Location The Midnight Market

Kenash's all night market is the center of nefarious underground doings.

This lazy agricultural settlement rests on the swampy shores of the Middle Suvan at the delta of The Kenash River. The River's slow moving bayou waters have bred a different sort of people - rugged, cultured, and somewhat violent. Sprawling plantations of tobacco and cotton grow on the outskirts of the swamp in the rich Cyphrus soils, while the city itself curls around the bayou and spawns decadence and sins of all sorts. Life is slower in Kenash, but the lack of pace is made up for in the excesses of food and flesh in a city where drinking, debauchery, gambling, slavery, and overbearing plantation families dominate the landscape.

Built within the southern plaza of Blade Island, The Midnight Market unrolls its doors as the sun goes down. Pre-dusk, half the shops that line the street are open and sell mundane items along the lines of household goods and services in what is only called unimaginatively Blade Plaza. The Plaza is as ordinary as rabbit stew and about as exciting. Under the hot Kenash Sun, Blade Plaza swelters in a sea of ordinary dealings, completely utilitarian, and utterly un-noteworthy.

When the sun sets, however, things change. Vendors transition from day to night, and the daytime shops close and the nighttime shops open. The Blade Plaza market transforms into The Midnight Market and things get increasingly more dangerous. Some say the heartbeat of evil in Kenash dwells within this plaza. It's certainly true that darkness can be found here. Dangerous chemicals, magic, and substances abound. Transactions happen in every corner of the plaza, sometimes in the open and sometimes in the carefully orchestrated shadows. It is here that unfortunate both male and female freeborn and slaves walk the streets, exchanging coin for five minutes of rutting in the amassed without the need for fancy rooms or carefully powdered faces and bathed bodies. Blood flows freely here as well, for some lives are carefully crossed out with red ink and marked for death by very real coin crossing palms. Lives hang in the balance in The Midnight Market. Help can be found here, but so too can destruction.

There is often the odd busker or fortune teller about as well, infiltrating the crowd and spicing it up the hawkers and crooners advertising wares nightly.

Physically the plaza is large, bisected by decorative canals that help drain the water from Blade Island and the oft flooded Reed Park. These canals are bisected by large bridges that are strong enough for carts and foot traffic and the occasional horse. Lasher, the Market Architech demands beauty and perfection in the decor of the market, so there are potted trees and plants abound decorating the plaza. Fufilling his love of color as well, Lasher has made sure that the paint is always fresh on the buildings, sidewalks and cobbles are clean, and that lanterns hung up throughout the market are not only of high quality but often of colored glass to cast intriguing and artistic light throughout the space.

Name: Lasher Radacke
Race: Human
DoB: 485 AV (28)
PoB: Kenash
Title: Proprietor of The Midnight Market
Skills: Business 80, Mathematics 72, Negotiation 65, Torture 61, Intimidation 59, Subterfuge 35, Larceny 43, Persuasion 50
Gnosis: Yshulis 3, Omaru 2
Additional Info: Lasher, as many of his friends and enemies call him, is the youngest of Mica Radacke's offspring. He rose among the Radacke ranks rather quickly but was not content to stay with his siblings and work under his father's hand. Branching out from the family business, Lash quickly worked his way up in the eyes of two of Mizahar's divine beings - Ovak and Yshul. Being smooth and meddlesome, Yshul latched onto him and after what is rumored to be an affair, made him one of her priests. Ovek, having been impressed with Lash's abilities with numbers crunching marked him as well. Lasher, you see, is something of a mathematical genius. He can do complex calculations in his head and that puts him years ahead of others in the realm of business.

Unfortunately as brilliant as he is with numbers, Lasher is equally as mean as a snake. Constantly at war with the Sitai Family, Lasher deals them blows wherever he can. This has happened namely because Lasher likes what they deal in - drugs, hallucinogens, and poisons. He's made it his job to better market, better supply, and be the end of the roads in terms of the person to go to in Kenash to 'acquire' things.

It is even rumored that Lash has a team of assassins working under him as well that enforce his laws in the Midnight Market and beyond. The Market exists, and Lasher knows it, through the good graces of the Magistrate. So inevitably a significant portion of the market's profits go to line the Magistrate's pockets and for the most part make Lasher and his operation untouchable in Kenash.

Goods And Services
Anything and everything is for sale in The Midnight Market.
One can conceivably bet that about fifty percent of the goods here are stolen. The other fifty percent were obtained in rather dubious means.
If you wish to set up shop here, there are fees involved that are paid directly to Lasher.

FEES

  • Market Shop Space - This involves actually having a small shop in the market itself. Rental of shop space covers a 200 sq foot room with one side facing out into the market. If one sells goods, 25% of the profits go to Lasher. If one sells food stuffs, Lasher only takes 10% of the total profits. Cost: 1 GM per/day per 200 sqft space. Multiple spaces can be leased together.
  • Market Foot Sales - Often vendors in the market can hawk their wares from carts or even from their trench coat pockets. These inventive salesman roam the Midnight Market and change locations frequently. However, just because they are on foot doesn't mean they don't give Lasher his cut. They do. Because if he finds them working the market without paying him his due, they vanish. Cost: 1 SM per/day per salesman.

GOODS AND SERVICES

Almost everything can be had at the Midnight Market.
Feel free to self moderate. Be inventive how you acquire your goods and services though.
Follow all the posted prices on The Price List.
And if you want to hire the services of an assassin or something equally nefarious,
please speak to a moderator about it before posting in this thread.

A WORD OF WARNING

Lasher tolerates no stealing or thievery in his Market that is not controlled by his own people.
Thieves, pickpockets, even buskers who do not pay him his cut are immediately and swiftly dealt with.
Most of the time they end up chained, branded and for sale in The Auction House.
Sometimes, however, they end up washed up on Glass Beach dead.
