Flipping The Switch

As they walked Russell found himself listening to his words very carefully. Of course there had to be a catch to this, there always was. And it really did sound too good to be true, his bad feeling must have been there for a reason. But he still didn’t want to give up, he was sure that he could come through it unscathed, he was someone a cut above the rest right? At the sound of a special initiation Russell found himself happily surprised, his smile this time was actually real. He hung on every word that the man spoke like a lamb after the slaughter.

Russell nodded as the man told him of the details of the two different types of initiations. This man really must have been a great magic user to make up his own initiation; others out there must have their own too. It made Russell ponder on whether there are other ways voiding could be used. His grandfather was rather skilful, and could do things with it Russell still can’t copy. Maybe one day he’d reach that level of skill, but that would come later. He had to concentrate on this, it once more seemed like something that would be too god to be true.

The first type of initiation truly did sound gruesome, and the risks were almost to great for Russell to go through. Giving in to the pain was for the weak, but blindness was a risk that would end Russell’s road to greatness. He couldn’t let that happen, no matter what. The second initiation sounded a lot simpler. The risks were lowered, but why couldn’t it be done without a trance? It seemed strange for one thing, but then again a lot of things with magic were. Just as Russell was about to voice his thoughts, the man had answered.

So that was the risk without the trance, it really didn’t sound like a good ending. A rather pitiful one if Russell had to be honest, he didn’t want to go without being remembered at the very least, and dying for something that could be done better was even worse in his own opinion.

”When you put it like that, your own brand of initiation clearly is the better choice. It does make me wonder how you came up with such a great idea. The gains on both sides are better by far.” Russell still found it a little strange; nothing is that good of an improvement. Well none that he knew of was he a pessimist, or did he truly know nothing of the world? He’d learn soon enough, and if this man was lying he’d be sure to find a good way to get back at him, but if he were telling the truth Russell really needed to learn more about the world at large.

He found himself smiling a little at the fact the man still needed him, it was certainly true, without the proper knowledge of voiding it really wouldn’t be an easy task. And it wasn’t like he had a good way of getting it out of him without resorting to straight out violence. Russell was almost sure he could get away...If given a good amount of time that is. The risk of losing the fight was far greater than the chance of him getting away, not a risk worth taking what so ever. Not that the fight was going to happen, ”I’m glad that you feel the same sir, I can’t wait to see what we can learn from one another.” Russell said in a rather cheerful voice.

What surprised him was the fact the man still seemed to be misunderstanding the magic, even having seen what it did somehow. Would it be wise to explain the entire mechanics of it right now? Or should he wait for another time. ”Ah, I see where the problem lies; the other side literally is on another side. The void is a near infinitely large place that cannot be reached even if one were to create something as absurd as a ride to the stars and beyond.”{/color} He found himself laughing a little at such an absurd notion, riding to the stars? Not in a million years.

[color=purple]”Voiding while it does open a portal, there is no possible means to guide it. The wizard is recreating an event that could possibly be done naturally. We empty out the space in front of us so that nothing lies there, nothing what so ever. Summoning most likely uses those co-ordinates to guide a portal to another world similar to our own. While voiding empties out an area in front of one to kick-start a hole that leads into another realm, one without the common sense that our own holds. No matter how many things have been introduced into it over the years, it’s still seen as an empty space and it will continue to remain so no matter what we do to try and change that.”

Russell finally saw the problem in his explanation, although it was something that he created accidentally rather than a misunderstanding he had meant to create. Russell entered the apartment, and looked back at his teacher. ”It is certainly a nice home, not too full or covered in unneeded stuff that would cause one to stay at home instead of advancing oneself.” Russell made sure that these words sounded friendly, with a small smile on his face.

Russell stopped himself from raising an eyebrow as the man was already going to start the initiation; well he didn’t come here to share tea and biscuits, so it was certainly welcome. Russell did as he was told. He removed his shirt, and laid down onto the floor, placing his shirt next to him. He closed his eyes, and took a few deep breaths to get himself completely relaxed. Miro’s voice was all that he could hear at the moment. Soon enough he could feel himself becoming tired, and before you knew it he was asleep, all doubts had been washed away. Maybe he’d come to regret it after waking up, or maybe he’d be too busy playing with his new magic.

Flipping The Switch

Postby Miro on April 27th, 2014, 4:25 am

It was seeming that the explanation of the Other Side was becoming more and more convoluted. Perhaps just more confusing. It was like an empty space, some strange place, not like anything the wizard had heard of before. Then there was the mention of another realm, a place that did not behave by the normal logic of things. Such things were hard to understand, but seemed to come together. It was not like another world, not even a world at all. Some realm of emptiness, the other side of this world.

Though now Miro was closer than ever to gaining all of the understanding he needed. He focused on his connection with Ionu's Light, the staff he had grown so close to. It was not all that long ago that he could not even flow Djed through its wood, and now he was not at his best without it. He had even the ability to sense through it, even channel magical effects through it with ease. For example Auristics, in which the staff could relay information with a mere touch. Djed flown down the shaft would reach a target and echo back with new information.

