Birth Place: Riverfall, Cyphrus

Current Location: Black Rock, Falyndar

Employment Information
Occupation: Bard

Employer: Pending

Wages: 4 gm/day

Duties: No matter where he may be employed, Alzaren does his best to entertain any sort of crowd with both his musical instrument (the lute) and his own voice. Most of the songs he plays are from the past and other songwriters, though some are of original make.

Physical Information
Age: 32

Race: Akalak

Gender: Male

Height: 6’2”

Weight: 185 lbs

Appearance

Donning dark red flesh over his entire configuration, Alzaren automatically stands out from the usual blue skins of the Akalak race. Gold amber eyes are his most dominant feature however, standing out in darkness and gifted with the infravision of his race. Much of his body, like all Akalaks, is finely-toned and well-muscled, making him a physical specimen. Only peaking at six feet and two inches makes him far on the shorter side of his race though, and this is one of the many reasons he decided to give up the art of physical combat. Alzaren, to say at least, is quite handsome in a grisly type of manner. Long black hair streams down between his shoulder blades and falls over the front of his collarbones. Stubble lines his angular jaw line and his nearly unnoticeable cheekbones.

Personality

As the result of never really fitting in with the society of Akalaks in Riverfall, Alzaren (light brother) is an individual that doesn’t enjoy much conflict at all. Any combat-based encounters are not within his domain, and since most of his battle-orientated abilities are focused around Djed, Zainkrin (dark brother) is usually released during the use of his reimancy powers. As a kind-hearted soul however, Alzaren does his best to keep the ill-tempered and often malicious Zainkrin at bay during any instance of time other than using reimancy, and as thus, is often mentally exhausted and willing to fall in bed and instantly fall asleep at the end of any given day.

Due to his father’s strict and condescending attitude toward him as a warrior, Alzaren was mostly raised by his Konti mother, and as such, has much respect for women unlike most Akalaks. Like his mother, Alzaren is benevolent, warm-hearted, slightly timid in social interactions (other than the playing of his lute and performances of his singing), and generous.

While it is uncharacteristic for him to take place in physical combat, Alzaren is very brave and willing to put his body at risk at the benefit of others. Despite his lack of tenacity in the Akalak race, Alzaren is still very capable of defending himself physically against other races, and as such, has a sense of a protector over those he cares for.

Beliefs

Alzaren’s Konti mother, as a devout follower of Ivak, placed her love and devotion for the powerful god into the mind of Alzaren at a young age. While Alzaren did not truly fall into the faith of the god of emotions and fire, Zainkrin did. As the sibling soul that has the most control over the Djed of the Akalak body in which he was born, Zainkrin’s adoration for pyromancy led him into the belief system of Ivak. Alzaren, on the other hand, continued to pray to Ivak because of his values of passion and powerful emotions, which spoke heavily to the young mind of Alzaren. Zainkrin revered the destruction that Ivak caused to the world while Alzaren believed that Ivak was an entity who brought balance.

Other than Ivak, Alzaren found himself mesmerized by the principles and values of Rhaus, the god of music. As Alzaren began to appreciate music more and more as he aged, an inner conflict of the mind grew between Alzaren and Zainkrin. The dark brother, Zainkrin, wanted to pledge the entirety of his mind and body to the faith of Ivak, while Alzaren wanted to pray to Ivak and Rhaus simultaneously and equally.

Gnosis: Marks of the Gods

Azenth

After arriving at the Island of the Dead and performing much-needed training in order to climb the peak of Black Rock, Alzaren came into contact with the god of flames and emotion at the summit of the mountainous spire. After the encounter, an emblem of three intertwined strands of golden-orange flame, much like Alzaren's eyes, formed on his left forearm.

Full Gnosis Story :
It had been a year since his arrival upon the island, since his casting out by his father and the Akalak society of Riverfall. It had been a year of guilt and regret as Alzaren mourned his mother’s death. It was his fault. His father would have never put another child into the womb of his mother if it were not for his failure to become a warrior of the Akalak people. If he had succeeded, his mother would not have had to die giving birth to her second son.

