A Barbaric Meeting

A dozen miles from the Village of the Shining Scales / midnight / Fall 45th 494 AV

Another dark night in the jungle of Falyndar, where Leth's glow barely peeked through the trees in some places, leaving the ground below in complete darkness. But for the areas that it did touch, there was a thin fog creeping across the land and rising just enough to touch the base of the trees and surrounding undergrowth. It seemed a picky night for one to be out unprepared, but in the harsh jungles no one was ever completely safe.

In the dead of night a lone man wandered aimlessly through the jungle. A long sword in one hand and a plated shield on the other arm. The man's staggered movements and pants of breath showing just how tired he was. The man's name was Jacob, a native from across the seas of Sylira. A barbarian. He was a sailor, a swordsman, a brawler, and a trader as well. He had journeyed across the sea with a crew aboard a ship that had stopped in Falyndar to trade with the savages of which they heard had hard to find exotic items.

Many people wouldn't risk the journey, but Jacob, along with the others were out to make a name for themselves and firmly believed that if they could acquire these rare items, they could sell them back in Sylira for as much as they wanted. However, like the rumors said, the Myrians were odd, hard to understand, violent and above all untrustworthy. They learned the hard way, as a deal when sour and the Myrians attacked. Jacob was one of the few that escaped, but easily lost his way in a jungle he knew nothing about.

But the barbarian wasn't the only person out on this night. The trickster, Mamoru was also out and wandering the lands. The young Dhani didn't have a destination in mind, and in truth he didn't know where he was going. It was simply a dare, a dare made by one young Dhani to the other. Walk the lands of the jungle far and wide, and allow your feet to take you until fear stops you in your tracks. That was the bet they made, and Mamoru excepted gladly. The trickster wanted to prove himself, and he would do so again and again and as much as was needed.

He was in the smaller sizes with his race, and that alone lessened his worth in the eyes of many. There was also the fact that until recently, Mamoru hadn't taken a single thing serious, and it wasn't until Morgana sung her claws into him that he did straighten up and act right...some. It started out as two, the other Dhani had long since fled back to the nest to escape his fear. However, Mamoru didn't know this or he might had headed back himself, but it had been agreed that they would take different paths just to make it more scary.

And so the Dhani continued on his way, moving through the jungle to face the fear of the unknown and of the uncertain.

A Barbaric Meeting

Jacob's dark eyes darted back and forth as he looked around him. Sweat and drying blood dotted his flesh as well as dirt and bit of leaves on his clothing and in his hair. The man was lost, and had wandered in so many directions that he couldn't remember which way he had come before. Fatigue had set in and his weapons became heavier and more of a burden and lost the comfort that it was made to give.

The lost traveler spun around left and right, cursing himself and preying to his gods to show him the way, and for the strength to survive long enough to find his way back to his ship. But it was harsh jungle, and the trees had a way of all looking the same which was very confusing for those that weren't used to the jungle. Jacob reached into his pocket and pulled out a water skin, but was pissed to learn that he had already drained it fully.

He sighed loudly as he dropped it on the ground and settled against the trunk of a tree. It seemed hopeless and he was tired. The man needed sleep, water and food, but he didn't know how to hunt, couldn't find a water source and was too afraid to close his eyes and rest. It would be a long night at this rate, but he promised himself that if he could make it through, he'd find water and food in the morning and then make his way back to his ship. It was a good plan, and the last thoughts that went through his mind before he passed out.

Mamoru wasn't afraid, but the young Dhani was very wary of his surroundings. He too heard every snap of twigs, every rustle in the undergrowth, and even the noises high in the trees above that seem to shift just as he stepped beneath them. Was he being followed, Dhani, Myrians out to kill him? The mind was easy to fool especially when it was given reason to believe what it already thought possible.

Well, thisss hass turned out to be boring after all. I wonder how far Rasshure got before he turned tail and ran back to hiss mommy?

A Barbaric Meeting

Jacob only slept for a short time, mere chimes before he would awake with a start. But during his sleep, the man did dream. It was a memory from his past. Of days long gone that he had experienced back when he was in Sylira. It was a vivid dream, one comprised of sights, sounds, and even smells and touch. He dreamed of summer, and the time he had spent with his family long ago. It wasn't a reoccurring dream, but the memory did bring him comfort from the reality that he was about to wake to.

"Hah!"

The man jumped in place, hands gripping the handle of his weapon to make sure that it was still with him. He blinked quickly, and looked around to see if he were still alone. The jungle looked as it had before, dark and nothing but trees and vines to keep him company. Jacob sighed in relief then and sat back against the tree while he collected his thought. He hadn't noticed the small lump beside two of the thinner trees across from him to his right.

