Location Lantern Square

This is where the elite of Kenash come to gossip and enjoy refreshments on warm evenings and on days off.

This lazy agricultural settlement rests on the swampy shores of the Middle Suvan at the delta of The Kenash River. The River's slow moving bayou waters have bred a different sort of people - rugged, cultured, and somewhat violent. Sprawling plantations of tobacco and cotton grow on the outskirts of the swamp in the rich Cyphrus soils, while the city itself curls around the bayou and spawns decadence and sins of all sorts. Life is slower in Kenash, but the lack of pace is made up for in the excesses of food and flesh in a city where drinking, debauchery, gambling, slavery, and overbearing plantation families dominate the landscape.

Lantern Square is a popular social gathering spot for the city of Kenash. Outdoors is often cooler than inside, especially in the evenings, for all but about one season of the year. So Kenasherns tend to gather in places such as Lantern Square socially to discuss business, pleasure, and engage in social niceties and light banter. Lantern Square is frequented by Dynasty members especially, though an occasional freeborn is found there as well mingling with the wealth and elite. In terms of construction, Lantern Square is found at the apex of two shell roads that pass through Kenash between two of Kenash's major bridges. The roads are slightly elevated and pass by the northwest edge of the square. Long steps lead down into the square giving it an overall sunken feel. Trees line the square, old sweetgum and magnolia trees along with titi, tupelo, and swamp red maple. The square is always shaded and each bow of most of the prominent and oldest trees in the square are draped with lanterns.

Furniture arranged in outdoor groupings are scattered about. These elegant furnishings were assembled over time, gifts from various families to help decorate the otherwise plain square. Each piece has a small plague on it denoting where or whom it was donated from. Snows cause the square to be emptied out and the furnishings stored once more for more favorable seasons. Cleaning is preformed by slaves assigned to keep the city trash free and things like flower baskets well watered in the evening. They move about unobtrusively and try not to bother the inhabitants of the square when they are involved in their work. A city assigned gardening staff designs and plants the flowers and cares for the trees that line the square.

Lantern Square has no set hours of operation. It is generally occupied during various times of the day and night. There is no carriage accessibility to the square, so all horses and vehicles must be left at the livery.

Name: Jemi
Race: Human Slave

PoB: Kenash - (Whitesnake, The Lorak Plantation)
Title: Lamplighter
Skills: Candlemaking 55, Lamplighting 85, Socialization 15

Additional Info: Jemi is officially owned by the Lorak family. Jemi is responsible for lighting all the lights in the squares throughout Kenash. As such she carries a long staff with a candle on it and a specialized hook designed to open all the lanterns that grace Kenash's squares and light the candles inside. When she is not lighting or snuffing candles, Jemi is manufacturing new candles and replacing the ones that have burned down to stubs. Its also her duty to polish and clean lanterns as well. During the day if one sees her out and about, over her arm is always a replacement basket filled with new candles if a lantern has to have its light source replaced, which is frequently. Conversely, she snuffs them as well when the dawn breaks. Her duties start a little before dusk and end when she is finished. At dawn, her job is to snuff all the candles. During the daylight hours she makes new candles, cleans lanterns, and replaces their light sources.

Goods And Services
Because Lantern Square is a social gathering spot, rules apply to folks hawking wares. Vendors who grace Lantern Square with their presence must remain on the fringes of the square and be unobtrusive in their sales. No cries of wine or finger treats cry out and ruin the mood of the square. Instead shops lining the square sell small delicious treats while an occasional basket bearing vendor or small cart pushing slave sells fresh fruit, cream, or even some chilled wines from a portable ice box.

If a person wants refreshments, it is indeed to be had in Lantern Square. They are just subtle and unobtrusive about it. PCs should feel free to RP purchasing small beverages and snacks in any vendor they can imagine being around so long as the vendor is clean, sells food that appeals to humans, and fits the overall Kenash Theme.
