Cricket

AppearanceImage

Race: Kelvic
Species: Red Squirrel (Sciuris vulgaris)
Gender: Female
Age: 3 months in Kelvic, appears 14 in Human form
Birthday: 32th of Winter, 513
Birthplace: Kenash, Cyphrus Region

Appearance:
Cricket is a young girl, and still growing. Like her small animal counterpart, she is only about 4 feet now, and will probably stop growing at the top end of 4 feet. If she's lucky, she'll get to five feet. Her eyes are big and brown. Her hair is the bright rusty red, a mirrored color to her pelt when she runs around as a squirrel. As of right now, she is malnourished. This translates in slightly duller fur, a weaker looking frame, and all around less enthusiasm to go places.

As a squirrel, she has rusty red fur and stands up at approximately 5 inches right now (will end up at 8 inches). Although she normally weighs about a 1/2 pound at this age, she is a lot lighter due to malnutrition. In the end, she will weigh a little over a pound. Currently, she has very fresh, blood wounds along her neck at the base and top of the Kelvic collar she is forced to wear. Most likely, since the damage has been chronic, she will always have a scar in that region. It is likely the fur will never grow back.

Character Concept
Cricket is a young, naive creature who has a lot to learn about relationships, the world, and what Mizahar has to offer. She is easily molded, and young enough to be morphed into a good or bad creature. Ultimately, she is a blank slate ready to see what the future holds for her. Right now, she does not trust humans due to her history with human groups. Her language skills are lacking, and she is only capable of speaking in single words or short phrases. Long winded conversations confuse her and she tends to grow bored really easily.

As a Kelvic, she needs guidance on her kind. Having been separated from her parents at an early age, she does not understand why she feels the need to be with someone. Cricket is prepared to do whatever it takes to fill this void.

History
Born in Kenash to one of the breeding slave Kelvics, Cricket never really got to know her parents. The moment she was covered and no longer an ugly, skinless rodent, she was taken from her parents. Her first "owner" - if one could call it that - had arranged to have the Kelvic young as a gift for their child. Esra, the child she was given to, was one of the few children within a small caravan of humans that had come to Kenash in search of a few slaves to take with them on their journeys. They had come from a distant city, but Cricket was never privy to that information. Esra, a beautiful little human girl, had dreamed of having her very own cat Kelvic. Being her father's favorite - and only - daughter meant that she got what she wanted. Except, the Kelvic she got made her weep.

Cricket had looked like a cat when she was very young, and was mistakenly given in place of the cat Kelvic that would have served as Esra's pet and personal slave. It was for that reason that Cricket and Esra never truly got along. Esra despised the creature, whom looked more like a rodent then an elegant cat. Yet, it was too late for Cricket to be returned and a better pet sought. The caravan, with their new slaves in tow, left Kenash soon after. Since she was obligated to name her new Kelvic, Esra named her Cricket. Esra considered it an ugly name, for it described an insect that fed on even small, more disgusting lifeforms. Yet, Cricket did not seem to mind. Instead, she tried her very best to appease Esra while they moved to Riverfall to resupply their caravan before heading home.

The other children of the caravan loved Cricket, and would be seen playing with the small Kelvic as she grew - and grow she did. Rapidly, Cricket seemed to change before their very eyes, seemingly by the hour sometimes. In her animal form, the children would throw nuts in between them, allowing the squirrel to climb up their pant legs in efforts to get the nut away from them before it was given to the next child. Esra did not like seeing her pet played with the other children, and half-way through their journey, she locked the Kelvic up by fastening a small iron collar around her little squirrel neck. It was one of those special collars that prevented her from changing back into a human. The human girl, bitter from having an ugly creature in her midst, through Cricket into a cage. It was this bird cage that became Cricket's home while on the road.

No one loved her, no one cared for her, and Esra barely paid enough attention to feed her. Cricket spent most of the journey in the back of the cage, scratching at the collar and tearing at the fur around it. Pathetically, she would look past the wood posts of the bird cage, wondering idly if there was a better person out there that could complete the void she felt within her.

As soon as the caravan settled down outside of Riverfall, Esra took to the city with her family to find supplies. Cricket was left alone for many days, and it was the other children that kept her fed by feeding her scraps through the cage. Finally, one of the other children who had previously enjoyed Cricket's company, decided he would set the Kelvic free. Carrying the cage and a back-pack full of some basic necessities, the little boy took Cricket into the woods. He buried the supplies beneath her "home tree", and before he left, he wished Cricket well. Although he tried to wrestle the collar from her neck with his feeble lock-picking skills, he was unable to. The best advice he could give was to find help from someone with more skills just before he left.

Freedom never tasted so good as Cricket watched the boy leave from her new "home" in the orchard. Looking across the tree from the owl's howl, she felt free. Only the heavy iron collar reminded her that she was still just out of reach of complete freedom.

Languages
    Fluent Language: Common

For age purposes, Cricket is fluent in understanding the Common tongue; however, she is not as great at speaking it and will generally only be able to form small phrases (if that) with her vocabulary. This will change of course as she learns and interacts more as a human, having been trapped a majority of her current existence in her squirrel form.

Lore
    Territory: Riverfall Orchard (Partial)
Knowing When to Run and Hide

Possessions
All of these possessions are currently well hidden beneath Cricket's home tree, courtesy of the boy that freed her. Until she becomes human and can dig it up, she does not have access to these things.
    Simple Over-sized Man's Shirt - Rose Red
    Simple Shorts - White
    Linen Undergarments - white
    Cotton Cloak - brown, hooded
    Simple Mocasins - brown leather,
    1 Waterskin
    Backpack which contains:
1 set of toiletries (comb, brush, soap)
      Rations for one week
      1 Eating Knife
      Flint & Steel

Heirloom

The only heirloom that Cricket can say she has is an iron collar, placed upon her by Esra. Currently, it is locked around her neck, irritating the skin and causing her to scratch incessantly at the choker. Her red fur is often matted with blood from her repeated scratching, and there are whole clumps of hair missing where she has pulled it out. Aside from that, she carries a few of the acorns the children left behind, keeping them close to her personal belongings in the unopened pack.

Housing

Currently, Cricket does not have a home. She lives off the nuts and fruits that the orchard provides. She has been known to wander the streets from time to time, digging in the garbage for extra sheets of paper, food, and scraps of clothing. She does keep most of her things within and old owl nest somewhere up a tree in the orchards. That is as close to a "home" as she will get right now.
