Built into the cliffs overlooking the Suvan Sea, Riverfall resides on the edge of grasslands of Cyphrus where the Bluevein River plunges off the plain and cascades down to the inland sea below. Home of the Akalak, Riverfall is a self-supporting city populated by devoted warriors. [Riverfall Codex]

45th of Summer 514 AV (Morning)

As much as Jaye adored the Sun Goddess she was rather annoyed with her constant and unyielding presence. Her rays ran like hair along the corners and valleys of the city, reflecting off the water that trickled and dazzled throughout blinding both forms uncomfortably.

The City Council had announced this morning that sunshades were to be erected throughout the city streets, creating at least the semblance of coolness though the long fabric lengths could not drain the air of its oppressive heat and humidity. However, as Jaye slid through the streets hiding out beneath the sunshades that had been erected that night when the city did much of its activities she was marvelously glad for them. Though the fabric could not stop the heat from sticking to her stomach and legs, crawling up her body in as oppressive a manner as the sea had done last season it dimmed the weight of sunbeams that typically scorched her back during her walk to work.

Most of the Riverfall denizens had taken up awakening during the night when the city was the coolest to do as much of their activities and errands as possible and sleeping throughout the day but Jaye could not adjust as easily as they. In her human form she was blind in the darkness of night, and only in her equine form could she find solace from the ignorance night presented her eyes. I must be careful to trod around as a horse in Riverfall...this isn't Endrykas, a horse is not simply left of its own accord here... She warned herself. Thus, she was left to the day.

The stone pathways throughout the city were largely empty but for the volunteers and workers that worked throughout its length erecting the sunshades. Gazing at their sweat lathered chests and red faces Jaye smiled appreciatively at each and every one. Though they were not out fighting the Zith forces that always threatened Riverfall they were warriors against the Sun that at this moment was the largest known threat to Riverfall and Jaye could not help but gaze bedazzled by their generosity of spirit.

Rounding the corner the Zhongjie Warren appeared at her right, its colourful and wavering tents so reminiscent of home she forcefully stilted her gait to keep from pelting towards it. Workers had leaned long ladders along the tall trees that framed the area tying and strapping the wavering belts of fabric to several as the stretched it out over the broad road. Several workers lay stretched beneath trees panting heavily. Even a few minutes work in the blazing sun was enough to leave anyone exhausted, even the resilient Akalak couldn't continue endlessly.

A deep orange Akalak at the far side of the street was the only one wasting his energy with hand motions that seemed frivolous considering the heavy heat, motioning and calling out orders to several people at once he seemed at his wits end as his work force slowly dwindled as several more workers succumbed to the heat and sought the slight respite of shade.

Sauntering slowly towards the man, his deep orange face tinted red with effort and heat she offered her hand awkwardly. Loathe, in part, to help and endanger herself with the threat of sunstroke Jaye bit her own lip in defiance. As Asher would say, she wanted to be a hero didn't she? And being a hero required work and effort at ones own expense for others. She couldn't stand idly by when there was so obvious a way to help.

"I am able bodied...If you need more workers I would lo-," She cut herself off for a moment as she considered the sentence, only someone insane would love to help in these conditions, "I can help." She finished lamely releasing the surprised grasp of the tall leader.

"W-well, yes of course we could use help." He blinked silently for a few moments before pointing at one of the long sunshades. "Each corner of the fabric has a reinforced hole. The fabric needs to be stretched over the street by two people and tied to a secure fixture. We are tying them to the trees there and to building beams there," He motioned to the right and then the left as he spoke, "You'll need a piece of rope to thread through each rung. Then, you climb down and pick up the other end of the fabric with your partner and climb the next ladder and continue fastening them. We are trying to cover as much of the city as possible so you'll need to make sure you aren't wasting fabric overlapping the shades." He instructed briefly.

Though the gaps will allow some sunlight to wander through the streets it will also allow some air movement so the streets don't become too stagnant... Jaye though remembering asking her father why the tops of their tents had holes in them letting the elements they were supposedly trying to protect themselves from into their abode.

Meeting the eyes of a young Konti whose partner had taken too the shade both Jaye and the young woman mutely nodded at each other moving to fetch a large slate of the fabric from the cart alongside the road. In this heat, words and waves were frivolous and the two settled into a routine with the minimum of gestures. This form of communication suited Jaye who spent more than half her life as a horse playing an awkward and unhappy game of charades with humans.

Reaching out she snagged two pieces of pre-cut rope. Placing them and the fabric in one hand she began her slow ascent up the ladders and towards the leafy roof. Swaying uncomfortably near the top Jaye clung to the tree trunk as she gazed down from what she perceived to be a great height. Don't fall...Don't fall...Don't fall... she chanted to herself as she threaded one piece through the tarp.

