Rayth

Postby Rayth on June 12th, 2013, 9:33 pm

Rayth

Appearance

Race: Human, Inarta
Caste: Avora
Gender: Male
Age: 18
Birthday: 1, Spring, 495
Birthplace: Wind Reach

Appearance:
Of average height for an Inartan, Rayth is roughly 5’8” tall, weighing about 140lbs. He is on the thin side, but is stronger than he looks. His lean limbs and body gives him almost a stretched look, but his muscles are toned, showing that he does have the physical strength to survive in the Unforgiving. His face is nothing memorable, being rather average. He is not ugly or bad looking, but he is not ruggedly handsome either. His jaw is pronounced, but not strong, with a nose that is slightly smaller than most. His most memorable feature is his eyes. Set beneath dark auburn hair, his eyes sparkle a bright yellow, almost gold, color, and are filled with curiosity and intensity in equal measures, looking very much like a falcon's eyes, or other bird-of-prey. This gives his face a strong, determined look, which is often spoiled by the easy smile he wears.

Character Concept

Personality
Rayth has a strong sense of right and wrong. This can sometimes lead to him getting in trouble when he sees people acting in a way that he believes is wrong, especially among the Endals. During his childhood, he was a very interested reader, often spending much of his free-time spending time “studying,” as the other Yasi would call it. His reading gave him a romanticized, idealized vision of the Eagle Riders. His dream and goal was to join their ranks. He did not succeed, and considers that to be a failure, the biggest failure of his life. However, he still holds his image of what the Eagle Riders are supposed to be, and speaking out when he sees Endal violating what they should be. He is open and honest, and calmer than most of the Inarta, which isn’t saying much. However, he tends to be self-critical and not think very highly of himself or his skills, although he is confident in his job, that is more of a trust in Kaden Avin’s judgement than a natural trust in his own abilities.

Ethics
Rayth tends to abide by the standards of chivalry, but more out of coincidence than intention. He is naturally honest, hard working, and has strong morals. He believes that, while two people may hold different stations or ranks, they are not morally superior to each other. For example, he doesn’t believe that because the Endal can do something that it is alright. By the same token, he believes that because he can do things, or tell people to do things, that doesn’t make his actions automatically right. This leads to him having a more restrained use of his authority than some.

Likes
Reading, practicing and honing his skills. He also likes falcons, venison, and he loves apples, when he can get them, as they are rather uncommon in Wind Reach.

Dislikes
The romance, especially the promiscuity, of Inartans as a whole. He doesn’t know what his own thoughts are on the topic, but he knows that he doesn’t like what is happening around him. He also dislikes some of the details of the caste system, although he believes in changes to the system, not doing away with it.

Merits
While Rayth is not necessarily soft-hearted, he does have strong empathy. While he may not be moved to tears, he does feel for people.

Flaws
The Inartan temper. While he does have a cooler temper than most, and also has a better grip on that temper, his patience is by no means infinite. He can take many types of criticism or insults well without much reaction, however there are some topics that will bypass his normal control. Conversely, if his temper is sudden and hot, it tends to not last long, he will tend to make a fool of himself, or get into a fight, either verbal or physical, and come out of it without much remaining hostility towards the other party. However, if it is actually a building of temper until it reaches the bursting point. He will tend to be more deliberate with his reactions, not always, but that anger and rage will simmer for a long time to come.

Character History

Pre-Creation :
Growing up, Rayth didn’t know who his parents were. A common enough occurrence in Wind Reach, although there were rumors that his mother had been an Endal and that his father had been a mixed blooded traveler. While Rayth did not care deeply who his father had been, and he was often teased about that rumor, he looked up to who he believed his mother to be. If his mother had been an Endal it would explain why he was not raised by his parents. The man who raised him while he was in the nursery taught him and others about language and reading early. While most of the kids disliked reading, much preferring to play with each other or get into mischief, Rayth enjoyed them quite a bit. He would often spend hours or days reading stories of heroes and deeds, from which his own ethics grew. By the time he moved to the youth section to become a Yasi, his taste in reading had not stopped growing.
During his Yasi training time, he started to read more books about what he was learning. For example, he would prepare for an assignment with a glass-blower by reading up on the art and history of glass-blowing, often impressing his teacher with his knowledge, if not always his skill. During this time he dreamed of becoming an Endal. Most of the kids did. It was a common desire. However, unlike most, Rayth’s dreams stemmed from the heroic stories and adventures he read earlier in life. He wanted to be an Endal, not for the power or the prestige, but to help others. And so he began to focus his efforts into skills that he believed would help an Eagle Rider, primarily hunting. However, he also gained an interest in the art of crafting bows, and began to study that as well, reasoning that knowing how to make a bow would be both a useful skill to know, and beneficial to developing archery skills.
However, during this time he also made a rival. Sorod was another Yasi who wanted to be an Endal. Unlike Rayth, Sorod was a boaster, and would tell anyone about himself, his skills, and his merits with little invitation. He was not a bad kid, but he enjoyed praise, and he received decidedly little from Rayth. As Sorod’s frustration grew, he began to tease, make fun of, and eventually verbally assault Rayth. Rayth did his best to not give the other boy any reason to hate him, but his temper occasionally got the better of him. As for himself, he did not have many friends, between his bookish and focused habits, and Sorod’s bullying. He considered his only true friend during this time to be his hawk Kiech, whom he had raised from a chick.
Eventually Rayth’s fifteenth birthday arrived and he had not bonded with a Wind Eagle. Worse, the eagle he had been trying to get close to had bonded with Sorod. This crushed Rayth, whose only goal had been to become a Rider. And so he went to the Valintar without knowing what would happen to him, and halfway not caring. However, when the Valintar decided that Rayth would make both a good enough hunter and bowyer to become an Avora, he regained some of his drive and enthusiasm.
Eventually, he was recruited by Sorod to go hunting with him. Food was getting scarce, and prey even more so. Sorod chose Rayth because he knew he was a good hunter, but he would be able to boss him around. Rayth, for his part, was angry with Sorod. First of all, Kiech, his hawk, had left the city, along with all the other birds save the Wind Eagles. And now this overbearing Endal bully was making him do something he didn’t want to just out of spite. And it was on his birthday! They split up to hunt, and when Rayth came back to the meeting place, Sorod was no where to be found. Rayth was furious that Sorod would abandon him for no reason, and when he felt his anger would just burst out of him, Mt. Skyinarta exploded.
It was 1 Spring 512, and the Djed storm had begun. Rayth was lucky to find himself in the lee of a small mountain, one of the ones that did not explode with volcanic activity, and was high enough up the mountain that He was safe from the wild Djed pooling in the valleys and canyons. Rayth sheltered there until the storm had finished, and then started on his way back to Wind Reach. On his way back, he found Sorod where he had gone done when his eagle had been injured. Rayth saved him from a Djed mutated Sky Wolf, risking his own life in the process. After that, with Sorod surprised that Rayth would save him in such a situation, they had a discussion about what they felt about each other, came to terms, and started becoming friends.
