Timestamp: 1st of Winter 513 AV Faryon pulled her cloak closer to her. Morwen was afoot and was definitely letting Mizahar know. No snow has graced Riverfall yet but to Faryon it felt it could at any moment. She hurried along with a small basket in tow, her intentions were to gather a few of the herbs and its seeds before the winter frost settled in and probably kill most of them. Even with a tarp over them, once the snow really started falling it would crush them. A single snowflake might not weigh much but get a giant pile of it in one place, it was pretty heavy. The teen arrived at the herb garden first and got to work immediately. Alot of the herbs had very few flowers left on them. Faryon was unsure if she would be able to harvest any of the seeds until she got to them and had a chance to look them over. Worse case scenario, the Drykas could always make a trip to Riverfall come spring and purchase some new potted ones or seeds. Besides she had been thinking of growing some of those trumpet flowers she had seen in Knirin Gardens last season. The first few herb bunches were Basil. This herb was easy to harvest but downside was that harvesting the leaves often (as you should) prevents it from flowering. So none of the Basil had any of the beautiful white teacup shaped flowers. Normally it would be a full bushy plant with yellow green leaves or even dark emerald color ones. However right now they were a scraggly bunch of leaves. Basil's leaves grow in a set of two with each leaf facing each other, then another set of tiny leaves grow on top of them, at that spot Faryon pinched the stem and gave a slight twist and easy enough the Basil is harvested. The Drykas picked through the bushes only selecting the ones that were still a deep green color. There wasn't much left to the Basil bunches by now but the teen managed to get a handful worth of the lemony smelling herb. It seemed Anise was the next row, the strong fragrance it released was Faryon's only clue to the identification of the annual. Unlike the Basil, it was fairing much better, for now at least. Once the frost fully set in, the Anise's root would die. The almost two feet stalks weren't full of their usual small yellow flowers but still had a few green pods that didn't bloom. Even though they didn't bloom in the summer they still could be harvested and dried then the seeds would practically fall out. Her mother said the seeds could be crushed for their oil and were excellent flavor additions for medicines that just tasted like shyke, incidentally make very yummy cookies too apparently. Maybe if there was was a good yield from these pods, Vanator or his fiancé, Sybel could experiment with the seeds in their brewery to make a spirit or something. Faryon began clipping the little pods off and adding them one at a time to the basket. The air quickly became filled with a sweet licorice like smell that after awhile was a bit too much for the Drykas and started making her sneeze some. She wanted to harvest a few of the leaves too, of which could be used for a salad or the sorts. It looked like the odd, long, shallowly lobed leaves had been mostly eaten though by some creepy crawly. Mental list: look into how to make some Mugwort Oil The leaves closer to the top were fuzzy to the touch and Faryon didnt think anybody would want fuzzy leaves in their mouth so instead of gathering them for foodwise maybe she could make a potpourri out them. |
