Completed [Kenash Auction House] A New Nanny

With the protection of Sypha, Inari and Fiora attend an afternoon slave auction.

This lazy agricultural settlement rests on the swampy shores of the Middle Suvan at the delta of The Kenash River. The River's slow moving bayou waters have bred a different sort of people - rugged, cultured, and somewhat violent. Sprawling plantations of tobacco and cotton grow on the outskirts of the swamp in the rich Cyphrus soils, while the city itself curls around the bayou and spawns decadence and sins of all sorts. Life is slower in Kenash, but the lack of pace is made up for in the excesses of food and flesh in a city where drinking, debauchery, gambling, slavery, and overbearing plantation families dominate the landscape.

Quinn shifted in his seat uncomfortably. What in Miz...Why were these chairs so uncomfortable? Reaching back, he pulled his bow out from behind his back. Well this place was definitely not built with the slightly more rough and tumble crowd in mind. He mused to himself in relief as he set the bow in between his legs, one end resting on the floor below, the other against the side of his head. His shifting about, caused his overcoat to be pushed aside and reveal to anyone taking notice just the tip of a cutlass he also possessed.

His attention turned to the rather fancy couple who had arrived to sit next to him. There eyes opened widely in surprise at the armed slaver, who's company they seemed to be forced to be sharing. He gave a small smile to them, if completely insincere. Turning back to the stage he rolled his eyes a bit. Ugg, more snobs put off by the working class. I take it back! I want to be nothing like them...I just want their mizahs. He once again, thought almost laughingly to himself.

He soon returned his focus to the main stage of events, his interest only barely being held by what he saw. Some slaves were just tiny little things he supposed meant for housework. Nope. Not going to work. A couple seemed strong, but stood like drones. Again not what he was looking for. He needed a slave that had a brain. Not just a mindless serf. At about the time Quinn was beginning to imagine all hope was lost for this auction, there she was! His gaze was soon enraptured by a certain female slave.

Compared to the woman that had been brought before her, she stood fairly tall. There was also a certain...defiance about her step that caught his eye. A fire that seemed undimmed despite the best efforts of the Auction House. Hmm, will have to keep an eye on that one. He to himself as he ran a hand across the stubble on his chin. She seemed rather attractive as well, though from this distance, he couldn't be sure. He hope her somewhat abnormal height and fiery attitude would be enough to put off the rest of the buyers. But then, only time could solve that mystery.

Quinn's concentration on the slave of interest, was momentarily broken by the chiding rebuke of one of the fine looking ladies he had moved by a few chimes prior. Had he heard something about being married? Quinn honestly couldn't be sure. For he had been too focused on his task at hand. A slight gaze backward, was reward with another glimpse of the duo...or trio now as he only then caught sight of another fellow who seemed to be watching over them.

Ah, wealth a privilege. Still, it was probably wise to bring a guard along. Even in the heart of Kenash where the upper echelon were probably safest. He suspected it must be similar to the woods. You are often in the most danger when in the place you feel the safest. A small grin tugged at the corner of his mouth as he turned back to the days events. His grin only widening somewhat more at the sound of their giggling.

Although Quinn's curiosity had him wondering about what they were talking about. His business side, finally got the better of him and urged him to return his attention to the stage. Surely they would be about ready to start. Right? He wanted, to have this over with so he could get back to work. Training the new slave in her ...duties would take time, and he Quinn suspected a decent amount of effort.

Well, out on the stage. Again. The slave were all shorter than she was, and she looked down in interest. Okay, most of them were shorter. There were one or two men taller, but they had no spirit. None of them. It was pretty sad. The lioness tossed her head, blonde locks settling on her shoulders. Best to look as confident as possible. It turned off the buyers.

She didn't really want to be bought. It was fun taunting Marshal. Mal straightened her posture, tilting her chin up and staring down her nose at those who might become her new masters. Two groups stood out to her. A man with sandy hair. Had she seen him before? Her eyes narrowed. Well-muscled, tanned skin... Probably a slaver. The Kelvic's lip turned up in a sneer.

But there were the others, as well. Looked to be two Dynasty brats, although they were grown women. Another man, most likely their bodyguard. The Families seemed to be perpetually accompanied by guards of some sort. Didn't feel safe otherwise.

