Latch, before anything else, appears unremarkable. Handsome, but not strikingly so. A familiar face, yet not one that easily stands out. Not short but not tall and neither too thin nor too large. Fate has forged him into just another face the crowd. Brown hair pulled backward into neat ponytail and with cool chocolate brown eyes, there is no question that Latch was born with common blood coursing through his veins.

  • Hair: Brown
  • Eyes: Brown
  • Height: 5'9
  • Weight: 160 lbs
  • Physical Build: Thin framed

Concept
Mystery and discovery. These are two words that shape the fire that fuels Latch to be a man greater than his upbringing. Were he born into different circumstances, he might've scholar of great renown or a wizard of impressive skill. However, being a foundling deposited on the doorstep of a family that was not his own and forced to live as a stranger and a servant to them cut any thread that would lead him to greatness. Normalcy seems intent to infect his life, but Latch looks to use it to his advantage.

Perhaps it was being born into such strange circumstances that molded his mind into the magnet for mystery that it is. Put plainly, Latch cannot leave a problem unsolved. He's drawn to the patterns and the puzzles, and his natural curiosity pushes him to investigate such solutions. At times, it can become almost an obsession for him. When Latch sees an issue or unknown, he simply cannot leave well enough alone.

A pragmatic and patient sort, Latch is willing to wait for the most opportune moment before acting. This can lead to inaction, but he is a firm believer in letting cooler heads prevail and is rarely moved to passionate action. Still, that fire for greatness burns in Latch's belly, and if he believes that taking that action will lead to some great good for him or others, he might be willing to through caution to the wind and just go for it.

  • Merits: Dedicated, Analytical, Patient, Pragmatic
  • Flaws: Quiet, Headstrong, Wrathful, Manipulative

History
Alone. The first feeling of a small, newborn babe who wailed against the stormy night above him. Afraid He cried for the missing warmth of his mother, the absent presence of his father, and the unknown feelings that held his unnamed form rapt. Abandoned.

Latch is a foundling, a child either lost or left at birth and raised by a family that is not their own. Such was the circumstance that befell both him and his foster family on the 20th of Winter, 494 A.V. Abandoned on an unknown doorstep with naught but a brass key to his name, Latch was raised as a servant to the Languis family. A well off family of Freeborn silversmiths who played at being a Dynasty household, the Languis' took care of and took pity upon Latch, but never truly him treated as family. He was never allowed to play with the other children nor was he taught the family's trade, but was instead instructed to be quiet, speak only when spoken to, and do his up-most best to serve the Languis' until a time where he could be on his own. The other children joked and japed at how effectively the foundling followed his orders, oftentimes claiming that the key he wore around his neck, the key that was placed on him the night he was discovered, was the only thing that could open the 'latch' that had become his mouth. This joke quickly developed into a nickname which soon replaced the actual name his foster family had given to him, and so Latch became the only name the boy knew.

As he grew, it became apparent to Latch that his adoption was more of a social endeavor to the Languis' than a moral one. When his foster family would have guests over, they would bask in the praise given to them for their kindness at accepting the quiet, abandoned boy. Latch became at eavesdropping and moving through the quiet corners of his house. It was almost like a game to him, hiding away and listening in on what his Languis' truly thought of the house-guests they entertained or even the other family members. He discovered a talent at his late-night arts, even becoming skilled at lifting letters from his foster father's pocket and reading them before he realized they were gone. With quick fingers and a quiet smile, Latch spent much of his childhood ferreting out secrets from his family members; developing criminal talents without even committing a crime.

When time came for his apprenticeship, Latch found himself excited to escape the confines of that uncaring household. The Languis' had placed him under the care of a Locksmith, sending him on his way with barely a goodbye. He spent years learning the tricks of his assigned trade, picking up more than just locksmithing but also Fravata and a bit of Nari from trading his master's wares, and rare would it be to find a person more suited for his trade than Latch for the art of lock making. Every lock, every tumbler and tick that barred his success, became a sort challenge to Latch. A puzzle yet to be solved. Admittedly, Latch enjoyed the picking and breaking of locks than the planning and building of them. Something about the sudden 'click' of success when a lock was broken called to him. Regardless, Latch enjoyed learning the ins and outs of locks and found himself adept and content in his work.

As he approaches the end of his apprenticeship, Latch wonders if this is to be his lot in life. To live as a locksmith. Just a simple, ordinary, locksmith. He supposes he should be content with what he has done. What he will do. After all, living an average life is still living isn't it?

And then he looks down at the key he still wears around his neck, the only clue he has to what his life should've been, and something whispers to him that he's meant for so much more.

  • 24 years, or 96 seasons if you want to pedantic.

  • Getting a bit personal now aren't we? If we're being a honest, I have fondness for my nose.
4. How physically fit are you?
  • The only part of my body that is fit are my fingers. Long hours making and breaking locks will do that to you.
5. How do you typically dress and what is your style?
  • I dress practically, which is just another way of saying that I'm too poor to wear anything else.

Family :
1. Who are your parents and what are they like?
  • I...wouldn't know. Most likely forgetful, given my status as a foundling. Not that I hold a grudge or anything.
2. Do you have any brothers or sisters?
  • Only foster-siblings, and we're not particularly close.
3. What is your extended family like?
  • None to speak of unfortunately. My foster family's were a bunch of ponces though.

  • Close friends are the only real family I have, so I suppose that answers that doesn't it?
5. Do you treat animals like family?

  • Kenash, that city upon a sinking, stinking swamp. No place like it. Not that I would know really, I've been to no place besides it.

  • Kenash. I may not be a slave, but seems like I'm still bound to this place for the time being.

  • Syliras. From what I've heard, everything works so well together there. All the tumblers locking into perfect positions, it sounds ideal.

  • The Glass Beach at night is undeniably beautiful. I've only ever had good memories there.