Her partner was long practiced through the morning it seemed and was already patiently waiting at the top of her own ladder. Tightening the fabric between them Jayes heart hammered as hard as the sun beat on her shoulders as she wrapped the rope around the tree.

The only tie she knew from her childhood was the slip knot used on horse leads. Slipping the rope about itself until she had created an oval through which to tuck the tail Jaye felt the ladder wobble beneath her legs again. Almost done...Almost done...She begged the ladder as she finished the final yank.

But the ladder didn't care.

Beneath her clumsy teenager legs the ladder began to lean to left threatening to release its tenuous hold on the bark of the tree. Struggling not to scream and holding the tree tighter Jaye blanched.

...I can't get down....She whimpered to herself watching her Konti partner wave to her from the ground. The ground. the far far far away stone pavement. Her stomach lurched.

Gossamer Wings Erect A Gossamer City [Calters]

Cal, strangely enough, was in a fairly good mood.

He had awoken early that morning and rather than sulk in the house about the heat as he had planned, he had found himself taking a self-indulgent flight. On his way, he found himself stopping at a secluded body of water. There, he spent the rest of his morning in serenity. He swam, bathed, and soaked luxuriously. He sang loud songs in every language he knew and a few he didn't know. He even brought out his ocarina and gave it a whistle for a bit. Just as he had found a small fish to eat, he heard the morning bells chiming in the distance.

By that time, he was thoroughly saturated and felt heavy, but it was a pleasant weight. It was not unlike the weight of a child on your back; it was heavy, but Cal knew it meant everything was okay. He shook himself off and lugged his weighted body onto a nearby rock. Within a few ticks, his wings were dry enough to fly. Calters took off into the air without hesitation.

He moved at a decent pace. He flew with purpose, but not as though he were rushing. Calters wanted to take the time to enjoy the treetops and beauty of nature before he found his way back into the suffocating town. When he fluttered over Riverfall at last, what he saw removed his merriment altogether.

There were multiple people sitting about. They were under the trees, on balconies, in the bars, and even up in some of the trees. Cal slowed to a stop and sighed heavily. He watched the people work silently, hanging something from the tall poles.

Why me? Why do there have to be so many people just when I was starting to enjoy myself? That's right, because I'm a bitter Akvatari and the world hates me back.

With a barely audible sigh, Calters brought himself down to the treetop level. At least he could find out the meaning of this social event. And perhaps get himself a good drink out of it. That might make this mess worthwhile...just maybe

The woman Cal flew up to was a beautiful one, but she was the kind of beauty she probably didn't recognize. But Calters, as a fan of art, knew a great sculpture when he saw one. Her body did appear sculpted, in a way. He moved his eyes up her long, shapely legs slowly before trying to catch her eye beneath her soft, dark hair and inquire about a good drink at the upcoming festival. Unfortunately, the Sculpted Woman was not looking back at him.

Her eyes were fixed on the ground in a horrified expression. Her mouth was pressed tightly closed as though she were holding something back, and her hands gripped the bark of the tree until her skin was almost white.

At first, Cal thought she was hiding from him. Did I scare her? I bet she doesn't like Akvatari and I made her angry by coming this close. I should go.

But as Cal turned to do just that, he heard a soft whimper from the Sculpted Woman. She was mouthing something to herself, and it certainly didn't look like "good riddance" to Calters. Against his better judgment, he pumped his wings to bring himself in front of the Sculpture.

Ever so slowly, he reached his hand out and tapped the Sculpture's hand, retreating quickly in case she was afraid.

"Miss?" He asked in his rough baritone voice, "Are you okay?"
He knew it was a stupid question, but what else could he say? Are you afraid of me, or the ground?

Despite the furry tailed, butterfly winged thing hovering just before her the ground captured her attention far more heartily than any silent being could. It screamed at her from its abode, threatening her with its rough chalked mouth and bitter seams. Whimpering louder Jaye pressed her nose against the bark and shut her eyes tightly.

She could hear the voice of her partner call to her repeatedly but the sound was dim beneath the roaring thud of her heart as it raced in her ears. The only thing that drew her out of her petrified reverie was the gentle cold tap of a finger on the back of her hand.

Eyes widening in surprise her eyes flitted open meeting the pale blue eyes of the man before her. Grey hair teased his moving jaw as he spoke to her, his rough voice belaying his age despite the youthful mouth that uttered it. At first, all she saw was his face making her glance downward again, How did I get to the bottom?, she wondered even as he stomach lurched and she hung onto the tree tighter.

