The Hollow of Odraz ![]() There exists in Nyka's Celestial Quarter a ladder, made of wrought iron bands and oaken rungs well-worn with use. It leads down the face of the Aperture to a circular doorway chiseled into the stone and covered in strange runes from a long-forgotten era. It sits just high enough for Syna's light to touch it when she hangs highest, and a great disk of rock acts as a door. Through the gate is a claustrophobic chamber in the shape of a three-sided pyramid with curved edges and unnaturally smooth walls. One enters through one of the points, and as such the incline of the floor allows one to always find the exit. Once one enters the hollow, a touch on the disk will cause it to roll over the doorway, sealing the chamber off and plunging it into total darkness and silence. After eleven minutes have passed, however, apparitions will begin to appear. The walls of the chamber turn to the landscape of one's mind; sometimes the past, sometimes the present, and sometimes a construct of the subconscious. Figures familiar and strange coalesce in front of one's eyes, and voices echo through the impossible space. The hollow is a reflection of the self, and it has been used in Nyka's history as an instrument of meditation, a way to view one's psyche from the outside, and a formidable mental trial. The hollow's strange world becomes more pronounced and intense the longer one stays inside, and while small, half or whole bell stints are quite common for pilgrims and spiritually minded Nykans, those wishing to test their fortitude often stay inside for a day or more. One can exit the hollow by simply climbing up the pyramid's slope and touching the door. Most who try to challenge themselves leave sooner rather than later. |
