This lazy agricultural settlement rests on the swampy shores of the Middle Suvan at the delta of The Kenash River. The River's slow moving bayou waters have bred a different sort of people - rugged, cultured, and somewhat violent. Sprawling plantations of tobacco and cotton grow on the outskirts of the swamp in the rich Cyphrus soils, while the city itself curls around the bayou and spawns decadence and sins of all sorts. Life is slower in Kenash, but the lack of pace is made up for in the excesses of food and flesh in a city where drinking, debauchery, gambling, slavery, and overbearing plantation families dominate the landscape.

General Information

ImageFire Island Herbs and Essences is a lonely structure out on the windward side of Fire Island facing the sea. Built into what was once a small Syliran Knight Outpost, the shop and personal home of its mistress has been converted to suit its present purposes nicely. The 3,000 square foot structure resting on two acres has multiple tiers and is accessible by both beach and a small entrance topside through some cultivated garden. Partially above ground and partially built within the stone cliff itself, the shop is dynamic and uniquely designed to both withstand Kenash’s often fierce storms and oppressive heat. Living space is found throughout, with garden space being utilized on the roof and up and down the uneven walls.

Fire Island gets its name from its rocky surfaces formed volcanically and exposed by the Kenash River’s slow sultry migration to the sea. Unlike most volcanic rock, the island isn’t made of light weight rock, like pumice, caused by voids left by gasses escaping from the molten lava as it cools. Instead Fire Island is comprised of the harder volcanic stone, ranging from aphanite which have large crystals embedded in the fine grained mass to a deep blue black obsidian which resembles glass. The stone of the island sparkles with its inclusions of quartz and other gemstones, making its name doubly relevant and the place very attractive to stone hunters. The finer stones also break down quickly, and thanks to the river’s seasonal flooding, Fire Island has excellent topsoil and is easily used for gardening plants of all varieties in the stone crevasse and soil deposits. Trees have taken root on its beaches and among its small meadow pockets and flood zones, causing some of the places on the island to be accessible only by raised walkway or by stone path.

It was within this environment that the Syliran Knights placed a long abandoned outpost reachable by a series of bridges that overlooked The Kenash River Delta. The Outpost was a small one, comprised of quarters enough for a few knights to live in seasonally and maintain way stations scattered down the Kabrian Road towards Riverfall. When Kenash was formally settled – partially due to the stability the outpost created – the Syliran Knights backed out of the city and the structure became irrelevant to the needs of the city.

ImageThe abandoned outpost’s innate structure lends itself perfectly to a combination shop and living working quarters for an herbalist who needed twin labs and places to tend plants and mix herbal potions. Retail space was set up in the stone walls in what was once the common living area of the knights. This living area was built into the stone itself from a large cave, though the walls and ceilings have been hewn smooth and painted so it does not resemble its humble origins. The shop is located slightly above the beach level with its entrance on the side of a small waterfall that forms from a tiny branch of the river forcing its way across Fire Island. Trees dot the stone landscape as a stone stair leads up to the entrance.

The retail space is filled with shelves of spices, dried herbs, hanging herbs and candles. Incense is stored in one section, a lit stick usually curling up smoke in the air, drawing in customers and enticing them to take the scents home with them.

Potted plants line the upper portion where the old outpost had old stables that have long since vanished in the course of weather. Haeli grows her plants there, mixing in river mud with clay soil to form a rich growing medium. There are always small starts and larger well established plants and trees to choose from. She sells on a small order case by case, so any grafting or production she does rarely results in the quantity that would supply a plantation. There are plans, in the future, to open a courtyard built with stacked stone to display more of her potted plants outdoors.

On the outside, a second rough hewn staircase runs from the beach level to the upper levels where Haeli keeps all her potted plants. This structure links the retail space inside with the potted plants on what qualifies as a roof for the Outpost structure which is actually built into a cliff.

Haeli has just started learning about doves. As of such, she is not considered a breeder, more perhaps a caretaker than anything. She does have doves available for ceremonies such as weddings, funerals, and of course for food.

The Living Quarters

ImageLocated on the mid level, not quite at the beach where the retail shop level rests nor at the top of the old outpost, Haeli’s living quarters occupy the central area of the converted space. A sweeping stairway goes from the topside entrance where all her living potted plants are downward to the living space. There are no walls here. Instead the floor plan is open and comforting, part cave and part stacked stone seawall. The ceiling is high, as befitting the awkward hall that used to occupy this structure. An enormous stone fireplace rests against one wall with room to stack wood in recessed crevasse on either side. Across, but not too close, is a large four poster bed draped with linens. The heat that keeps the structure cool in the sweltering Kenash summers also tends to reflect and absorb the fireplaces heat, making the old outpost quite comfortable in the winter as well.

