Character Concept
Perception of Self: Rae is a perfectionist, and if she does not perform the way that she expects herself to, she is very hard on herself. She sees herself as always needing more instruction, a bit clumsy, not particularly attractive physically, somewhat socially awkward, and controlled by emotions as opposed to rationale. On the flip side, she is very aware of her strengths; humility, integrity, bravery driven by flares of uncontrolled anger or insatiable curiosity (which gets her into trouble more often than not), independence, tenacity, eagerness to learn, ambition, and above all, compassion.
Projection of Self: Due to her perfectionism, Rae comes off as a bit intense when in her element. If one would strike up a conversation about medicine, they might think that she is overbearing, blunt, and prideful as a result of her intense passion for the subject. She can tend to get so caught up in her own ambitions that she seems to put herself above others, but never has the intention of doing so. However, she is also incredibly kind, empathetic, and genuine in her approach to others. She is always sincerely interested in people and their stories, and will welcome the chance for a new experience.
Interests: People in general, their stories and woes and issues (she loves fixing people); experiences new places and things; learning new information; climbing; hiking; anything science related; art, though she's no good at any of it
Aversions: Being doubted due to her young age; having to repeat herself; sailing, or any involvement with being out on the ocean; violence; war; unnecessary confrontation or arguments; dishonesty; relaxing
Goals: To perfect her skills in medicine, herbalism, botany, and anything involved in healing others; to become a member of the Opal Order and devote her life to Rak'keli; to explore the far corners of Mizahar; to discover the cause of her father's death.
Character History
Childhood: Growing up in Wind Reach was always an adventure for young Rae and her twin brother Roku. The two children would always be searching for a new experience; Papa would buy them books from foreign places and teach them about cultures, or introduce them to the few travelers that miraculously made their way to the mountainous city. He was a cartographer for Wind Reach, and poured over maps of all kinds of places. Rae's eyes were opened to the wide world around her, and when she and her brother entered their kindergarden training, they were ready to dive in. The two students gobbled up any information thrown at them, though each in their respective fields. Roku advanced through his childhood in the ways of Wind Reach; hunting, wilderness navigation, falconry, and archery. Rae found a keen liking of botany and herbalism. Both found their way into apprenticeships in their fields by the age of eleven. The twins were diligent in their Bendi duties, but their excitement for learning drove them to classes and training in all of their spare time.
Adolescence: Both Rae and her twin brother quickly advanced in their chosen fields. At the age of 13, they had decided firmly what they would commit their lives to; Roku would train to be an Endal, and Rae would pursue further study of medicine. She continued in her apprenticeship until the age of 15, when she was offered a new position apprenticing in the medical facilities. There, she learned much more about the medical practices of the Inarta people, as well as, on her own time, studied out the practices of other cultures around the world. Though information and resources were limited, she pieced together information about the Konti and their island of healers. Intrigued, she researched the female race, stumbling upon information about their religion. It explained everything; the mark on her shoulder, the unexpected miraculous healing abilities (though most of them quite small). Rae could not get enough information on this Rak'keli, their goddess of healing, but she painted a foggy picture of her character as well as her call to anyone who would follow her. This encounter flung Rae into an entirely new realm of possibilities, and she devoted whatever time she could on exploring just how much she could do with this power that she'd had since birth.
Adulthood: It was not until she reached the age of 19 that she desperately needed it. With Roku's graduation into the Endal ranks, he became distant. Understandably, his new duties kept him busy. Rae never really minded, but it gave her a new duty in caring for their father. After a venture out into the Unforgiving in order to map out a region of caverns, her father became very ill. It was unexpected and unexplained, but Rae was determined to heal him. She tried everything she knew, neglecting her duties and studies in order to focus her attention on him. She stayed up nights in the scholarly center in hopes of stumbling upon some hidden cure for this mysterious disease. Seasons passed, and slowly, her father became worse. When he died, she was broken. She blamed herself for not knowing enough and not being able to harness her healing power. For a short while, she lulled, refusing to engage in her job at the medical center or socialize. It was only divine circumstance that brought her out of her despair; the only record of a case similar to her father's was written in an ancient copy of medical documents from the island of Mura, which came up in a medical history book she had gotten ahold of ages before. A combination of curiosity and desperation drove her to the insane idea to seek it out. It took a fair amount of convincing from her brother, but eventually she began planning the impossible journey. It was a year in the making, and at 21, the twins descended the mountains with Roku's Endal companions and flew to the Issurian city of Sultros. Rae's father had traveled much more than most Inarta; he was required to for his profession. Always with trade caravans or the occasional Endal outing, he would explore the region around Wind Reach, as well as the neighboring cities, and he would always somehow make a connection. Here lived an old comrade of his from times difficult for the twins to imagine. However, they tracked the man, Samos, down and pursuaded him to escort Rae to the coast of the Suvan Sea, where she could take a ship across to Sylira, and from there travel with traders to the far East. The Issurian reluctantly did so, in the name of their father, and the twins parted ways. The journey to the sea was long and arduous, and Rae's companion cold and unsocial. However, by the time they reached the sea, they had formed a close bond, and he offered to go with her further, sacrificing his city and ties to his people to follow her. They were married in the city of Syliras the following summer. They would not arrive at the east coast of Sylira until the following spring, taking the slow winding routes of trading caravans.
From there, they parted ways temporarily while Rae went ahead by herself to the island of Mura. Once she secured a place to live, her husband joined her, and she immediately became a student at the Opal Temple.
It has been a year since she began her studies, and she still has much to learn. She holds a part time position in the clinic, addressing patients with minor illnesses and injuries. She also works in the library in order to study there. Sam has set up shop as a blacksmith, moving between Mura and the nearby port towns in order to sell his goods.