This process was much easier on the Aurist's mind. There was much less strain when casting through it, much like with Hypnotism. The Djed signals sent down the staff reverberated with signals that filled the undead's mind. He could sense the calm in Russell's aura, the peace of his mind, the slowed rate of his heartbeat and breaths. The was at peace, under the effects of the trance, a man clear of inhibition. Not completely clear, never, but so unguarded. The mind had a way of protecting its darkest secrets, even in such a state.

However without their conscious mind to moderate between thought and speech, certain things slipped out more easily. Especially when prodded by a hypnotic suggestion. There was nothing an able Hypnotist couldn't extract from a man put into a trance. The only issue was that the wizard had spent himself elsewhere. The Hypnotism and Auristics, they wore his mind. The Reimancy tired his soul. He had enough to extract the information he needed, but not enough to implant bias into this man. He could not turn Russell into his loyal servant.

Well, that was not true, Miro could always cast more. But a wise caster always knew where to draw the line. If he were to forgo the initiation to Reimancy entirely the Voider would know he was tricked. This would be fine as long as the information was extracted first, but it would mean a bridge burned. But the saved Djed would allow him to dig further, gain more knowledge, find the truly hidden gems. If only he knew where to start looking. No, he would keep this man under his thumb, keep to his word. Trust built was a great reward in itself.

The guy, he was a good one, for a wizard at least. There was something about him that was a bit too naive. A bit too much of a straight arrow maybe. He was the kind of guy that you would expect to have the ability to suck things into an empty realm of eternal darkness but not use it on people. He had a sense about him that was far too noble. For a wizard and for a Ravokian both. Though admittedly it was almost adorable, the way he rested so easily. So innocent, he knew not the monster that stood before him, nor his strongest weapon planted on his heart.

The Hypnotist channeled his Djed through his staff and cast upon his initiate. He pushed emotional responses of trust, compliance, inhibition. These normally subliminal and simple spells operated differently on those put into a trance. They rose to the surface and held greater effect, though still quite subtle. As well he began to speak words in a powerful voice that carried the hypnotic power of suggestion. These words would hold a great emphasis, ring in the mind and hold greater sway than uncharged words.

"Russell, it is Miro, your master, the man you have trusted to initiate you into Reimancy. I am not yet ready to perform the ritual however, because you have yet to hold up your end of the deal. There is still much I need to know about Voiding first. Tell me what you know of the magic, all you know. Reveal your secrets, your honed knowledge, your magical process." The Hypnotist pushed again the emotion of trust and gathered himself to speak again.

Tell me of the portals, what they can do, how to open them, to control them. Tell me you know about the Other Side, this Void Realm, about the seemingly infinite space so different from our own world. I need to know of the magics history, about the risks in using it, and most of all how I can learn it. Tell me all that you know, enough that I might someday be as great as you. Then you will have your own initiation. An apprentice must not hide anything from his master."

Though a person caught in a trance was often silent, detached, there were ways to bring all of this forth. He had heard stories from Alric in his Hypnotherapy work, the things a Hypnotist was capable of. To work past trauma, mental limitations, bring things forth that the conscious mind was not aware of. Things buried deep within the mind and soul, information not available to the mind while awake. It always helped to prod such things along to get the best results. Miro issued the final suggestion a a command more than anything. "Speak!"

Flipping The Switch

Postby Russell Wood on April 29th, 2014, 9:53 pm

It almost felt as if Russell was drifting within darkness, not quite nothingness, but rather a meaningful darkness, within his own mind. The darkness seemed to almost represent his knowledge, while also representing how little he really knew. On the outside Russell seemed to be asleep, or close to it. His breathing was slow, his eyelids were closed, and he seemed to be relaxed, too relaxed. Hearing Miro’s voice seemed to have sparked a reaction of sorts, a second of silence once the man had finished speaking, and Russell felt compelled to tell him what he could.

”I don’t know as much about the void as my grandfather does, he’s studied it inside out. What I can tell you is this much; it’s another realm, a realm of nothingness. There are pockets full of discarded things that wizards have thrown away, trash, their enemies or those things that are too dangerous to allow their lives to continue within our own realm. It’s extremely large, I’m not sure how large, but most likely larger than our own realm.” The explanation to what the void is. Russell had to start with this to continue on with what he would tell the man, it was going to take a good amount of time.

”A portal is something that one could possibly find naturally all you’d have to do is find an area that is empty, devoid of anything. Although I’m not sure how long a portal would last, a second, or a year. A wizard’s portal is essentially using that knowledge to create a portal of their own, understanding what nothingness means is the very first step. It takes a while, weeks of meditation and sitting down in one place, attempting to understand it, repeating a word over and over until it loses all meaning. A truly tedious task, but its outcome is monumental, although those weeks require one to spend it in silence, and away from others.” The words kept flowing out, his eyes didn’t even open once, but his mouth moved as if it was all natural, a disturbing sight for one that isn’t tempered yet.

