Nalik Fallingleaf

Appearance

Race: Drykas
Gender: Male
Birthday: 21 Spring 489AV
Birthplace: Endrykas

Appearance:

Nalik stands 5ft10, shorter than a lot of the Drykas males he grew up with however he see's it as a benefit when stalking prey. His brown eyes are constantly on the move observing and taking visual information all the time. Nalik has a slight build, not the muscle mountain of a warrior but not so feeble he can't look after himself. His light brown hair is long, down to his shoulder blades. He usually wears it down around Endykas itself but ties it back when he hunts. For formal occasion he braids with wooden beads and trinkets neatly so it hangs down his back. His Windmark is a swirling black tribal pattern starting from the top of his right forearm and running down over the top of his right hand.

Character Concept

Nalik is an excitable young man. He is always looking for something to do, and if forced to sit and wait he will fidget constantly out of eagerness to do something. He enjoys Endrykas, and is fiercely loyal to his birthplace and its upkeep, however he is only truly at peace when he is out in the sea of grass, hunting, trapping and getting up to other forms of mischief.

Nalik is an impulsive person rarely taking time to think things through before doing something, he is very much a 'do now think later' kind of person. He is easy to get along with, but can be extremely stubborn when he has made his mind up about something. He is very open about his emotions and it is easy to tell when he is happy, sad or anything in between. He is loyal to the point of stupidity, whether that is to friends, family or culture and will do anything to protect people and ideals he holds dear.

Character History

Nalik is the youngest son of Relea Soothingspring, his mother and a healer of the Opal clan, and his father Vlain Fallingleaf a hunter of the Emerald Clan. He has one brother, Tarin Fallingleaf. His brother is 3 years older, louder, bigger and more boisterous than Nalik preferring brawn to other means. As a result Nalik always felt weak compared to his brother and felt a little resentful towards him as he believed his parents preferred the bigger more impressive Son to himself.

His parents though loved both boys equally and encouraged both to pursue what they felt was their path. The boys at a young age were naturally competitive, it didn't matter what it was, if they were doing it together they turned it into a competition. Unfortunately for Nalik brawn usually won and it was rare for Nalik to win their competitions unless it had to do with stealth or speed, and even after winning his brother liked to prove his strength with a 'fun' wrestle.

As a result of this competitiveness after Nalik was taught to hunt and led out to the sea off grass for the first time, around his 12th birthday, he tried to spend as much time as he could away from his family pavilion seeking the solitude of the sea of grass and the escapism of hunting, growing boulder with his adventuring the older he got.

Unfortunately one fateful day his brother decided to follow Nalik into the sea of grass, wanting to know were his brother went and what he was up to. Nalik must have been close to 17 and Tarin around 20 now a budding warrior. Tarin was not as used to the sea of grass as Nalik was and it wasn't long before Nalik knew he was being followed and who it was. Instead of confronting his brother Nalik carried on, increasing his pace knowing that he could move quicker than his brother and was keen to prove his skill in navigating and moving around the grasslands.

After a while of this game Nalik realized that he was no longer being followed, and waited for his brother to catch up a smug grin on his face. However the bells passed and it soon became obvious that Tarin was not going to find him, so even happier he went to look for his brother, confident in his abilities and full of bravado, looking forward to teasing his brother about having to be rescued.

It was another bell before He found his brothers tracks, going in the direction that Nalik had never been before. Staring to get a little concerned he followed, keeping low and quiet. When he found the end of the tracks his face dropped and terror began to overtake him. He had followed the tracks to a small clearing and was now confronted by a rock face with what appeared to be a small cave darkening to blackness inside the cliff. Outside the cave were remains, most of which were easily identifiable as human, and scraps of clothing and other items obviously torn in struggle. Among them his brothers sword, and still grasping the pommel as tightly as it would in life, his hand.

To this day Nalik is still shamed by what he did next. He is sure that if fate had reversed their places and it had been Tarin standing were he stood and Naliks sword and hand in front of him then Tarin would have forged into the cave and attempted to rescue his brother. But instead Nalik ran. He ran out of fear and guilt and panic. Fear had won and all he wanted to do was get home to his pavilion and hide.

It took him until nearly dark to find his way back to Endrykas and burst into his pavilion sweat and tears running down his face. For the next day he would not talk, not eat or sleep, he would just sit and stare at the entrance to his pavilion, occasionally breaking down into floods of tears. When his brother did not return for dinner his parents feared the worse, but it was only 2 days after that Nalik told them his story. They begged and pleaded with Nalik to lead warriors from the diamond clan to the cave, but he would not. He was to scared and besides he probably would not have remembered were to go, fear blinding him.

It was a year before he ventured back into the sea of grass, and more before he started to venture further than the outskirts of the roaming city. His parents were never the same to him, and as a result he moved out, setting up his own tent amongst the other hunters of the Emerald clan.

To this day Nalik will not talk about the incident, in fact he probably couldn't even if he wanted to. His own brain as a defense mechanism has buried the memories deep within his conciseness, when asked he will not even admit to having a brother. Nalik does not think of the past and constantly keeps himself busy with hunting and anything else that pops into his head as a good idea. as a result of his past he is fiercely loyal to anyone he cares about, perhaps over subconsciously hoping to redeem himself for his past failures.

Rivain

ImageRivian is Naliks Strider. She stands 16 hands tall and is Buckskin Strider. Her mane dark brown. She bonded with Nalik when he was 16 after meeting him and following him through the grasslands. Both Strider and Drykas have built a strong bond and are very comfortable together.

Gruff

Image Gruff is a fairly new addition to Naliks life. He brought him after an injured deer escaped him in the grasslands thinking that a dog would help combat this problem in the future. Since owning him Nalik has tried his best to train and turn the hound into the obedient dog he desires, but Gruff is turning out to be just as stubborn as his master.

Housing

[b]Location:
Endrykas encamped with the Emerald clan hunters

House: 1 large tent (4 person)
1 large tarp
100 ft of rope
1 lantern
2 torches
1 bedroll
1 blanket
1 set of fishing tackle & hooks
1 bonded Strider
1 Yvas
1 large set of Yvas bags

Note on Yvas:
The Drykas use what is called a Yvas on their horses rather than bridles and saddles. A yvas is what equates to a girth with an attached breast collar combination hung with hooks and topped with a small flat hand grip that lays along a horse's shoulders. The Yvas is often placed over a colorful pad that acts to protect the horse from the rider. The grip fits over a strider's withers which holds the yvas in place. It almost looks like the type of thing vaulters used on their draft horses, though it is more functional than a vaulter's pad. The horses can free themselves from them if they got separated from their riders, and do not have tack to entrap or tangle them when they are running loose. The yvas has ring tethers on it for handling a set of wither bags and a waterskin, and is often decorated in knot-work beading that identified the horse and rider as part of a specific pavilion.

Drykas ride without any headgear or bridles on their horses at all. They do not use any halters either.