"Miss? Are you okay?" The voice cajoled quietly. How can he be here? she tilted her head confused before she was able to draw her cheek far enough away from the wood to gaze over his body. A grey furry tail hung from the mans pale torso and atop his back were large russet butterfly wings. A sharp gasp caught her breath and her equine mentality reared its panicked head.

A Creature...Who knows how vicious or powerful it is... Grown in the Sea of Grass, anything inhuman was first perceived as a thread. In her panic she lost her grip on the tree, struggling to scurry down the ladder and away from the creature as quickly as possible. Her foot slipped, her heart lurched. I'm going to fall...I'm going to die... she whimpered as her fingertips skittered over the sweat sodden food and her feet reached out to save her but only found air.

Tilting backward she stared at the brilliant creature with wide eyes and extended a hopeless hand towards his. She didn't dare yell for help from a creature as likely to kill her as save her but the gesture was as instinctual as the cadence of a canter or the body shake during fly season.

Calters was a thinker.

He believed that the best decisions were made by carefully weighing the pros and cons, preferably over a pint. He never did anything quickly; perhaps it was due to the fact that he could never move quickly on land. But with the Sculpted Woman slipping, falling, nearing the ground where he was sure she would shatter, Calters did something he had never done before.

He made a lightening-fast decision.

Before he knew it, the Sculpted Woman's outstretched hand was caught in his own. Cal let out a strained breath and attempted to swing the Sculpture into his arms as a husband would his wife.

What actually happened was a bit less romantic. The Sculpture ended up thrown over his shoulder, still stiff with fear. The usually pestering, saddening thoughts in Cal's mind were silenced by the adrenaline rushing through his head. Only one thought remained singing a loud, monotone song.

She's safe.

In his arms(rather, over his shoulder) Cal could feel how truly delicate the woman was. She was light in weight. She was thin and boney, but faintly muscled in her legs. She had almost no curves to speak of. Altogether, this made him think that she was a laborer of some sort. But then again, there were none of the harsh bruises or cuts of a working woman.

What does she do? Who is she?

He idly wondered if the Sculpture thought the same things of him while at the same time trying to reassure himself that it didn't matter.

After what Cal was sure were several bells, he finally reached the ground. Reluctantly, Cal lifted the Sculpted Woman off of his shoulder and placed her on her feet. Unsure of what to do next, he bit his lip and looked down at her feet.

Suddenly, Calters' brain flickered back to life, supplying all the thoughts that had been quiet during his flight.

You're a freak of nature. She doesn't want to see you, she sure doesn't want to talk to you. She's frightened out of her mind. Can't you think? Just for once! You should have let her figure it out on her own! If you're so afraid of her breaking, what makes you think she's safe with you?

Hovering awkwardly above the ground, Calters said the only thing he could think of around his loud and cluttered head.

"I'm sorry."

Jayes eyes widened with elation as the mans cold fingers tangled with hers. A heavy huff and lurch and she found her breath shoved from her lungs as her abdomen fell heavily over his shoulder. Groaning she dug her nails into his back with fright as they descended quickly her stomach lurching with the plummet.

His body was denser than she expected and took her weight with what seemed like ease to her. Cold compared to the blazing heat that had a stream of sweat staining her back and her hair sticking to the side of her face she wrapped her arms around him a little tighter than necessary. Cold... She thought with delight.

However, that delight was as pale as Leth compared to the feeling of ground beneath her feet as he hoisted her off his shoulder. Focused on the creature before her she wasn't aware of the copious stares that echoed hers keeping others at a skeptical distance.

His long furred tail dangled above the ground large gossamer wings stuttering through the air. Dark maroon, they were the colour of clouds at sunset on the Sea of Grass. Not catching his words Jaye threw her arms around the mans shoulders before she could wonder at the appropriateness of the action.

"Thank you. Thank you so much." She whispered past his ear hugging him tightly her body shaking from the rush of adrenaline and fear that was fleeing her body slowly.

Everything she did stunned him. From the way she looked at him with wonder rather than fear to the way her hair scattered wildly in the breeze, he couldn't believe that she was real. Just when Cal was sure she couldn't possibly shock him anymore, she hugged him.

Cal stood stiff as a stone, hardly feeling her arms wrapped so delicately around him. He was hyper-aware of the stares when she whispered in his ear.

"Thank you. Thank you so much."

Why isn't she afraid? She should be running, screaming, something! I'm a freak of nature. I touched her and carried her without her permission. I...saved her?

And with that single thought, the gravity of the situation hit Calters at full speed. The Akvatari burst to life and gripped her tightly, trying his best to steady her shaking body. He was still convinced that she would soon realize her mistake and push him away.