”After achieving a point in which that word, phrase or sentence loses all meaning, one is ready to begin. Flowing out your djed to empty out the area in front of you, a small point in front of a wizard, until one finally ignites that spark that is needed to fuel the portal, will that to get larger, and feed it with djed. It sounds simple but, it’s actually a harder task than I make it out to be. Moving a portal is a harder task, it requires will power to move a portal, but it won’t move far from the user.” No laughter followed this, a seemingly hollow an empty voice. The way of talking and the accent, the syliran accent that came from his mouth was the only thing that told one it was his own thoughts.

”The most obvious risk when voiding would be getting pulled into the void, one can change the pull, and direction of it too. From attraction, or repulsion, the second is far more dangerous; one could push something out of the void. But as long as you make sure to avoid an omni-directional pull or powerful repulsion without the means to fight with something exceedingly powerful, you should be safe.” Russell had been pulling on knowledge he didn’t even know he had, from what his grandfather had told him when he wasn’t listening, to things that his grandfather must have told other wizards when Russell was asleep or not paying attention.

”The void is a dangerous place, not one you would want to go into, no living being could survive in there, no normal living being. Those things held within there are far too powerful to be allowed outside, take care should you ever choose the option of letting them out.” Russell had explained everything he could pull out from both his conscious knowledge, and sub-conscious, it took a lot out of him, whether he knew it or not. ”That’s all I know, the rest you’ll need to discover for yourself.”Russell fell into silence once more, all of his knowledge of voiding having been robbed from him, his semi-conscious mind fell back into the darkness that was his mind.

Flipping The Switch

Postby Miro on April 30th, 2014, 7:23 am

Miro continued to focus on Russell's aura while the answers were given. Once attuned to an aura the magic became much easier to use. The difficulty in Auristics remained in sorting information taken in and gaining a deeper insight. Much of the wizard's focus was split on listening, so the depth of the information remained consistent. Instead he only felt for the feelings, a way to test for deception. That was, if even deception was possible, as the trance mostly eliminated such things.

The Voider spilled his knowledge without any reservation or even a hint of hesitance. Mention of his grandfather, the man who had taught him, such words inspired a dull feeling. Those feelings of respect and nostalgia, obviously a man well respected. The feelings were slight and fleeting though, all but forgotten as the information kept pouring forth. At first it was just information already presented, but with no hint of deception. It seemed that this was the truth.

Shame it was not that the Other Side was a world, for the technique envisioned earlier would have been glorious. Even more glorious than that was the explanation that came next. Void portals were possible something to occur naturally, but more commonly occurred by a wizard creating these conditions artificially. Much like what had been witnessed before, the sense of emptiness, it was key. The key to learning Voiding came from an advanced understanding of the concept.

But no, not just an understanding, something much more. It was more like a kinship with the concept. To have one's mind become empty, to have ceased to exist. The process reminded the wizard of the initiation method to Hypnotism, but with some definite variations. It was even likely that hypnotic assistance could aid the learning process. It would require an assistant Hypnotist, but luckily Ender could easily serve such a role. A trance might even be ideal, if such a thing could be accomplished by the Irylid.

A mantra to be used in repetition until all meaning is lost, until the world fades away, until existence is void. A fitting way to understand the emptiness of the Other Side, if the undead did say so himself. From there a caster needed to concentrate Djed to empty a space completely, to trigger the portal to tear open. Just as was witnessed earlier. From there the Djed drain came from sustaining it and adding the effect of Pull. Apparently the task of portal movement was exceptionally difficult. All of it simple enough so far.

Finally Russell explained the risks, which was quite interesting. Of course there were the standard risk of personal magic in overgiving, but much more with this discipline. The Other Side was not a suitable place for things to live, a place for trash to be sent. But not only trash was sent there, and what things could survive the realm could be expected to be exceptional. The bit about the Pull took a moment to fully comprehend however. It was still a foreign concept to the Reimancer.

Obviously one could be taken into the Void on accident. This was already explained. But the ability of Pull could change direction, bring things from the Void, repel things. This was the risk in unleashing beings from the realm. But there was a mention of omni-directional Pull. Since it seemed that the Voider remained on the still side of the portal, perhaps this meant to pull from both sides. This would explain much of the risk of self-Voiding. Still an odd term for such a simple concept. It made enough sense to be cautious in attempting such things.

However it seemed that that was all there was to it. No hint of deception, though Miro detected some hint of pride. He attributed this in part to his previous Hypnotism, but as well to the nature of a wizard. It was almost disappointing that there was no more to be explained, as such a lesson was thrilling. To gain the power of such knowledge satisfied him in a way that those without Uldr's gift could never understand. Especially when taken by such means of domination. At least now he had all the information he needed.

Now there was only the matter of an initiation. Miro removed his staff from the still body and felt a sharp pain in his mind. No, he could not do it, he knew it. The feeling of knives in his brain would surely hinder his ability to cast. Even a master of his level could easily lose control and kill an initiate. It was not a mistake he wished to make. While true that Russell hadn't any more knowledge on Voiding to share, he could still make a valuable pawn. A proper apprentice was always worth investing in.