Minimalist in design, Fire Island Herbs and Essences has a noted lack of furniture. There is a desk and bookshelf, and of course chest and wardrobe for clothing, but that is about all. There are tapestries on the wall left over from the Syliran era, most of which depict sunrises or sunsets over the bayou of the Kenash River. Haeli’s favorite, a worn slightly frayed tapestry, depicts two heron’s flying in the sky.

ImageThrow rugs occupy spaces here and there, warming up what could be an otherwise cold trek across a stone floor. They are colorful and match the decor, adding inexpensive cheer to the otherwise high ceiling room.

Little touches fill the space, namely dried flowers framed in crudely fashioned homemade driftwood frames on the wall. Vases of flowers or wild grasses - depending on the season - grace low tables. All the containers were unique, unusual, and thought-provoking. These tables are also decorated with flotsam washed up on the shore or found salvaged from the river. A fossilized seashell rests on one shelf while a particularly beautiful piece of agate graces another. Nothing is expensive that decorates the space. Instead, each piece seems to be a memory of something or someone.

Potted vines that can grow in the sub par light of the inner living quarters grow up stone walls, finding purchase in crevasse and on trellises made from dried branches and driftwood. Depending on the season, some of these vines flower and perfume the living space with both the exotic and the familiar.

ImageIn front of the fireplace is a large pile of cured furs. All the fur is from native animals that are easily found in Kenash or the Sea of Grass. Sometimes taking such things in as trade, Haeli is less attached to coin transactions than what other business owners be. Part of her decor comes from trades done for herbals and scents. The rugs certainly, and even something as mundane as a small swatch of beautiful cloth hung up to add to the decor.

Candles line the walls, shoved in bottles and containers that are less than traditional candle holders. Haeli seems to have a fondness for sea glass, because it dominates her decorating along with shells and feathers. Occasional bird skulls, teeth, and even a claw or two from various predators grace her shelves. The collection is utterly without style and can be deemed nothing but eclectic. Overall the living quarters are warm, welcoming, and inviting to those that loved nature. To those more accustomed to city life, the place would feel decidedly feral. The two labs, both herbalism and philtering, are off the retail space on the lower level. There is even storage in a sub basement though Haeli hasn’t utilized it yet.

The Garden And Dovecot

ImageHaeli has only about two acres of garden space. In the future, she hopes to change that. But until that time, she has utilized reclaimed space in the form of fissures, rock basins, and uneven spots in the stone walls both inside and outside of Fire Island Herbs and Essences. And in this reclaimed space, she si growing everything possible under the sun. Herbs, strawberries, small trees, even berry bushes are carefully cultivated. The witch has hauled bucket after bucket of river mud to mix in with the native clay soil where it is still found, creating rich environments for plants to thrive.

ImageJust because Haeli doesn't own huge chunks of acreage, doesn't mean she doesn't grow in containers and every space she can possibly fine. The Witch makes serious use of her two acres. Haeli is frugal and grows anywhere and everywhere she can. Whatever found container or traded item she will most likely utilize to plant something in. The witch keeps telling herself she is going to take lessons in ceramics so she can throw her own pots and save herself money and time since Kenash has abundant river clay which makes extremely good potting soil when mixed with river mud.

And while she grows food, Haeli is tremendously conscious of planting things that can utilize each other in her work. For example, stiff stocked flowers and herbs always get planted with creeping herbs that need the stocks to grow big and strong along... letting one support the other.

One new endeavor to Haeli, since coming to Kenash, is the learning of dove handling and raising. She's interested in the creatures not only as a source of food but also as a source of fertilizer for her plants and to sell as food and fertilizer to other crop producers. Haeli's dovecot spirals several stories into the air and has a ladder that swings around in a circular fashion to reach even the highest dove roost. The dovecot itself is a small tower on the top of Fire Island Herbs and Essences, a relic from the Syliran Knight era where the birds were housed and used as messengers. Haeli has no homing pigeons or trained messenger birds. All she indeed has is meat birds. She loves very much their coloring and tends to try and get more and more outrageous colored creatures through the pairings she establishes. Though its slow going, Haeli is determined to learn bird keeping and animal husbandry to give her doves the best possible care. And besides, the bird droppings are an excellent source of fertilizer for the soil she's always constantly amenting.