Back to the women. Both had short hair, although the one who looked to be taller and possibly younger had wilder strands. Dark in hair, but not in flesh, whereas her companion was dark in both. The pair was slender, no doubt from days inside. She couldn't tell which Family they came from, though. They looked... almost displeased by the auction. Giggling like teenage girls, they were. From the direction of their glances, it was the supposedly 'handsome' slaver.

Their bodyguard didn't have much to look at. Obviously male, from the foot that graced the chair next to his dark-skinned charge. Unless women had feet like that. Some type of shawl-thing meant to conceal his features from those whose senses weren't as keen. Swords, too. Supposed to be intimidating. If she were facing him, she'd probably talk him to death.

Mal had been frozen to the spot the whole time, refusing to move even when her chain was jerked. However, the next slave simply walked into the girl's back and she pitched forwards. The Kelvic caught herself, unfortunately looking like a fool and pinwheeling her arms. This earned laughs from the gathered crowd. She cast them a baleful glare, tilted her head back once more and walked as proudly as possible after the embarassing stumble.

"Petchin' Dynasty brats. Hate 'em. Petch you all!"

The expression was accompanied by a rather rude gesture.

-The flirtaceous interaction was carefully observed by the silent sentry. He could not make out
what their low toned voices were saying about the solitary slaver infront of them, but it had
obviously gotten Quinn's attention. The brief glance backward gave the bow wielding stranger
a full view of the three before turning back to the nearly organized Auction. The sudden
erruption of delicate laughter then escaped the two Dynasty women who were focused on the
nonchalant slaver. Sypha was right about them not having a care in the world. Oh yes, that's
right, the Mercenary was supposed to be caring for them.

-If Quinn didn't notice when he first approached that Inari and Fiora had a personal guard,
he would know now with the recent glance. It mattered not if people knew he was here, or even
why he had accompanied the lovely ladies to this site. What mattered, at least at this moment,
was the Eypharian's capability to keep obstacles and dangers from crossing the womens' path.
No one was to invade their personal space, which was an invisible circle centered around both
that only Sypha could see, since it was his imagination that manifested it.

-Boisterous laughter from the gathered crowd signaled that there was a possible situation
with one of the slaves. Sypha Kai's keen attention was drawn away for but a moment, taking in
the comedic spectacle displayed upon the dias. He had missed what had initially caused the
infectious laughter, but now he could see a lean and lengthy slave giving everyone in the Auction
House a brazen gesture. Her spew of vulgarity could barely be heard over the clamor of the newly
awakened crowd. If he were to ever own a slave, it would definately not be that type. While some
actually enjoyed the -breaking- of an unruly slave, Sypha Kai perfered immediate obediance.

-The auctioneer who had settled himself behind the podium was trying with great difficulty to
calm the crowd down, for he wanted nothing more than to start the auction. It took a few
moments for those in attendance to finally settle their voices to a dull roar, then from there
that rolling roar became a wide spread whisper. This was the audio level that the auctioneer
needed so that the raised volume of his nonvirtuous voice could elevate over the gathering.
He needed to rush this batch of hopeless and defiant slaves off the dias, for he could tell by
the sheer size of this afternoon crowd that it would be a long, very long day.

-When Sypha Kai realized that the auction was nearing its initial proceedures, his calculating
mind went back to work, slowly scanning the quieted crowd for potential enemies. His lower
right gloved hand, hidden beneath the folds of his thick cloak, clung lovingly to the short
sword upon his left hip. This had been his Father's blade, a wicked blade that held many a
story behind its incisive edge, a thirsty blade that was constructed out of steel and Benshira
bone. His lower left gloved hand, crossed gently against the other, held the slender hilt of
his opposite, and much different, short sword. The length and sharpness may have been
equal to the other, but the design was much more elegant. Not only that, but this sword
held an unnatural chill to it, like the unforgiving cold that escapes Morwen's lips.

The auction was beginning, and Inari tensed. It was always uncomfortable, watching them being dragged out onto the stage, their heads bowed, shoulders sagged. The Lorak knew as well as anyone that this was simply the way things were, but it was unpleasant all the same.

One of the slaves, however, seemed so blatantly unlike the rest that it made Inari blink twice, just to make sure she wasn't seeing things. Tall and proud, this particular slave seemed hellbent on resisting and ultimately made a spectacle of herself. From the corner of her eye, Inari could see something about this slave that utterly fascinated Fiora.