The Chained One did not need to undo his trance. He could not, lest he wanted to ruin his reputation. The initiate would be fine to remain resting on the ground for a while longer. Perhaps only a few bells, at most half a day. It would not take all that long to regain composure. The wizard propped himself against the wall on his bed and let his staff come to rest against his shoulder. He closed his eyes to fight off the pain in his mind, though it showed no sign of calming.

As usual when it came time for the Chained One to rest, he would assign his Familiar the task of waking him. Their telepathic bond was strained with the ache from the mental strain. It caused the undead to wince to communicate through it. "Ender, unseal yourself, watch the day pass. A few bells, but no more than half a day." The Irylid was used to such things and shifted to the form of a frozen silver orb. "Yes master, I understand. Rest." It made Ender happy to feel useful.

Time passed slowly with such pain and boredom. The ache of mind continued for a couple bells before the effect completely dissipated, though in its place was a mental fatigue. A fog that clouded all thought. This helped the time pass for Miro, but the Irylid was forced to simply watch. Watch out the window at the slow moving sun, at the man in the trance, and of course, to watch his resting master. Such things were actually quite peaceful and enjoyable for him. The Irylid found such a calm environment charming.

To be left with naught but his own thoughts and feelings was a pleasant release from the bond that chained him to the monster that was his master. Not that he found the wizard to be all bad, but there was no denying his partner's monstrosity. Though as all good things must, this time of peace came to an end. Nearly five bells had passed and the sun was low in the sky. "Miro, it is time. Time to wake, continue what you have started. The sun is near to set." It was almost tempting for the Irylid to perform the initiation, but it had already been established such a thing was not permitted.

Miro's eyes shot open in an instant; bulging grey orbs that peered out from behind a mask in the form of a skull. His mind was fresh, though he had nearly forgotten what he was doing before he closed his eyes. A stray glance caught sight of Russell on the ground. He laid his staff across the bed and walked to stand beside his initiate. Slowly he knelt so that he hovered over top the man and watched his chest slowly rise and fall. He desperately hoped that the peaceful state would not be disturbed too much from the act of the initiation. Most people tended to scream quite loudly, even when in a trance.

The undead reached for Russell's hands and swiftly swiped his sharp claws across the man's palms. The black nails dug in deep and caused them to leak crimson. As well there seemed to be some signs of discomfort from the man, though subtle they were. The Reimancer stood and focused his Djed to his hand and began to force it through his skin as a gaseous Res. The aqua colored substance hazed down from his outstretched limb and split apart. A portion to both of the wounds made on the hands and the rest to his face.

This was the part that was truly painful. Res was required to enter the body, to remain inside for several chimes. The feel of the substance pushing through the body was beyond painful, and most screamed until their consciousness was lost. It was enough to leave a haunting memory in most cases. A trance would bury such memories however. Though it was likely the pain would still cause loud cries. Miro held his fist clenched as the spell lingered above Russell, but slipped its way in as the fist was forced open.

The Res dug into the cuts and traveled up through the arm and into the body. Though the substance moved slowly, the pain would be great from the start. As well the amount taken in through the mouth and nose would flood in, linger in the lungs, choke the initiate. An amount would be released with each breath, but then taken in again as more air was drawn in. The process always brought back painful memories for Miro, but he could not let it break his concentration. After an amount of time had passed, several odd chimes, he slowly retracted the spell. The initiation was complete.

Now all that was left was to wake his new initiate. There was a slight puddle of blood near each of Russell's hands, he was still shirtless and the sun was disappearing below the horizon. Without doubt, when the man woke, there would be questions. But still, a final hypnotic order was given. Words charged with the power of suggestion were spoken firmly. "Russell, it is time to wake. Move through the darkness, see the light pouring through, your consciousness returning. When I snap my fingers, you will open your eyes, awoken as a Reimancer." And the Hypnotist brought his fingers together and loosed a reverberating snap.

Flipping The Switch

Postby Russell Wood on May 4th, 2014, 5:22 pm

Russell still could only see the darkness that surrounded him, floating around within what could be called his mind, he couldn’t even think properly, it was like he was still there yet he wasn’t. He didn’t know how long he had been in this state, but it was still rather weird. After a long time of floating around within what could be called his mind Russell felt a wave pass through it, that displaced the darkness and replaced it with a burning red. It hurt, that was all he could think, nothing but that. The darkness that he’d grown accustomed to had been replaced by this burning red world, a world of pain.

On the outside tremors were beginning to pass through Russell’s body, tremors caused by the pain, and the lack of proper air he was getting. Weak moans tried to make their way out of his mouth, moans of pain, almost like what one would expect a haunting ghost to make. It was more than simply pain, confusion was etched in that voice too, the more the res moved within his body, the heavier the tremors got, until they blew into full out spasms, the moans which had been quiet before got rather loud. This continued on as the Res moved in and around his body, it was a pain he wasn’t accustomed to. Then once the res left, it stopped, the pain disappeared and the spasms slowly began to devolve into tremors and then into stillness. His body was the picture of peaceful once more, but things were a little different within his mind.

