35 Fall, 513AV
The last braiding that he had done was to cover an object and from that he had learnt a good number of lessons. To be somewhat perverse however instead of consolidating that with repeating the exercise to see how well he could correct the errors he had made, he decided to do something different. It was, he knew, an old problem of his, the inability to stick to something so that he mastered it. It was one of the things that frustrated his mother, but Fallan had ever been one to flit from one thing to another, dabbling in each but losing interest before he managed to actually achieve very much.
Once again this was to be a practice run, for he had nothing in mind to make, and even if he had then he needed the practice in order to get his hand in. Certainly the last time his major problem had been with tension of the strands. This time he hoped that it would be less of a problem, though not so much because he would be better as much as there was no central core which would show off each and every mistake.
He intended to do another six strand braid, that much at least was going to remain the same as the braid itself would be familiar. Of course not having a core meant nothing to tie the ends to and so a different solution was needed. It was part of the reason why he had chosen this design for this occasion, for the additional challenge, but also it could be adapted to be done on the same core he had before, but this time without the need for the top tie and perhaps even the top decorative knot as there was nothing to hide. As he considered that, the strands in his hands he realised that there might need to be some changes, perhaps in rounding out the top of the core, difficult with bone which had a thin outer layer, or perhaps the knot would be useful in any case.
There was an additional design change which factored in the issue with nothing to tie the ends to and the reason why he was this time only using three strands. Carefully he folded them in half to find the middle point and then wove them together with a simple braid at around the middle of each. This now gave the means for there now to be six strands, three from each end and as a bonus when the braided section was folded over so that all six strands were ready to start braiding it would create a hook from which the finished item could be hung.
Somehow it all seemed too easy, but then most of the more difficult challenges he had already overcome on his first practice run, so now he would simply face the challenge which had caused him the most problem on his first attempt which was getting the tension right. The new hook would allow him to hang the work from as he worked which would allow tension to be made, but if he got it consistently wrong then the finished braid would hang crookedly.
