A trip to the market!!!

It was an exceptionally warm night, like most other nights, but this one was special. He could smell the aroma of Inarta foods, and hear the load buzz that made its way up through the tunnels and caves. Today was Market day and Akule had been waiting 9 grueling days. If in one of his classmates was to ask him "Hey, do you know what we learned today?" he would most likely stare blankly at them and reply Do I know you? Wait..are you in one of my classes? The past days were a blur for him. Most days Akule would be in deep daydream imagining himself at the market only to be rudely awakened by an annoyed teacher. Quite frankly he wasn’t the only one with his head in the clouds. The teachers knew that this day was especially exciting for everyone.

Already Akule could hear people rushing through the many passages Wind Reach had, all flooding into The Inner Warrens on their way to the Market Place. His heart thumped with excitment feeling the electricity through the room. He reached into his pouch and felt around the bottom, his fingertips raked in search of his pinions. When he felt no more he pulled his fist out and spread his fingers. With the free hand Akule pushed a lock of his bright red hair from his eyes view and began counting "1...2...3...4...". he already knew he had 100 Pinions but felt the need to count them again. As Akule continued whispering numbers a group of Inarta children around his age darted by. One of them bumped into Akule nearly knocking every pinion from his hand, but thanks to his quick reflexes he was able to clench his hand back into a fist before no more than 3 escaped. His green eyes quickly darted upward keeping track of each one. Akule must have looked like a chicken dipping below the crowd then lifting his head in the sea of people only to dip down and pick up another pinion. He finally reached the last one and lifted it to his lips. Puckering his lips Akule let out a deep sigh of relief, kissed the pinion and placed it and the rest into the pouch and securely tied it.

Akule looked to the horizon over the people’s heads. Squinting his eyes he tried to make out the path toward the Market Place. Once spotted Akule began making his way toward it. He was excited but did not rush. Carefully making his way through the crowd he couldn’t help but smile. Akule heard girls snickering to his right, their hands raised and fingers pointing to his left. His eyes traced the invisible lines that shot from their fingertips until they fell upon a group of boys huddled in a semi-circle chanting and cheering. Once his eyes fully focused he was able to make the scene out better. There was a group of boys a bit older than he was wrestling and tossing each other around. It all went so quick. The boys grunted and groaned trying to overpower each other until one let up and was thrown to the ground. The group roared and the victor of the match raised both his arms in triumph and screamed louder then them all. All the yelling had toned down to a variety of different laughter’s. Those of the girls to his right and boys to his left. After all was said and done the winning boy reached his hand out, helped the loser up and helped him dust off his back. Akule could tell they must of been close friends, even siblings perhaps, the way they hugged after. His smile transformed from a subtle grin to a goofy smile that stretched from ear to ear. To his surprise the girls laughter began again. When he looked to see what they had been laughing about, still grinning ridiculously, he was surprised to see they had now turned their attention toward him. His grin melted off his face and felt his cheeks heat up. Akule let his head fall and eyes rise only high enough to see where he was going. His face must have been as red as his hair. Shaking the thought from his head he continued walking. He hoped he would see someone he knew even if it was only a little bit and join them for the night. If not he would attempt to make a friend before the day was done. People were in great moods so it shouldn't be that hard to make a new friend right?

A trip to the market!!!

Postby Akule on August 20th, 2013, 4:06 pm

After maybe thirty chimes Akule had finally arrived to The Courtyard in the Sky. What an overwhelming sight it was, just breathtaking. His eyes darted from stall to stall seeing which one he would go to first. He could tell the different between the castes just by looking at the clothing they wore. He could also tell the inner most circle surrounded by two more rings must have been the most expensive just by the merchandise they had. Akule's attention had been so focused on the market he hadn't even noticed a man standing at the entrance of courtyard. He was a husky man and stood with a discouraging face. Anyone who had been to the market knew this man, his name was Derdain. He watched over the entire courtyard making sure there wasn't any trouble.

As Akule made it to the entrance he was stopped by a hand placed against his chest. Looking down he traced the hand to the origin of its owner and met eyes with Derdain. "What is your business here boy?" Derdain asked. His mind was racing because he knew children weren't allowed at The market without an adult, yet there he was alone. He quickly thought up a lie and spoke "I was here with an Avora who was going to take me shopping but we were separated in the large crowd, no thanks to my height I wasn't able to find her". Akule remained as calm as he possibly could, but wondered if Derdain could hear his heart pounding in his chest. It had been like Derdain read his mind because just as the thought crossed he let out a grunt. His crossed arms unlocked and fell to his knees. Derdain squinted his eyes and leaned to match Akules height and looked him directly in the eyes. "You wouldn't be lying to me would you boy? That would be very bad...very, very bad" Derdain's voice was deep and suspecting. Akule felt as if he was looking right through him. The moments dragged by awkwardly as Derdain remained a few inches from his face awaiting an answer. Akule smiled nervously and replied "Of course not...why would I do that?" By the way has anyone told you have really nice eyes?" Akule hoped a compliment would help except it didn't, it only made things worst. Derdain shook his head and grabbed Akule by his arm. "I've got to admit, it was a nice try kid. You ALMOST had me fooled" Akule attempted to protest speaking a mile a minute. "Please I promise I won't cause any trouble, please don’t make me wait until the next Market Day. I've been waiting so long... he reached into his bag and pulled a couple of pinions out. Akule bounced his eyebrows and offered a few to Derdain "Here now you can get yourself something to drink or something, I mean you must get so thirsty standing here in the sun. Maybe get that special girl something that will make her notice you...ehh how 'bout it?" Akule shot Derdain a cheesy smile and poked him in the belly and winked. Derdain just stared at him with a blank face, had Akule not been so young he would have mostly likely lifted him and tossed him to the other side of the entrance. Derdain stood and closed the boys hand into a fist. "I don't want your pinions boy...go home" he said.

Akule frowned and let out a small sigh. As he was turning to leave he noticed a commotion going on behind Derdain. He could see a man (which appeared to be a dek) running from one of the food stalls. The merchant quickly raised a blood red cloth and screamed "THEIF!!!! GET HIM BEFORE HE GETS AWAY WITH MY GOODS....THEIF, THEIF!!!!" The lowest caste was sometimes known to get food the only way they could, by stealing it. Derdain turned his sights on the merchant yelling. The Avora pointed in the direction the criminal had run. As Derdain scanned the crowd and found the dek bobbing and weaving through the crowd. This was it...the distraction Akule needed to desperately. Without thinking he sprinted behind Derdain into the market. He found a big crowd and blended himself in. When Derdain turned to tell the boy to go home once more he was nowhere to be found. Shaking his head he let out a grunt and took chase after the dek who had stolen. Akule peeked around the crowd and saw Derdain was gone. He let out a deep breath of relief and smiled. "Haha I made it in, yes!" he whispered. Akule stopped and looked around and thought "So where first?"