The burning red continued to wobble and wave, until it was replaced by a calming blue, a dark blue, nonetheless it made the pain seem almost worth it. Russell didn’t know what it was, but somehow it allowed him to think once more, it calmed him yet it was only a simple color that one could see everyday when looking into the sky. It was moving and flowing in a most interesting way, in a way it reminded him of water, or the sky above, was the color blue always so beautiful?

Everything seemed to end upon hearing Miro’s voice, the blue was replaced by black, and soon enough he began to open his eyes, he felt tired, and groggy. It was like he had over-used magic before then, maybe it was a side-effect of what had occurred. Memories began to flood in, from the time he spent in a trance; they were blurry, almost like he had been dreaming. What had happened? But he felt like he should be angry at someone, and did he speak about the void? It felt like he did at one point, it was all very confusing to Russell.

He looked up at the man in front of him, had he come through with his part of the deal? Or was it all a well made ruse. ”Ah, Miro sir, how did everything go?” Why did the feeling of anger well up at the sight of the man, a flash of a memory, of him talking about the void came up, a world of darkness. Russell’s polite smile turned into a small frown, should he voice the question in his head? No it’d be better to wait until he got up properly. Russell went to pick up his shirt, but noticed a stinging pain around the palms of his hand, so the man must have been telling the truth. Suddenly a pulse of pain went through his body, he felt hot, really hot. His vision blurred up, what the hell was this, the air was knocked straight out of his lungs without any sort of impact.

Russell had to calm himself, a few deep breaths yes, that would work, or at least he hoped it would work out. He concentrated on a spot within his forehead as he breathed in and out, it wasn’t working the way he expected it too he really needed to learn how to meditate properly. Soon enough the pain began to subside. He picked up his shirt and put it on, before putting on his cloak. It was a slow process; he got up, and looked his teacher in the eye.

Now how could he word this? He did misinform his teacher, while the man did explain things to him, but had the man used this to forcefully drag knowledge out of him, and how would he know whether he could use this res? Russell sighed, this wasn’t going to be an easy conversation. ”Ah Sir, I can’t help but ask this question, but could it be possible that you used this to drag some information from me? I’m not angry, I just wished to know, and it had been bothering me ever since I’d woken up.” Russell did find this a good way of wording it. Now to get to the problem of how to use this magic. ”Also, I can’t help but find myself wondering how one goes about manipulating Res.” While he wasn’t sure whether it had all gone to plan, it was still going to be useful information, now just to see how this man reacted.

Flipping The Switch

Postby Miro on May 5th, 2014, 12:52 am

Russell woke from his trance as commanded, though the man had a lot taken out of him. The initiation tended to do that, but this may have been the most seamless ritual ever performed by man. The initiate did not even scream, though the toll it took on the body was apparent. The technique was proven a time over, this time with better results than ever. Perhaps if Glyphing as well was included the initiation ritual could be completely perfected. Though there was a time that it was believed the pain was a necessary part of Reimancy.

Poor Rayage, he had suffered the most brutal of the initiations, and it had done a lot. Never had the Reimancer had such a promising student before. The rate at which the art was mastered was astounding, but so too was the apprentice. Which method of initiation worked best was still of debate within the undead's mind, but someday he would find absolute perfection. The ritual itself was not of importance as much as the instruction that followed. That was where the true development needed to occur.

Indeed that was the place where Hypnotism and Glyphing found a shining, for there was an advanced technique that could be performed. It was one that the wizard had been perfecting for a while, an incredible technique, at least in theory. Hypnotism could be used to affect the mind in many ways, all of the caster's design. Thoughts, feelings, senses, all the things needed to create artificial memories. With the magic artificial memories could be created, not only for destructive purposes, but to enhance the mind's understanding. It was still only a theory, a technique in need of mastery still.

Russell seemed to gain awareness of his surroundings, ask how the proceess went, begin to clothe himself again. Miro only gave a reassuring nod, not a word spoken. He was still in his mind, contemplating his next move, the path that he would follow. The Voider was his apprentice now, his to guide. It was likely that time where the truth of the arrangement was shown. Though as the man began to question things, the Chained One smirked. The truth in the arrangement was not something spoken, but shown. Lies and manipulation were always a part of the deal.

"Drag information from you? No, I did not, though I very well could have. Instead I was focused on the initiation, on keeping you alive. It takes a great deal of concentration, and I was already weary from the day's casting. I hadn't the means to drag information out of you. However my previous initiates have mentioned some dream-like experiences during the ritual. You did some mumbling, some hardly coherent speaking. To me it sounded as if you thought yourself trapped within the Void. This could be what you experienced. Does that make sense?"

