Standing at five foot, eleven inches and weighing a total of one hundred and fifth pounds, Jay Ackina’s wiry frame gives him an edge when it comes to agility. What he lacks in physical strength, he makes up in speed and dexterity. His ear length brown hair can frequently be seen pushed to the side of his face, out of the way of his equally brown eyes. A welcoming smile is quick to appear across his clean shaven jaw, revealing straight white teeth usually accompanied by a hearty laugh. His friendly demeanor is portrayed upon his animated face which some say they can read like an open book.

Character Concept

“Love and compassion are necessities, not luxuries.
Without them humanity cannot survive.”

In a world of luxury and extravagance, Jay strove to live by those words, something many of the other landowners in Kenash did not feel the same way about. The irony of the declaration did not escape him. He knew that love and compassion were quickly trampled upon by the wealthy as affluence twisted people’s perspective on the value of life. Jay continually saw the rich lose themselves to greed and power. When those two qualities consumed their minds, the first thing to be discarded was their respect for lesser beings.

That went against who Jay was at his core. Respect. Honor. Compassion. Those were a few words that revealed the kind of man Jay was. He was the type of person to put others ahead of himself, regardless of their station. Wealthy, slave or free, the young Ackina understood that beneath the labels and titles, people had the same base humanity. They all desired the same thing: to be treated as an equal. Respect built trust and a willingness to serve. Kindness drove him to treat people in such a way. He hoped that by showing the slaves that he cared for them as people and not as objects, they would be more willing to listen to his authority. Though it was harder said than done since they were still slaves, under his authority as a Dynasty member.

But those qualities were not to be mistaken for weaknesses.

Jay considered himself to be a man of action.

When decisions had to be made he was not afraid to stand by his convictions. He was passionate about what he believed to be right. It spurred onvhis actions. But those convictions did not mean he was a rigid person. Rather, a cheerful smile was quick to grace his features to any who looked his way, his easy going demeanor and personable attitude attracting people to him. While his strengths complimented his character, his weaknesses did its best to destroy its counterpart.

Jay’s beliefs may have been set in his mind but it did nothing to help him vocalizing them. Fear kept him from speaking out what he was passionate about. Fear kept his tongue from speaking the fervor that burned in his heart. With every injury inflicted, whether slave or free, it was as though phantom pain shot through his body. With every harsh word spoken, it was as if he was given the verbal lashing instead. He knew his views of mercy and kindness paving the way to a different future would be opposed by the majority of Kenash. If only he had the courage to speak those thoughts aloud. But fear had its claws wrapped around his tongue. The Dynasty families were quick to scoff at the idea of a slave’s opinion being worth anything. But Jay knew that to be wrong and one day hoped to prove to them his way would work.

Character History

In the year 497 AV, the Ackina Dynasty of the Clawtone Plantation came into the possession of a slave. Unbeknownst to the former mercenary, Bael soon found himself taken and sold into slavery having, “overstayed his welcome.” On the day of the auction, Morrison, Head of the Clawtone House, discovered Bael and learned of his skill set. After a long and vicious battle, Morrison won and purchased the man. The Ackina triumphantly took his newly acquired slave back to the Estate.

For years, the Head of the House knew the family needed someone to retrieve runaway slaves without spending money on a Bounty Hunter every time a slave decided they had enough of their occupation and attempted to flee. Morrison wanted to train someone with the skills necessary to perform the task from inside the Dynasty family. It would also allow for income to flow from outside the family for other Dynasty members to take advantage of. With the arrival of their new slave, a plan began to formulate in Morrison’s mind. One year after Bael had resigned himself to his fate, Morrison introduced the former mercenary to an eight year old Jay Ackina.

For the next sixteen years, Bael taught Jay the ways of combat. The mercenary trained the boy in the use of a long sword, hand to hand combat and how to extract information out from a person without the individual realizing they had given it. But Bael was more than just an instructor.

He had become Jay’s mentor.

While Morrison may have only intended for Bael to teach Jay worldly lessons of the physical nature, the sword for hire had a major impact on the boy. Bael, having proven himself to be a trustworthy and reliable slave, soon gained the trust of his masters. A few years after the boy’s initial training, the former mercenary became Jay’s bodyguard and companion. The impressionable youth absorbed everything the thirty-four year old man said and did. The older man slowly imparted words of insight into the Ackina and when he deemed it safe, shared the perspective of an outsider on the lifestyle and ways of the Kenash people.

As Jay grew from a child into a man, Bael took every opportunity to instill wisdom and understanding into his pupil. The boy was receptive to the surprisingly noble thoughts of the allegedly violent mercenary. Bael taught Jay that all humans were equal. Titles and ranks did not change how one should treat another human being. They were all valuable, important and should be treated as such. He continually warned the boy that very few people believed what he said to be true in Kenash. He cautioned Jay about repeating his words. Bael believed that even though Jay was being trained to bring back escaped slaves that did not give him the right to treat them harshly. Jay should treat them as he would want to be treated if their roles were reversed.

As he grew into adulthood, Jay realized he had an obligation to his family in his profession as a Bounty Hunter and they deserved to be honored and respected. Trained and willing to serve his Dynasty, Jay hunted and reacquired runaway slaves. But his status among the wealthy would not change how he treated those less privileged than him and he vowed it never would.