Mamoru had arrived only a few ticks before the man would awake. At first the young Dhani had thought the man dead until he went to investigate. The trickster had gotten so close, so very close to the man that they shared the same breath of air. He was curious about this stranger, and even from a far he looked completely different than any Myrian he'd ever seen. There was also a foreign smell about the man, something else mixed in with sea water and some type of burned plant.

While most Dhani would have transformed, wrapped themselves around him and crushed him while he slept, Mamoru's playful and inquisitiveness ways kept his hunger at bay, for now. He moved away from the man and settled in across from him where he could watch and see what he would do. Even though he didn't look Myrian, he could be one or some sort of trap to lure unsuspecting Dhani in by those twisted monkeys.

The trickster watched in silence as the man slowly stood up and stumbled a step before leaning back against the tree again. His earlier examination had been quick, but he could see now that the man was hurt, and he wondered if he had been tangling with the super powered Myrians. Mamoru was making a guess here, but the man didn't seem like he was with them, although he had no way of telling. But for the trickster, the game had begun.

"What kind of being walksss the jungle alone and ssleepss under treesss unguarded?"

A Barbaric Meeting

Jacob almost yelled as he spun around, swinging his blade outward to protect himself. He didn't see anyone, no sighs of the tattooed clans that had destroyed his comrades. But then there was a subtle movement near by, and the wounded warrior caught sight of a greenish glint of light flickering off of two tiny areas surrounded by shadows. Jacob turned slightly, adjusting his arm to point his blade towards the figure that he could just barely make out.

"Back off or I'll cut you down from where you sit! You hear me, you stupid jungle mut!"

Slowly Mamoru rose to his feet, his height somewhat a surprise to the man being that they were almost eye level. He stepped forward slowly, one foot applied after the other and the rest of him followed. In the pale light that managed to seep through the thick jungle above, he could better see the trickster's features. He looked young, long hair and pale skin, and the man wasn't completely sure of gender.

Mamoru looked the man over, no sense of malice, or threat in his words, eyes, or demeanor. He simply stood there observing the human as he had since he first found him asleep. It was interesting to see Jacob's reactions, if not for this situation he might have thought him as crazy as a Myrian. The type to chop first then ask questions to the meat as he scarfed it down. But this man showed a civil mind and a regard for his own being which was rare to find in the jungle.

"You don't look like a Myrian, no? Why are you here? Why...sso alone?" he said in common.

Jacob hissed at the name and narrowed his eyes in hate. One look into the stranger's eyes and Mamoru could tell just how he felt about the monkeys. "Myrians? Myrians? Those, apes murdered by comrades, stole our goods and tried to kill me! I'll get them, I'll burn their stupid village to the ground!" His words were strong, powerful and Mamoru was already starting to like him. Jacob waved his weapon at the young Dhani hoping for him to move on. "You just get out of here and leave me be, and I won't have to strike you down."

Mamoru didn't smile exactly, a twitch in his features as his eyes widen and lips spread, being tugged at the corners as he spoke again in the common tongue. "You can't do it. Not with an army could you kill them all. Their numbersss, fair too great, their power too sstrong.."

"Not one will ever..."

"No....never."

Jacob almost throw his weapon at the snake for his dark prediction. But he believed him, the young male surely looked at home in the jungle and he was in far better shape than he was. Besides he had seen their numbers for himself and could only guess there were many more in the jungle just waiting to kill more because they could.

Jacob sighed, his shoulders drooping as he lowered his weapon. His best bet was to leave, get as far away as he could. Any ideas of revenge had been shortly destroyed by the stranger in black, but Jacob wasn't the type to give up.

"Water, I need-I need water. Is there a river of some sort near by? Somewhere I can get a drink and clean these wounds?"

He had no idea what to exact, if he even got an answer at all, but since the boy had stopped long enough to tell him that he was going to die, he figured he'd at least ask. Mamoru smiled thin, a somewhat innocent look as if he didn't have an evil thought in his heart. In truth the trickster was already thinking of what he could take from this meeting, besides a meal.

Lifting his head slightly, Mamoru took in the air and exposed his tongue to taste it. He stood there for a moment, unmoving, head tilted back and mouth opened. It was a weird sight to see, but the human had asked him for help and this was how he did it. Slipping his tongue back into his mouth, he lowered his gaze to the man, while still keeping his head tiled upward.

"The air here isss fressher. There mussst be a water sssource closse by. Come.."