Hmm...maybe she really is seeking more than just a simple nanny?
Certainly, such a rebellious slave could pose problems in the Radacke household, but Fi was good at evading most of Bice's wrath. Maybe such a strong personality wouldn't be so bad; it might even lend Fi some extra courage herself, seeing as how this slave looked fierce enough to take on anyone, Radacke or no Radacke.

"Say Fi, what do you think about that wild one? I know she might be a bit rough for the children but..."

Inari trailed off as she looked at her friend, trying to gauge what the Benshiran truly felt of the idea.

Postby Fiora Radacke on September 23rd, 2013, 12:19 am

Fiora

"She's...just...perfect," Fiora answered, her eyes not straying from the audacious slave who would dare to insult an audience of Dynasties. The more Fiora watched her, the more she decided she had to have her. This gutsy woman would protect her children, she was sure, but she would also teach them to stand up for themselves, something that was just as important, and something that Fiora herself was not doing a very good job at. Besides, she had never seen a female person exude so much confidence, let alone a slave. Even Inari, as lively and even rebellious as she could sometimes be, was still at the mercy of her upbringing and her gender and so paled in comparison to the feisty woman on the dais.

Fiora was so mesmerized by the tall slave that she hadn't realized the auction had started quite a few chimes ago. Two slaves had already been bought and a third was led forward. The auctioneer, a Sitai, Fiora remembered, opened his mouth and blared out his words over the crowd.

"Jovi here is young, spry, and robust! He'd make an excellent errand runner or field hand and he's available for the first time after his many successes in the Breaking Grounds!" Shuddering at the thought, Fiora tried to tune the man out as he rambled on so she turned to her friend.

"Ari," she whispered in the girl's ear. "That wild looking woman, I have to have her. She's just what I was looking for." That last wasn't entirely true, but as soon as she had seen the slave, the Benshira knew that was exactly the one she wanted.

The rude couple that was sitting ahead of them were bidding on the current slave, upping their numbers back and forth between two other bidders. They conferenced with each other as the price for him climbed and finally decided it was too much. The woman looked rather cross about losing him, and Fiora had to wonder whether she had actually wanted the young man to work in her fields or run her errands or something more. Rumors of that sort were always running amok in Kenash.

"Going once, going twice..." the auctioneer was booming. "SOLD!" He prodded the 'robust and spry' slave back in the sold line and Fiora pressed the balls of her feet into the floor as the defiant female slave was brought forward. Before the Sitai could say anything, Fiora had sprung up from her seat.

"400!" she called.

Quinn couldn't help but chuckle at the display the young women provided for the crowd. Not exactly a show stopper performance, but the response she gave in reply to the crowds jeers reminded Quinn of himself. The final act of defiance as it were. Good for her, he thought to himself. When she was moved into position, he was about to raise his hand and throw out a bid, when to his surprise he was beaten to the punch by a loud initial bid from behind him.

His head darted backward to see who the competition was. Again, much to his surprise, it was one of the fancy ladies behind him. The one covered in a shaw. He gave her a playful smirk before turning back around to the auctioneer. The man himself looked a little surprised at the bid, which had come before he even began to speak.

"Ah...well it looks like we already have a bid for this next fine specimen you see before you. Can we get a raise on that bid? Say to 450 mizas?"

Using this chance, Quinn quickly threw up his hand to cut anyone else off. "500 mizas!" Turning back toward Fiora with a smirk he winked before turning back around to the events at hand. Hopefully the woman would understand he meant business and back down. If not he still had a trick up his sleeve to best the woman. Hopefully she wasn't as stubborn as he...or this slave was. Otherwise this could turn interesting very quickly.

Postby Fiora Radacke on September 24th, 2013, 2:19 am

Fiora

Glaring at the broad-shouldered man in front of her who had just outbid her, Fiora clenched her fists at her sides. She glanced down at Inari, who was still sitting in the seat and seemed to gain some confidence from her friend.

"550!" she yelled, again before the auctioneer could say anything. The freeborn countered with 600 and Fiora's brow furrowed even lower. Handsome or no, she was not going to let him take that fierce woman, for she was quite sure why he wanted her in the first place. No, the defiant slave was hers, even if she had to borrow every last miza the Radackes had in order to fulfill the purchase.

