Character Concept
Personality - Unlike many Vantha, Mendar is soft-spoken. He tends to bow his head and mutter when he speaks. His disposition changes noticeably when he plays his lute. He becomes lively, filled with passion and vivacity. The change is quite startling for those who do not know him well.
Ethics - Mendar bases his ethical beliefs on the sanctity of all life. He believes that if an action should disrupt that sanctity, it should be judged accordingly. Mendar struggles with hatred that he doesn't understand. His mind, without forethought, judges those he comes by either positively or negatively. It is difficult for Mendar to overcome his preconceived notions of people. He believes this is in violation of his belief in the sanctity of life. It is a constant struggle to do battle with his judgmental thoughts.
Likes - Music. Quiet conversations. His lute. Smoked salmon.
Dislikes - Annoying people. His parents. Domineering personalities. Warm climates.

Character History
Mendar Snowsong was born in Avanthal on the 64th day of Winter in 489 AV. He was raised by his parents, Midgroth and Aya, who nurtured him with care but suffered from excess strictness and perfectionism. They were a stereotypical Vantha couple--married at a young age, matched by their parents before them, and trained in the ways of theater and music. In conversation, they were exuberant and pleasant. Mendar never was the most exciting conversationalist. When he played his lute, he was as lively as any of the other Vantha. But at large gatherings, he was reserved. He tended to stay in the corner, away from raucous merrymaking and animated confabulation. The only one he could talk to comfortably was his sister, Mayana. They would talk for hours about everything--life, personal struggles, likes, dislikes. Mayana was a great listener. She was lively, just like her parents, but she knew how to "stoop to Mendar's level" and treat him with respect.
That is, until everything changed.
When Mayan turned 16, Mendar's parents went from peaceful, pleasant people to nettling busybodies. They were everywhere at once, soliciting for potential suitors in the hope that Mayana would not become an "Icemaiden." To Midgroth and Aya, the word "Icemaiden" was like the worst expletive imaginable. Uttering it was like uttering anathema itself. They couldn't bear to say the word themselves. They would spit and shiver and shake their heads as if they had eaten something nasty.
Four years passed fruitlessly. By the time Mayana had turned twenty years old, Midgroth and Aya had failed to find a suitor. No one in all of Avanthal wanted to merry her. Mendar couldn't imagine why. She was the best Vantha he had ever known.
Rather than give Mayana the celebration she deserved, Midgroth and Aya shunned her on her birthday. They informed her that she was no longer welcome in their house and that she ought to leave Avanthal before she disgraced her family. Mendar was shaken. Mayana was as well. But before Mendar could speak to mend the incurable wounds, Mayana was gone. She left later that evening under the Morwen's Lights, shimmering and dancing in the heavens. Three years have passed, and Mendar hasn't seen her since. He vows to one day find her and bring her home to reunite with her mother and father.
"I have experienced my family's own personal Valterrian." - Mendar