Until she did, he was determined to hold her. For now, it was all okay.

He shared these sentiments with her. "It's okay. You're safe."

It was unclear who was to be comforted by the words. Perhaps both of them were to some degree. The Gods knew that Calters needed reassuring. As extra protection, Calters moved his quivering wings so that they wrapped around his body in a thin curtain. "Everything's okay."

He certainly didn't want to, but eventually he pushed on her shoulders to separate them. All work around the pair had either slowed or stopped as passerby gawked- at the winged and tailed man or the panicked woman he couldn't be sure.

Cal's attention was captured as he inspected the Sculpted Woman. She didn't seem to be harmed, and for that he sent a silent thanks to the Gods. Her face was pale, although he hadn't yet seen her at a time when she wasn't terrified. For all he knew, that was her natural color. The Sculpture's muscles were shaking, but that was to be expected from such an encounter.

Cal did his best to joke, but felt his face wobble into a frown as he spoke.

His arms tightened around her as firm and reassuring as the pillars that held up the Drykas Pavilions.

"It's okay. You're safe." He assured her, "Everything's okay."

She never wanted to let go of the seal man. She didn't trust the strength of her legs, however he had obviously had enough of the affection and shoved her away gently. Blushing as she realized the inappropriately extreme action Jaye gazed at the man more thoroughly now as her heart finally slowed.

His hair was wispy, as if whispers grasped at the end of each tendril pulling them from his skull. Gently tanned skin, slightly fainter than her own shone bronzed before her. A grey blonde furred tail extended from his abdomen downward begging her to touch it like a horses coat begged the touch of a child.

His expressions wobbled on the edge of despair at all times making her eyebrows crinkle slightly with confusion. "I would stay away from those ladders for awhile if I were you. Heights don't seem to be doing you much good."

Smirking wryly at the comment Jaye nodded gently, "T-thanks, I will try...someone like you would be much more useful here than I would." She added light heartedly, smiling faintly at the man before her. By this time her partner had gathered her wits enough to approach Jaye and place a hand on her shoulder.

"Are you alright?" She worried keeping half an eye on the seal man.

"Y-yah.." Jaye assured moving away from the strangers touch, "I-I think I just need a rest, away from the sun." She described looking forward to the languid coolness of a beer...or two.

"I'm Jaye Feathered Fetlock of the Opal Clan," She offered a hand slowly clasping his large cold hand. "Can I take you out for a beer?" She glanced at the seal man, "As a thank you." She explained. Her legs were only beginning to come under her control and her hands had only begun to cease shaking. There would be no more climbing on ladders today.

Synas tendrils danced across the top of her head and shoulders making her dizzy in the brilliant heat and she was sure that both she and he could use the brilliant cold liquid.

It was a wonderful suggestion. He couldn't deny that. Calters was ready for a beer any day, especially with Syna's light baking him against the hot ground and the rush of adrenaline still pounding through his body. It would calm his nerves, cool him down, and buy him time with his newest acquaintance.

And to top it all off, he would be able to admire her for just a moment longer. She wasn't exotic or extravagant as some of the Inarta or Konti women were, but that was what made her special. She didn't attract any attention to herself, even though she deserved it. Jaye was humble, as far as he could tell, and that single trait popped his usually angry bubble. The vain musician felt his insides weaken when she smiled, although he tried his best to keep up his hard-nosed act.

Jaye Feathered Fetlock of the Opal Clan... He couldn't quite recall what the Opal Clan was known for, but he supposed he would learn that soon enough. Perhaps she would tell him all about the Sea of Grass, which he so badly wanted to travel someday. Or the way the Drykas moved and rode so magnificently. Hai, he even wanted to know why she left and what she was doing here. There was no end to the questions he had about his Sculpted Woman.

When he heard the thought bounce nonchalantly through his head, (his Sculpted Woman?) Cal wasted no time in correcting himself.

Her name is Jaye. She is not mine. We are going for a beer 'as a thank you'.

Keeping this in his mind like a mantra, Calters looked into Jaye's plain brown eyes and accepted.
"I'm Calters, or Cal if you're short on time. A beer sounds wonderful, as long as you can take off from your work for a tick. I'd hate to steal you away." Cal gave her a smile, still as forced as all his were.

Negativity hissed inside his skull like steam rising from boiling water. You aren't funny. She doesn't like you, she's just being polite. You might as well give up now. Let her return to what she was doing and be done with it.

For once, Cal didn't listen to himself. In contrast, he shrugged it off and opened his arms, gesturing all around him dramatically.
"Do you have any particular place in mind, Ms. Fetlock? We have all of Riverfall to choose from!"