Then, Fiora began to think about how the female slave would fit in at Whiplash. Knowing very little about her, but watching her display mere chimes before, Fiora was certain that she would butt heads with Bice, if not all of the men in the family. Whiplash might be a very dangerous place for her indeed and the last thing the Benshira wanted was to put anyone in danger. But something told Fiora that the slave might actually enjoy toying with Bice and the man was so unintelligent he probably would not understand when he was being defied.

She was just so proud, especially for a slave, and Fiora desperately needed a change in her routine. Plus, her children were also suffering from the day to day monotony and this woman would most likely shake things up.

Thus, she shouted, "650 gold mizas!"

Woah, hold up. People actually wanted to buy her? The slave's mind was in a whirl. The slaver and one of the Dynasty women, shouting numbers back and forth at each other and the auctioneer. She looked between them, first at the slaver, then the woman, back to the slaver and repeat. At first a frown made itself known, then a tricky grin lit her face in a queer, giddy way.

"Now now, kiddies. No need to fall over each other tryin' ta buy me."

It was amusing, really, watching them try to out-bid the other. Petch, the auctioneer hadn't even called out a number or even her perks (if she had any) before the Dynasty woman had sprung to her feet and screamed her price. Mal's nails made a distinct scratching noise to the nearest slave as she scrubbed at the side of her thigh. The smile had grown, looking as if she might split her face from ear to ear.

Honestly, why were they so eager this time around? It was unusual. Was there some new drug or tobacco that made people have a few loose screws? Good grief. And a Dynasty member, especially a woman... That was definitely strange. The lioness took another look at the dark-skinned bidder. She didn't look to be part of any family in particular... Probably married into it. That was common, as far as Mal knew. Which wasn't very much. Just gossip...

Right, left, right left. Inari sat, helplessly captivated, as she watched the rapid rise of bids climb higher and higher. She was starting to question if maybe Fi had eaten something funny or was coming down with the flu. Why else would she be so feverishly hellbent on acquiring such a cocky, defiant slave? Surely, the poor woman would be beaten within an inch of life as soon as she so much as looked at Bice with that piercing, haughty gaze of hers.

Inari took a moment to tear her eyes away from the two bidders, whom she was beginning to think had lost their minds. And so, she realized, had the slave, apparently.

Up on the stage, the woman was grinning madly, making all the slaves around her doubly nervous and jittery. There was no mistaking the predatory, feral air that clung about this one; she was no ordinary human, that much was for sure. And gods, what was she even doing up there? Was she...scratching herself?

The Lorak was just about to grab at her friend's sleeve and ask what the petch had gotten into her, when Fi suddenly blurted, "650 gold mizas!"

Inari's jaw dropped, and her protests died in her throat.

[Kenash Auction House] A New Nanny

Postby Sypha Kai on September 25th, 2013, 5:55 pm

-After another scanning sweep over the multitude of sweaty Human buyers, Sypha's
dark eyes drifted back to those he was here to protect. His attention of course was drawn
to the two trading numerical shouts in the direction of the blank faced Auctioneer. The
hired guardian offered the bow weilding slaver a few more seconds of consideration,
noticing that the man wasn't willing to let this slave go easy. It was always a possibility
to have a losing bidder draw weapon upon the victor, but it wasn't a common site for the
cost of the foolish action was time spent in a dirty cell, if not death. It wouldn't be a good
situation for anyone to pull that kind of stunt on these Dynasty women, not while the
Mercenary was there.

-The slightest of shifts was given and his brown voids came upon Fiora's pleasant visage,
watching her excitement as she raised the price to six hundred and fifty golden mizas.
There was something about her, those eyes, the color of a cloudless sky, that he couldn't
piece together. It wasn't just the color of her delicate stare, but the hues and shades of her
well kept skin and hair. What was it that had his mind searching so desperately for an
answer? It was strange how the mechanics of life worked around you, not needing you to
understand their purpose to function. The answer would reveal itself when it was ready.

-Inari, a strange flower within the Lorak family, was captured last by his examing gaze.
So free spirited and built with emotion, why just look at the slack jawed expression she
wore now on that alluring semblance. Below her widening pair of midnight eyes were
her lightly colored lips, which formed an "O" after her close friend's last bid. Sypha's
amusement was not evident, for most of his expressions were masked behind a deep
shade of scarlet. She was an important piece to his agenda, this Inari of the Lorak
Dynasty.
