The Lily Pad Farms The yellow lily-pad is a basic food in Ravok, and its invasive nature ensures fast growth and a constant supply in Ravok's moderate temperatures. On the Western shore of Lake Ravok, the crops are grown and harvested on a 50 mile stretch of the shore, right to the Cattail farms. Established in 200 AV, by an old family who found a way to control the invasive species, it has long been a reliable food source for Ravokians. Though the crops have since changed hands many times, recently to the Etravin Family, it still looks the same as it did when it was started. The lily-pad farm is sectioned into five farms, each 10 miles long, and 2 miles out into the lake. Tall wooden markers show the boundaries of each farm, though the lily-pads themselves are one seamless line for 100 square miles. Every morning on the seventh bell, the farms come to life. Workers begin to pull up the fully matured lilies, reaching down to dig out the roots, and tossing them into a water-tight basket provided at the beginning of the day. Each individual worker is placed in charge of 2 square miles of the crop, though can request more for a slightly higher pay. After harvesting is completed, the lilies are sent to the mill. Not far back from the farmhouses where workers converge at the beginning of the day, lie the mills where workers take their produce to be sorted into what will be dried and ground, and the other to be taken fresh with the next boat out to the market. The mills themselves are powered by horses, four going around one large stock, with two stocks in each mill to grind the dried lily-pads. Loaded onto boats bearing the Etravin name, the produce is taken into the market, sold in blue-clothed booths, and into the hands of the cooks and the families in Ravok.   Head of the Lily Pad Farms Name: Mal Etravin DOB: 77th of Fall, 483 AV POB: Ravok Skills: Agriculture (68), Leadership (35), Organization (30), Negotiation (15), Persuasion (10) Mal is the eldest son of the Etravin patriarch, Neal, thus in training as the next head of family. With wavy dark black hair that often interrupts a dour blue gaze, Mal is a tall tanned man with a fair build from working the feilds since he was very young. Though the farms are individually owned and operated by family members, Mal is the man that stands between the owners of the farms and Ravok's market. A calculating worker, Mal takes care not to step on toes as he transports and sells the produce of the lilies under only the Etravin name. He hires for all of the lilypad farms, and deems not only pay for them, but their days working also. If the lilypad market falls, or the farms collapse, Mal knows he will be the one that has to answer. With that in mind, Mal is not easy to please, or gain the trust of.   Head of the Mill Name: Tyvlin Etravin DOB: 51st of Summer, 479 AV POB: Ravok Skills: Leadership (50), Organization (43), Agriculture (35) Tyvlin is the Head of the Mills for the Lily-pad farms, and oversees the processes of sorting, drying, and grinding of the produce. Barely passed 5' 3", Tyvlin has dark brown hair, though it's cropped short to his head with a light green gaze. Though each owner of the farm individually decides how much to grind, and how much to send fresh, Tyvlin keeps ledgers of the amount. Working closely with the Mal, Tyvlin ensures the amounts reflect the demand of the Ravokians, and guide the owners of the farms with suggested amounts for the next day. A man of few words, and lots of action, Tyvlin is efficient and organized. As a non-blooded member of the Etravin family, Tyvlin holds one of the highest positions he can, though, for only so long as a blooded member does not have their eyes set on it. In charge of hiring for the mills, buying and maintaining the horses, and keeping the mill in shape, Tyvlin is much a perfectionist, determined to keep his hard-earned position. Uses of the Yellow Lily : The Roots Can be added, chopped, or whole, to garnish food Dried, ground, roots can be used as flour Tea from steeped roots can cure chills and mild colds (medicinal) Poulticed can be applied to teat swelling, inflammation, and cuts (medicinal) Contains tannin, when used fresh, to aid dyes and tanning The Seeds Can be ground into flour Toasted to swell and be eaten warm The Leaves and Stem Ground into flour to make bread, porridge, or thicken soup Added ground as a garnish to a meal Leaves contain tannin when used fresh, to aid dyes and tanning Flower Steeped, fresh, in tea to make a floral drink Dried and steeped in warm water, allowed to chill, to make a cold refreshing drink Moderator Note: PM a Storyteller if interested in a job here
