Vann

Theme Song :

Race: Mixed Blood (Human: Svefra [Father] + Eypharian [Mother])
Gender: Male
Age: 19
Birthday: 46, Autumn, 494 AV
Birthplace: Syliras

ImageAppearance: Vann has short, dark hair and stands slightly taller than average. His face is framed by sideburns and is perpetually covered in stubble. His eyes, a gift from his mother, boast bright, golden irises; they are the only visible indicator that Vann is not quite human. Beyond that, his face is quite plain by most standards. Neither muscular nor scrawny, Vann sits somewhere in the middle; he is well toned and physically active by necessity.

Sunberth is a city where trouble could strike at any moment. It pays to be prepared and Vann's attire is testimony to the fact. Starting from the bottom, Vann wears black, leather high-boots with silver buckles. Tucked into those boots are charcoal trousers which he fastens around his waist with a black, leather belt; the belt is adorned with a silver buckle. Vann wears three layers on his torso. Tucked into his trousers is a black shirt over which he wears a black, leather vest fastened together with silver buckles; additionally, above the vest Vann boasts a black, leather jacket.

Vann wears a wide-brimmed hat on top of his head. The hat is black leather and one of Vann's most prized possessions; he considers it his calling card. Strapped to the left of his waist is a sturdy quiver in which ten crossbow bolts reside. The bolts pair nicely with the hand-sized crossbow hanging from his belt on the right-hand side. All in all the outfit Vann wears makes him look rather dangerous which, in a city like Sunberth, is generally the desired effect.

Character Concept

"I watch, I listen, and I learn. People pay me to talk... they also pay me to shut up."

There are two things Vann loves; a grand adventure and a grander story. After all, the best way to learn about a story is to be a part of it. All stories possess a grain of truth and truth is a valuable commodity... to a particular type of client. All men have a trade and Vann's trade is information.

"I'll buy you a drink! The stuff here tastes like horse piss but it gets the job done."

Vann is quite a personable fellow; people tend to loosen their tongues easier around somebody they like. He holds no prejudices towards people based upon their appearance or race; such things are beneath him. Instead, he'll judge a person by their actions... though there isn't much that Vann disapproves of; not really. A blacksmith or slaver, a sailor or mage, a story's a story as far as Vann is concerned. His line of work isn't exactly honest, so who is he to judge?

There is, however, one exception to this rule. Ironically, despite being okay with the concept of slavery, Vann despises large, organised groups of authority. A rebel at heart, Vann dislikes being told what to do by someone who assumes an entitled position of command over him. There is a huge distinction between asking for help, paying for help and demanding help as far as Vann is concerned; so long as you don't fall into the latter, Vann will likely hear you out with smile on his face. That being said, if Vann has his way, asking for help will always become paying for help by the end of the conversation.

Vann possesses a large amount of confidence because he goes out of his way to know things. Knowing about something means it can't take you by surprise. A weakness of Vann's is that he will become comparatively more flustered than the average person when forced outside of his comfort zone, but he is quick to rally after the surprise wears off.

"I understand you're upset, but you need to ask yourself something: Is this worth it?"

Despite his friendly disposition, Vann is no fool and he does not respond well to threats. If he feels a fight is imminent, he will always try to take the first move; either to land a good punch or make a tactical retreat. If possible, he will remove his hat before a brawl; he'd hate for it to get damaged. His sharp wit is often a double-edged sword in that sometimes people get mad and try to cut him with their swords.

Character History

Vann was born in the citadel-city of Syliras to a Svefra father and Eypharian mother. Their bond was unusual, though not unheard of. They sought refuge in Syliras as the knights who ran the city were accepting of almost anyone despite their situations; so long as they pulled their weight. Vann's father was named Jack and he was a Svefra merchant. He opened a general goods store in the citadel and ran it for the city; handing the majority of his profits over to the knights. The man was charismatic, funny and got along well with most people. His mother's name was Taskah and, in contrast to her husband, she was aloof, quiet and somewhat of an introvert. Vann never understood what brought his parents together; but then again, love doesn't have to make sense.

As a child, Vann's mother would take him outside of the citadel at least once a week. She was determined to give her child fresh air whenever she could. The young Vann often asked her why they stayed to which Taskah would always give the same reply; because it was safe. It was around this time that Vann's perspective slowly began to change. He began to pay attention to what people said, what they actually said, about Syliras. The knights, a symbol of protection, began to appear as glorified dictators and fear mongers. Syliras itself? Vann quickly came to the conclusion that this city was not a citadel at all... it was a prison. It was upon coming to this revelation that a seed of rebellion was planted in Vann's heart.

The Djed storm of 512 AV was a turning point in Vann's life. Syliras weathered the storm better than most, which in itself was a blessing. That being said, the catastrophe made Vann realise that life was too short. He left Syliras, the only form of rebellion open to him that wouldn't end with a knight running a sword through his chest; their hold on the city was far too strong for anything else. The lad wanted adventure, to find the truth of things, to be part of a story worth telling. His wandering eventually landed him in Sunberth, the proverbial toilet of Sylira. The place was the polar opposite of Syliras and Vann fell in love; in a place like Sunberth, anything could happen.

Language
Fluent Language: Common
Vann grew up in Syliras so of course Common is his most fluent language.

Basic Language: Fratava
Vann's father was a Svefra merchant; he frequently used the language in business deals and Vann learnt his fair share of it.

Poor Language: Arumenic
Vann's mother would speak her native language from time to time; Vann was able to learn the odd spattering of words.

Religion
Qalaya: As a fellow storyteller, Qalaya is a deity Vann will pray to. Vann takes comfort in the knowledge that a goddess exists who probably likes a good story as much as he does. His worship is neither flashy nor extensive, but it is genuine.

Ovek: While not a gambler in the traditional sense, Vann believes one can never have too much luck. To spend an evening wandering the streets as opposed to lurking in a tavern is a gamble; what if he misses out on a good story? Vann wears a charm around his neck depicting the six-fingered hand of Ovek and will offer a simple thanks in his mind whenever he feels he has been particularly lucky for whatever reason.

Akajia: Secrets make the best stories and Vann is always trying to weed them out. Secrets are the domain of Akajia and as such the goddess is worshipped by Vann.

Housing
Location: Sunberth

The Drunken Fish: The tavern is nothing special, but Vann calls it home. The taproom sees a lot of traffic as far as those things go, making it a great place to meet people, have a drink, and listen in on conversations.