All of it lies, as usual, but the ignorant had no way of proving them as such. At best there could be suspicion, doubt, but it could be nothing more. To go against the master's say was a betrayal, something an apprentice was not allowed. "However, as to your Reimancy, you will need some time. For now you will feel the after effects, but that is normal. Let them pass, meditate, and eventually you will find the magic. First you'll learn to generate Res, then to transmute it. I will guide you along the way. Though first I think we need to get some things cleared up. You are my apprentice after all. And I am your new master."

The truth of the arrangement, this meant a few things. It meant a full display of the benefits offered and the restrictions as well. Normally this was explained in full beforehand, but such a thing could not be risked. Miro needed Voiding, so he took a few shortcuts. Though there was still a risk of betrayal. Wizards were that sort, cocky, only truly loyal when pinned down or properly compensated. Eventually every master would outlive his usefulness, so the key was to pin them before that happened.

Miro walked to his staff and took it in hand. He looked over the marvel of Magecrafting with a sllight smirk. "Let me explain everything. Not only am I a Reimancer, but a skilled practitioner of the Flux, Glyphing and Hypnotism. I have other knowledge and skills that I am still working to develop, but I am capable of offering little in their development. Glyphing is the creation of sigils and scrolls to modify magic, the Flux is the manipulation of the body's pathways to channel strength and Hypnotism is the ability to affect another's mind."

Leeching, Auristics, Morphing, Summoning, Animation, he knew them, but not well enough. Not all cards should be revealed so swiftly, for timing was everything. And where there was gain there must also be loss. The Chained One's tone turned grim, obviously serious of what he spoke. "I will teach you all that I know, as you are ready, as I see fit. My goal is much the same as yours, to help you to reach your potential as a powerful wizard. I will give you all I can to aid you, but as I mentioned before there is a cost to such things. Loyalty, trust, cooperation."

"First, let me say, you are not the first. You may think you are special, and you are, but there are varying degrees of special. Many have overestimated their own worth, thought themselves more powerful, more cunning, more lucky than I am. Simply put, they were not. Not a single one of them. All I ask is that when I give advice, you take it. When I give you my word, you accept it as truth. When I issue a command, on the rare instance I do, you perform it without hesitation. I will always listen to what you have to say, but I am the master, you the apprentice."

Truly the undead's mind had been touched by Rhysol today. The way he deceived flowed so naturally, there was no hesitation. While the morals of his stories were always true, so far not a single one of them had much truth to them. So far not a single apprentice had died by Miro's hand, but all of them had slipped away. "You must understand one simple thing Russell. As my apprentice, I have given you my trust, put you into my care. I have shown you the greatest act of love a wizard can manage. To forsake such a thing is the ultimate betrayal. The consequence for such a thing is death. Do you understand?"

It was a simple enough truth to understand. Though at this point a few might have trouble accepting that there was no turning back, on second thoughts. To have doubts was one thing, a wise man always does. But to act on them was something else. The gravest of mistakes, in this case. When finally Russell had come to grips with this all, the wizard had but one more thing to show. He had a partner, one not formally introduced. A being of ice from a distant planet known as Fryden.

The tone in the undead's voice lightened to become soft and reassuring. It was best that fear did not rule the relationship, only provide an understanding of consequences. "There is one more magic I practice I wish to show you, though it is not like the rest. It is called Familiary, the art of bonding to an otherworldly creature known as a Familiar. Mine is an Irylid. His name is Ender. Make yourself known Ender." Miro held his arm out and the icy bracelet on it shifted into a highly silver orb of ice a few feet in diameter.

For once Ender took the lead in this role without prompt. He began to explain things without order or implication. "Hello Russell, I am Ender, an Irylid from Fyrden. My race has the ability to bond to wizards of Mizahar. Through this bond our souls are connected, and by extension our very lives. Miro and I share a connection of the mind, being able to transmit thought to one another, and so much more. I share Djed with my master as well, and I am able to use his magic. As his apprentice, I am tasked with your protection."

It was improvised, not what the undead would have advised saying, but perfect nonetheless. The Reimancer nodded in confirmation with a grin on his face. He was sure that this meant the beginning of a wonderful relationship. Russell, if all went well, he would become a most valuable asset. This time Miro would not ruin things, as he always seemed to do. Being named his apprentice was almost a poisonous title. "I believe that is all I need from you today. You are welcome to ask questions and leave as you please. But as well, if you'd prefer, you may stay here. My door is always open to you, my dear apprentice."

Flipping The Switch

Postby Russell Wood on May 5th, 2014, 7:21 pm

Russell nodded as the man confirmed that he indeed hadn’t done what Russell suspected him to have done. Of course he wasn’t naive enough to believe it straight off the bat, but he didn’t have proof, and the memories he did have did indeed seem pretty dream-like. There was also the hazy memory of being within a black space, so it might be the truth. Russell kept his eyes on Miro for a few seconds longer before shaking his head as if to get rid of any visual signs of his suspicions that he had.

