavers on the outskirts of the camp found him. A solid clunk to the head released Enoleus from consciousness, and awoke later in a cage - with his sister in one nearby. They shared few words, as they had little time to before Talea was dragged off somewhere by one of the slavers - never to be seen again. Time passed as days turned to weeks, and weeks turned into months, and Enoleus would inquire time and time again about the whereabouts of his sister - but would be awarded only with several dozen lashes for having the impudence to even speak to one of his captors. Mostly, he did what he was told, and would sit alone in his cage at nights, wishing for death to find him.

The climate became warmer as the caravan moved further and further from his childhood home. As he became more and more subdued and obedient, the slavers began to trust him more and more, and eventually allowed him to sleep independent of his cage. Yet, they were too confident in his complacence, and Enoleus made the decision to try and escape, haven given up hope of ever finding his sister again. However, he had seen the caravan leader with his fathers Tamo Daggers - and the thought of leaving them with his fathers murderer disgusted him. One night, after many of the Slavers had been drinking and partying, Enoleus, assisted by his small size, snuck past some of the drunken and passed out caravan guards, into the leaders tent.

The leader was drinking and playing cards with several of his lieutenants, using one of the Tamo daggers to pick his teeth - the matching one imbedded in a hunk of bread on the table. Although Enoleus common was rough and hardly practiced, hiding in the corner of the tent he managed to pick out what they were saying - and they were talking about Talea. That was, at least, the only way Enoleus felt to interpret it, as they discussed how wasteful killing a young Vantha girl off was considering that they often fetched very high prices. Enoleus' eyes flashed red, and all the emotions he had been stowing inside him since his fathers dead exploded as his body moved on its own. A roar fell from his lips, as he dove, grabbing the Tamo dagger from the table and landing on the slaver - driving the dagger into his throat. The caravan leader, with the daggers counterpart, attacked back, but Enoleus caught the dagger with his off-hand, allowing it to stab all the way through his palm as the caravan leaders blood splattered all over Enoleus' face.

The other slavers in the tent were paralyzed by shock at the small vantha child murdering their leader, and Enoleus watched with partial fear and partial awe as the life drained from the eyes of the man who murdered his father. The shock didn't last long, however, and Enoleus ripped the Tamo dagger from his palm, his adrenaline allowing him to ignore the pain as he fled the sluggishly drunk slavers, the alarm ringing off across the camp as they desperately tried to organize and follow the boy.

Enoleus ran for what seemed like days in his mind, but the wound in his hand caught up with him as the adrenaline wore off. Darkness invaded his mind and reality slipped away from his senses, and the child thought certainly now, that his family was avenged, that death would take him. Yet this was still not to be the case, as a serendipity would have it, the boy would be discovered by a trade caravan headed north to Avanthal. Having gone far out of their way to avoid the slaver caravan, they stumbled upon him unconscious in the wilderness, and assuming him an escaped slave ( a theory confirmed by the vicious lash marks across his young back ) they took him in. Nursing him back to health, he deflected questions about his family and his living situation, as the traders could tell he was Vantha, and simply remained silent and stoic until arriving back in Avanthal several weeks later.

He returned to Frostfawn hold, and though his family home was still present, he was taken in instead by several of his fathers friends. With the news of his fathers death, most of his fathers horses were sold off to pay for Enoleus' living expenses, but Enoleus opted to keep one, a newborn named Sleet, whom became Enoleus' only friend in Avanthal.
Though few people knew of what had happened to his family, the few who did tried their best to console him - but it was to no avail. Their sympathy only alienated Enoleus further, who sought no ones support, and especially, no ones pity. Though he was technically provided for by friends of his family, he took to journeying deep into the wilderness, finding solitude in the vast emptiness of the wastes. These frequent trips honed his skills and his body, and when he turned sixteen he felt confident that he no longer needed to rely on anyone save himself.

Family Heirloom
Enoleus' father originally bought the exotic Tamo Daggers from a traveling caravan that passed through Avanthal. The woman that he was currently seeing, who would later become Enoleus' mother, took an interest in them. Thus, Enoleus' father spent several weeks etching intricate designs into the handles of the daggers, before presenting them as a wedding gift. With both his mother and father dead, Enoleus keeps the daggers as a keepsake, despite having no practical skill in their use.
