Kawa Snowsong

Appearance

Race: Vantha
Gender: Male
Age: 22
Birthday: 11, Winter, 490.
Birthplace: Avanthal

Appearance: Kawa is 5'5", with shoulder length black hair which ends in light yellow highlights. His skin is a darker brown color, with signs of wind burn almost always visible on his ears. His face is smooth and clean shaven, the only outstanding feature being a small scar on the right side of his chin, obtained from a little accident with a stone razor. There are considerably more scars on his hands however, as he never seems to wear gloves. The rest of the Vantha is usually hidden under both his clothes and a fur coat and boots, though the coat lacks a hood. His eyes, like all Vantha's, change color with his mood.

Character Concept

Kawa, like the rest of his people, has always had a deep love for stories, and actively seeks out opportunities to hear the tales of others. If he hears a story that catches his interest (which is most of them), the man will listen in rapt attention, memorizing every detail, and going over it again and again until he can quote it word for word... Even if some of those words are the wrong ones. So, when meeting new people, Kawa is even more excited than most Vantha.

However, Kawa's true love is not storytelling, but music. Raised in the Snowsong hold, he has always had knack for playing instruments, and his favorite in particular, the flute.

So, combining these two talents, Kawa tells stories not by words, but by the sounds of his flute. He does this by taking his favorite tale at that moment, and, as he recites the words in his head, starts to play. Because of the almost mournful sound a flute makes, many of the stories he uses are either sad, or changed to make them so. Yet, he always does his best to end the performance on a happy note; for as the Valterrian taught everyone, no matter the circumstances, things shall always get better.

And that is the motto by which Kawa lives. Carefree and always bearing a smile, the Vanta lives his life seeking the tales of others, even if it means not taking responsibility of himself. All his life, Kawa has had one consistent regret, one of not having his own great legends for his flute to play. Despite the previously mentioned constant smile, Kawa has a tendency to overreact to problems, if only inwardly. He is always nervous in unfamiliar or tense situations, though does his best to hide it.

Character History

Raised in the Snowsong hold, Kawa was introduced to music at a young age, when his mother gave him a small, wooden flute for his fifth birthday. Originally from the Skyglow Hold, Kawa's mother had carved the instrument herself. A year later, she began to teach the boy the basics of wood carving, and though he showed skill in the craft, Kawa had a bad habit of letting his mind wander, earning him either a botched creation, a fresh scar, or both. His other skill, that of playing the flute, was taught to him by his father, a hunter who's own roots were said to actually go back to the Frostfawn Hold. Though his skill in hunting was not passed on to Kawa, the older man would often take the boy with him, and after a day of hunting, would teach him to play the small wooden flute.

Kawa, as said before, was never a good hunter. One of the major causes of this was, and still is, his own tendency to stop paying attention. The boy's mind would often be too busy going over the stories he had heard the night before for him to act quickly, leading to him making mistakes. Eventually, it was decided he would never make a good hunter, but his father wasn't going to give up just yet.

Because of Kawa's ability to spend hours in thought, his father asked a close friend to teach the boy to ice fish. And though Kawa wasn't excellent at it, he soon became competent enough to help provide food for his family.

Yet, Kawa still spent more time practicing his flute than anything else, as well as some wood carving during the night as he listened to others tell stories. But as the boy grew older, he began to worry about his father's approval of this practice, as the man had long since stopped teaching him to play.

Then, on his sixteenth birthday, Kawa's fears were layed to rest when his father presented him with a flute carved from a whale's bone. It was one-foot long, much bigger than the wooden flutes Kawa had been starting to carve, and it's tunes were far more diversified than anything Kawa had been able to play before.

Ever since that gift, Kawa has been focused on telling stories with his music. And, due to its value, he only uses the bone flute for the very best tales.

Housing

Location: Avanthal

House: 1 basic 20x20 Arvinta in Snowsong Hold with a hearth, bunk, chest, chair, and small table.

Each Arvinta consists of a communal meeting or sitting room. Then there are private rooms for couples, and a common sleeping/living room for all the children. Visitors are often given a private room, while a couple will move in with the children to make extra room. Some of the larger, more expansive Holds with wealthier families have spare rooms in their Arvinta or special guest quarters when people move from place to place visiting. Holds often have common areas and craft cottages in buildings attached and are always made of solid stone. External buildings are often built from ice and warmed from within by special braziers that conduct heat into the room but do not melt the thick ice walls. A Hold may contain multiple Arvintas and might hold upwards of a couple hundred people.