What was it that bothered him about the man ever since he had woken up, Russell couldn’t tell, but he knew better than to ignore a hunch like this; he’d probably have to stay quiet for the time being. The man in front of him was strong and he didn’t know what else he could do so he stood there quietly and nodded. Pulses of heat were still flooding across his body, and he couldn’t see properly at the moment either, he had tunnel vision and with each pulse his vision blurred, shapes became obscure every few seconds, and each breath felt like someone was pouring oil onto a fire.

But he still continued to listen, his drive to become even greater was there, and he couldn’t slack even if his body felt as if it was being unravelled from the inside out. Res, this amazing source of energy is something that he’d be able to use for himself, and improve upon. But he tensed up a little as he heard about the master-apprentice relationship and what it would involve; he had to listen as carefully as he could. Russell found himself pleasantly surprised to see that the man knew two arts that he himself practiced, although flux is something that he never really took to, he could still see the uses in improving in that if he had to be honest with himself.

”That’s interesting, I’ve caught whispers of what glyphing is, but I myself have never studied it, the other two are things I do know myself, although I’m better at one than I am at the other.” Russell said, he didn’t even need to be encouraged to explain this. If the man knew his skills then he’d be able to teach him in a better manner. While there was always a chance of being turned on, he’d need trick up sleeve, or a dagger tied to his leg. Not that he expected it to do much against this man.

The sudden change of tone caught Russell by surprise, but he didn’t show it. He kept a calm facade; the smile that he usually put up was hidden away, changed with a more serious expression. Russell listened carefully and hung on each and every word. His posture fixed itself unconsciously, his back straightened, and his arms were crossed in front of him, he was feeling doubtful, a little defensive even, as if his arms could stop his emotions from making themselves known. That’d be all down to him and how he played his next few words. Should he say what he was really thinking, or perhaps stay polite? It was a hard choice for one such as Russell to make, he didn’t feel like putting up this veil of a nice person, he wasn’t particularly bad, but rather he was the definition of chaotic neutral, someone who doesn’t aim to hurt others, but should they step in his way, it will happen.

So with that thought in mind, Russell knew what he had to do, the words he had to say right now, he couldn’t back out after coming this far, there’s no way anyone would let someone run away after giving away their magic, nor could Russell learn it alone. He took a deep breath before letting it out in a rather loud sigh.

” I understand, we’ll help take one another to new heights, no matter what the cost right?” Russell said what was on his mind, his right knee was bent a little with the toes touching the ground, he had a small smile on his face, although it looked a lot more sincere than the other one, but not in a good way. It seemed darker than before; as if he had chosen to open the pandora’s box with knowledge of what would follow.

What took Russell by surprise was this other magic, familiary. So he was bonded to this being? Russell had never seen anything like it, he found himself looking at the silvery ball of an ice-like make-up. How interesting, it was a whole level above what he’d expected, and it was alive too. Russell couldn’t fathom how this worked, but it had been happening often as of recently, so it was hardly a surprise to know that there were more things he didn’t know about. He waited for the being to finish introducing itself. ”It’s truly a pleasure to meet you Ender; hopefully we’ll get along well with one another in the future.” He said with a nod, he wasn’t even sure how the hell this being could speak, nor see, if it could do that one to begin with.

Russell then fixed his attention back to Miro, it was now official, this man was his master and he had become tied to him in the most interesting of ways. A bond of magic, a loose bond that could possibly break any second, yet Russell found that the chances of that happening were too small, extremely unlikely. ”I’m glad to be your apprentice sir; it’ll be a pleasure working with you.” He said as he took a bow, before moving back into the rather confident straight backed posture.

He crossed his arms once more. ”Although I do have a few questions that would ease the flab in my mind if answered. The first one would be where is this Fryden? And do all the beings there appear the same as Ender? The second question is how is a bond through familiary made? And the final question is, how does one grow to a greater level in hypnotism, I’ve been stuck at a certain point for a period of time, and I find myself constantly wondering just how I can pass over this wall.” Russell sighed as he finished his last question, while he berated himself for speaking of one of his weaknesses out in the open, another part of him felt this was the best choice to make.

Flipping The Switch

Postby Miro on May 6th, 2014, 6:35 am

Miro was eager to learn Voiding, but realized he would need to be prepared to leave the city for a while. Likely not a possibility for a few days. The undead would likely need to train Russell on how to use Reimancy, perhaps the Flux and Hypnotism too. By now he was comfortable to give a few lessons with both magics, however teaching everything to a complete novice was too troublesome. This was always the benefit of taking a wizard as an apprentice. Russell was almost perfect.

With a little Hypnotism, a bit of control, guidance really, the Chained One could make the perfect apprentice. The benefits of manipulating the mind while teaching were great for creating the desired results. Enhancing the correct emotions and guiding the mind to find the answer a student reaches beyond their potential. Though first they had to be receptive to the magic, open to influence. He needed another trance to ensure that his apprentice would remain loyal.

