Yan

Appearance

Race: Human, Mixed
Gender: Male
Age: 16
Birthday: 6 Spring 497

Appearance: Yan has shockingly red hair, a trait he gained from his Inartan father. His bangs have the tendency to hang down into his bright blue eyes and poke them. Because of this, he will often keep his hair slicked back to keep any hair free of his face. His hair has a slight wave to it. A small spattering of light freckles can be seen across the bridge of his nose along with his shoulders and arms. He has a slight tan which would be darker if his skin would actually agree to tanning. He has a slight build and short stature, something which annoys him and he always says that he’ll be bigger when he’s fully grown.

Character Concept

Yan can only be described as an odd person. There are several tendencies that he has that can at times strike others as strange. He has an uncontrollable compulsion with numbers, and though he’ll tell you that it’s no big deal, it’s become something that is weaved into everything he does. He doesn’t mean to count the number of times he steps while walking or how many noises a door makes when he opens it, without touching the doorknob with his bare hand of course, but it’s just something that he does without thinking. But it doesn’t stop there. Certain numbers are avoided, they cannot be stopped on. If he reaches his destination in twelve steps, well, he’ll need to stomp the ground two more times before he can go inside. If a door makes four noises when he opens and closes it, he’ll open and close it once more. Sometimes he even finds himself counting the number of times other people do things, but them landing on the wrong numbers isn’t something that bothers him quite as much.

He also doesn't like being touched by people he doesn't trust. It's something that just makes him uncomfortable. The less he likes the person, the more uncomfortable he feels being touched by them. The only way to make himself feel better after this happens is to wash the area that was touched with water. This is something that gets annoying to him, as he can find himself washing his arms and hands many times during the day from bumping into or brushing against people. As such, he tends to wear shirts with long sleeves and gloves to cover his hands.

All of this stems from an incredibly anxious personality. He is incredibly outspoken and will say and do what he wants based on how he feels. But this doesn’t stop him from later agonizing over how stupid he was. Trusting isn’t something that comes easily for him, and he always has this little voice in his head telling him that no one really likes him. He can be incredibly optimistic, even to the point of naivety. This doesn’t mean he lacks intelligence, he is an incredibly good problem solver. He can be given a negative situation, and create several silver linings and a plan to deal with it. Sarcasm is a part of everything that he does. It’s in his words, his actions, everything. He is confident in himself, but not in how others see him.

Numbers: :
Here is a list of the numbers Yan avoids.

  • 4
  • 6
  • 12
  • 13

For other numbers, it depends on what the numbers making it up add to. Such as twenty-four. 24 --> 2+4=6

His favorite numbers are seven, nine, and especially eleven.

Character History

Yan’s childhood had been a bumpy one, though not always bad. He’d never known his father, and his mother, while she had been living, never spoke of the man. Not that Yan minded, he’d never much cared. He’d never met his father, so why care about him? At least that’s what he told himself.

He spent the first years of his life living with his mother in Zeltiva. They didn’t have his father to hep them with their expenses, but his mother’s sister lived in the city as well with her husband. They had the means to help Yan’s mother with any money issues, and always reached out with a helping hand in troubling times. Yan’s Aunt and Uncle were kind people along with being rather well off. They had Yan’s grandmother living with them to care for her in her old age. His Aunt and Uncle had never been able to have children themselves, so they loved their nephew and spent a good amount of time with him.

Yan had many different focuses as a child. He’d find an interest, work with it, eventually grow bored of it, and move on. Nothing seemed to stick.

His mother died when he was seven due to an illness. Yan was sad for the following months after her passing, but eventually managed to bounce back though he still missed her in every day life. His Aunt and Uncle were more than happy to take him in and they treated him as their own child.

Eventually, when Yan was ten a street performer with an act of illusions came to the city. Yan was fascinated with the way he was able to create such amazing spectacles. He waited until the show was over and the crowd has waned before nervously approaching the performer, who raised a brow at his presence. After finally working up the courage, Yan blurted out “H-how did you do that? I’ve never seen magic like that before!”

There must have been something in the twinkle in his eyes, because the man grinned, crouched down, and whispered to Yan, “It’s all in the tricks.” And he made a card disappear from his hand. “Sleight of hand, there’s no magic. At least, not the kind everyone else knows.” Then he stood, ruffled Yan’s hair, and disappeared into the people on the street.

Yan was struck with an inspiration like he’d never had before. He would learn these tricks. He spent the next five years of his life learning sleight of hand, working out different illusions, and practicing them.

In the beginning, his practices didn’t escape the eyes of his Aunt and Uncle, but they thought that, like all others, he’d bore of this hobby. They were surprised and disgruntled when he didn’t. They believed that illusions and such were not something that generally could get someone a large amount of money. A job was supposed to be able to support you, and they didn’t understand why Yan would want to learn “fake magic” when he could go to the university and learn magic such as reimancy or voiding. His Aunt and Uncle wanted him to be able to support himself, and worried about him especially for after they are gone. These thoughts were expressed to Yan many times, though they became much more forceful the older he became.

The only family member who supported his illusions was his Grandmother. She understood the meaning behind the sparkle in his eye when he practiced. Her grandson had found something important to him. She took delight in watching his tricks when he learned them, and loved to see him running to her to watch them.

Eventually though, when Yan turned fifteen, his Aunt and Uncle put their foot down. He wouldn’t be allowed to keep going down a “path of destruction”, as they phrased it. Their nephew didn’t take this well, and it ended in the biggest argument they’d ever had. That night, Yan stayed up stewing in anger. He couldn’t stay with them any longer; they didn’t understand him. A huge decision was made that night. He would run away, it was his only choice.

Yan set about sneakily gathering his things, thoughts of what he’d do and where he’d stay running through his mind. He wasn’t stupid enough to believe that he’d survive outside the city, so he’d have to stay within Zeltiva. His skills with sleight of hand and his tricks were good enough, he could live off any money he could make performing on the street. He supposed he’d have to live on the streets until he made some mizas then.

A soft clearing of his grandmother’s throat tore his attention away from his musings. She stood at the door of his room, leaning against the frame with a smile on her face. “Here, you’ll need this.” Outstretched in her hand was a small bag that, when checked, contained a good amount of money. She put a hand on his cheek and kissed his forehead. “Be careful.” Yan felt his eyes water as he hugged his grandmother, and left quickly, frightened that he’d change his mind on leaving.

It was shortly after this, while he was settling into staying in the World’s End Grotto, that Yan met Nine. There had been something different about her upon their meeting, and it wasn’t until later after an explanation that he realized that not only was she a Kelvic, but they had somehow managed to bond. He hadn’t been sure what to think of this at first, but now Nine is one of the most important things in his life.

Now Yan spends his days practicing his craft, putting on street performances with Nine, and dodging his Aunt and Uncle any time he sees them.

Performances

Many of Yan’s performances include sleight of hand with cards and illusions involving bait and switch. He also does tricks involving throwing daggers. He keeps many of the items that he needs for his performances in his vest which has many compartments and hidden pockets. Nine works as his assistant during their performances.
