Race: Kelvic / Raccoon
Birthday and Age: 1.5 yrs / 19 human equivalent: 508 AV
Gender: Male

Physical Description:

Human – In his human form, Brig is five feet, eleven inches tall and weighs an average of one hundred and sixty-five pounds. He has an athletic, medium build, an interesting face if not a classically sculpted one, expressive features, a mop of unruly black curls and dark amber eyes. Apart from an unusual favored diet and table manners that tend to give him away as not quite human, his canine teeth are slightly elongated and more sharpened than the norm.

Raccoon – In his true Kelvic form, Brig is a large raccoon nearly thirty inches long, not including his tail, and weighs twenty to thirty-five pounds depending on the season and the availability of food. Where his coat isn’t black in the case of his distinct bandit’s mask, stripes on his tail or other markings, or white at the tips of his ears, he’s overall more dark cinnamon than gray or brindle. He’s as often up on his hindquarters as on all four, and is at home in streams and ponds as on land, up a tree as secreted away inside a hollow log, stony crevice or somebody’s attic, or hunting in the wilds as rummaging through a city dweller's larder, cellar or grain bin. While he's primarily colorblind saving for a increased appreciation for shades of green, his vision is measurably enhanced at twilight or in the dark of night.

Character Concept:

While all too happy to play the clown and talkative entertainer, Brig in both of his forms is a naturally intuitive, and determined problem solver. He shies away from complex ciphering, and can hardly read or write. But with unique sensory advantages that are constants to both forms, give him a puzzling contraption or scenario and he won’t stop until he solves it, or sometimes breaks it. He’s good natured in general and even gregarious at times, but can turn suddenly ferocious when cornered or in defense of someone he cares about. He's bold and loyal to a fault. Following events which recently left him genuinely alone for the first time in his life, his generally optimistic outlook is interrupted now and again by moments of sadness and a deep sense of loneliness.

Brig’s is a shaky grasp when it comes to the concepts of modesty, society’s rules or constraints. Or even those of the various laws of the land. He’s a natural born thief. He understands in theory that others tend to frown on the secreting away of another’s belongings. But in spite of a nature that means no harm or foul, the Kelvic has consistently failed to embrace the concept in practice. The compulsive habit is mildly redeemed by the fact that what he takes, or attempts to, is often worth little to nothing at all.

Character History: Pre-Play

Brig was born in the shadow of Lhavit, the rare Kelvic result of a mating between a brown bear Kelvic father and an ordinary human mother. Presumably even rarer, the union produced fraternal twins. Though it soon became apparent that while Brig was born a Kelvic, his twin sister Laire was not, but an ordinary human instead. It was an affectionate enough union between the twin’s mother and father, yet there was no marriage and the relationship was short lived. With little interest in a sedentary life, their father was soon gone. Wandered off towards the northern lights. Never seen again, never knowing of the impending birth, or that one would be a Kelvic like himself.

Left alone to raise her children on a small farm passed down to her from her own parents, Brig’s mother supported the twins by baking, taking in sewing and providing vegetables from her gardens or eggs produced from her crowded coops to nearby neighboring families. It was a rather idyllic childhood, and Brig spent as much time in his true animal form as his human one.

But while his sister aged as any other human baby would, Brig grew quickly and delighted in entertaining her with his antics. And when left to his own devices, frustrated his mother by succumbing to his more intuitive urges…which led to more than one midnight raid on her chicken coops, resulting in nesting boxes emptied of eggs the next morning.

As he began to mature he increasingly spent more time out in the forests in his true form, growing and hunting, roaming the forests and disappearing for days or even weeks at a time before wandering home again. And yet the bond between Brig and his family, in particular with his baby sister Laire, remained strong. The talents that came most naturally to him, most instinctually through his raccoon form, were schooled and encouraged in his human one during any number of interactions with passing vagabonds, tinkerers or during visits in nearby settlements. And all the while, the areas he roamed began to expand. And his visits to home and family became less frequent.

It was after one of these long absences that Brig returned to find the family’s farm, with its house and outbuildings, burned to the ground and still smoldering on cold and foggy morning. Most of the animals were gone, having escaped during the night and only a few scattered chickens had remained behind. Brig couldn’t begin to guess the cause of the fire, but his hopes that his mother and sister had escaped unharmed were short lived. After a desperate search, he found both of them dead inside the charred remains of the house, Laire clutched tight to his mother’s breast. The only salvageable belonging he managed to find, was a ragdoll which had belonged to Laire, tattered already but now damaged by smoke and flames.

Whether the fire was accidental, caused by some sort of natural occurrence or set by brigands or thieves, Brig was never able to tell. But if they’d been thieves, they’d not been thorough ones. From beneath the ruins of the barn, he was able to retrieve the small metal box that his mother had kept secreted underneath the wooden boards. It contained the mizas that Brig’s father had left her to make something of before he’d wandered off, and more she’d managed to save since. She'd kept it for her children, for unpredictable times. But now there was only Brig, and nowhere in particular to go.

He spent the remainder of the day burying his mother and sister. And the next morning after remaining through the night in the nearby forest, he took only the mizas, the doll and the belongings that he’d had with him before, and set off to find his own way with no real direction, genuinely alone for the first time in his life.