Though for now he had to be focused on teaching magic. Russell had questions that needed answers. "Fyrden is a world far away accessible only by the magic of Summoning. On the planet there are several possible Familiars for wizards to take. They are bound by a contract signed by both parties that joins their souls. As for Hypnotism, that is something else." The Voider was also a Hypnotist, which was perhaps slightly unfortunate.

To have his apprentice become powerful was something he could not deny, he would train them always. But Hypnotism stood chance of hindering his dominance, something he could not have either. Like in all personal magic, power had to be controlled. "Hypnotism is a magic that requires intuition, understanding, cunning. You must be able to emulate and manipulate your targets mind and feelings." It was a magic that Miro himself had struggled with.

The key to Hypnotism was timing and precision. To present things in the just the right way, to make the right impression. "A Hypnotist must first decide what they wish to accomplish. Using a mix of language and magic, you must guide your target to perform as you desire. Your voice is a means of expression, as is your body, a stare, a gesture, everything. A Hypnotist's influence expands beyond that by their presence."

That was only part of what must be done though. The true test was in the spell itself. What manipulations were added made all the difference. "A person is complex, and thus so too must your manipulation. A hypnotic manipulation should start with the most subtle and basic spells. Learning to adjust the right feelings together, along with the right suggestions is key. When finally you can master this, more advanced techniques will become apparent."

There was not much more the wizard cared to teach for right now, but he would not force things to come to a close. Maybe just give a few hints. "I am quite fatigued from the initiation ritual, and I am feeling the need to take it easy. I have some theories I need to work over, and lessons to plan for you. You should take time to meditate on your Res. After a day or so, come back to me, whenever you feel ready. I will train you then." Perhaps just one big hint instead.

Miro needed to learn Voiding, to prepare to Hypnotize Russell and to teach him as well. It would be interesting to see what element the newly initiated Reimancer would be attuned to. Though there were more important things to focus on, like techniques. Glyphing, Hypnotism, even Voiding. There was something there, it just had to be found. The undead moved to sit at his desk and held his arm out for his Familiar to return. The Irylid floated back to its master and returned to its sealed form.

"I am glad to have you as my new apprentice Russell, and I look forward to your training. I have taken an interest in your magic of Voiding, and I think I will do some research. I have also some techniques that should be of some use in your lessons. With a bit of practice you will understand the basics of your magics. The key is to have absolute control over the magic you do possess. If you have no where to go, you are free to stay here. All I ask is that you do not interrupt my studies and respect my home."

Flipping The Switch

Postby Russell Wood on May 6th, 2014, 11:12 am

Russell was taking in everything his teacher was telling him, so Ender was from this place far away. He couldn’t help but wonder more about this art that was summoning, to allow someone to access other worlds. Russell could only imagine the things that could be done with such a magic, it didn’t seem powerful at a first glance but most things were like that, it took a bit of creativity and a spark of genius to turn something mundane into the most dangerous weapon wielded. Russell considered himself such a person, whether it was arrogance or self-confidence that sparked such a thought didn’t matter to him.

”I see, that’s certainly good to know.” Russell’s tone showed that he was indeed thinking about what the man had said, it seemed droned out as if he had just woken up. He found it a little hard to think, the heat was still there. It was easing up slowly, although to Russell there was no difference in the pain it caused him, sudden movements would certainly mess him up and open him up to anything should it occur while he is going through the streets of Ravok.

Russell was snapped out of his thoughts by the talk of hypnotism, this he had to listen to very carefully. He was low on djed, he could tell that much; so there wasn’t going to be any practicing hypnotism tonight. He already knew how to form the magic, but hearing it from someone else backed up his thoughts on it, he’d be able to continue on forward without any hesitation from this point on. ”I see, thank you very much sir. I’ll be taking my time to think on the advice you have just given me.” Let the man think that it was something he needed to think upon, Russell was going to go all out with practice in the following days, not that this Master needed to know that of course, he was still another wizard.

Russell was already prepared to leave, he had to go back to his room within the boarding house and get some sleep, today had been a rather long day and he didn’t expect things to turn out this way, but it had done so indeed. ”I shall do so sir.” Precise and polite as always, Russell nodded before uncrossing his arm.

Now he had to leave soon, his body was heating up once more; this would be a pain in a literal sense too. He let the man finish with what he had to say next, before Russell let a small smile onto his face. ”I truly do appreciate the offer sir, but I think I’ll be on my way home, I’ve got a few things to take care off myself and it’s already dark outside, I’d prefer to finish those things before it gets truly late. I do appreciate the opportunity to study underneath you, do take care for now, and it has been a pleasure meeting you too Ender.” Russell then turned to leave through the door. He had said all he needed to say and took what he needed to. This was his first great step toward power, and there wasn’t anyone who was going to stop him from advancing.

He stepped onto the streets of Ravok with a rather large smile on his face; his hands were firmly tucked into his pockets. Things were only going to go uphill from here. Even if his body was melting from the inside out there was nothing that could dampen his mood what so ever today, not a single person, place or thing. From chuckles came a laugh, Ravok was truly the place for him, nothing would stop him in his endeavours. Now where was his home from here....?