His golden amber eyes flared with life at the remembrance of his worst sin in this world. He had failed his family and, in turn, forced his mother to lose her life. Lathered in sweat, Alzaren climbed the Peak of Black Rock with nothing more than mountaineering tools. He had prayed to Ivak before the hands of sleep conquered him every night since he had left Riverfall, both on the ship and when he arrived on the island itself. When he was stricken with grief, he would play his lute and fall into the loving arms of Rhaus’ principles, but he did this solely for his mother and her devout following of Ivak. He had loved her more than anyone else in this world, and he planned to honor her name.

With a passion so akin to the emotional standing of Ivak, Alzaren struggled to climb the volcanic summit, his fingers bleeding and his entire flesh caked in grime and soot. His black hair was matted to his skin, his eyes burned with perspiration, and his lips quivered and trembled as they desired water. As Alzaren placed his foot on another rock-hold and looked up, he saw the lip of the peak. He saw his redemption for everything he had done wrong in Riverfall.

Clutching his mother’s Aventhian amulet in his left hand, the red-skinned Akalak that was Alzaren gritted his teeth and groaned loudly, providing his body with enough strength to reach the top. When his right hand grasped the lip of the summit, tears appeared in his golden orbs, washing away the dirt and sweat as he pulled the rest of his beyond weary configuration onto the rocky peak.

He laid there for a while, looking up at the dark clouds that hovered over Dira’s domain. Alzaren knew this land no longer belonged to Ivak, but this volcano, in some form, had to be connected to the god of fire and emotion. If it wasn’t, everything he had worked for would be worthless. He would be a shell of what he strived to be. He wanted this; he needed this.

Standing afoot as apathetic as possible, the winds of the great summit of Black Rock coursed through Alzaren’s long black hair, forcing it from its sweat-matted position along his skin. The Akalak meandered forward, placing his forearm in front of his eyes to block away the rushing winds of ash. He came before the rim of the volcano, and he looked down.

Deep down in the abyss of the mountain, just as any dormant volcano, blackness conquered. There was nothing significant about this place. Perplexity was apparently stamped across the Akalak's countenance. He had imagined a weight to be lifted from his chest, or for some sign of Ivak to appear to show him that what he had performed wasn’t all for nothing. But just as his fears had come, they were gone, for as a few chimes passed, a great steam rose from the darkness below, its heat causing Alzaren to sweat profusely.

The steam exploded into fire, causing Alzaren to take a step back and shield his eyes. The light nearly blinded him, and the Djed that surged through the area tingled every part of Alzaren’s articulation. A few ticks passed, and Alzaren finally drew the nerve to lower his arm.

At that moment, he saw him. He saw the World Destroyer, the Balancer, the God of Fire, the Ruler of Emotions. He saw Ivak.

A voice within Alzaren spoke profoundly, but Ivak’s lips did not move. “I have heard your prayers for a long while now, Akalak,” the god spoke, his voice echoing in Alzaren’s mind for what seemed like an eternity. The red-skinned Akalak could only look on in utter awe at the spectacle, and he needed not to talk. His actions had brought him this far. “You have come to a land foreign to you, and have come to a land that is no longer even under my domain, yet you continued on. You and your soul sibling continued for your faith in me, and you continued for your mother, and the many prayers she sent my way. You have acquired my attention, Akalak.”

With that, the fire blasted into an inferno once more, eventually dying into smoke. At the moment of Ivak’s disappearance, a pain struck the bottom of Alzaren’s left forearm, causing him to fall to his knees and clutch the agonized area. He winced and groaned as his eyes fell upon the arm. A multitude of flaming tendrils coursed down the forearm, their hue being that of a bright gold-orange, much like Alzaren's eyes.

As the mark settled and Alzaren’s eyes lifted to look where the god had revealed himself, he saw only the lifting black smoke that soon vanished amidst the winds and dark clouds above. Tears surfaced in his eyes once more as he began to sob, thinking of his mother and hoping that, with Ivak’s blessing, she had forgiven him.

History

Traveling to Riverfall at a young age, Arora—Alzaren’s Konti mother—enjoyed the notion of protection that she would garner from the hundreds, if not thousands, of Akalak warriors stationed in the city of Cyphrus. It was an extensive journey from the Konti Isle, but it was worth it when she met Rhaegos—Alzaren’s father—and had child with him.

After a long pregnancy, Alzaren was born and Arora survived, though she was sick for multiple weeks. As the young Alzaren began to grow, Rhaegos immediately, like most Akalak fathers, attempted to insert his son into the warrior life of a normal Akalak. While it took Alzaren almost fifteen years to figure out he was a mediocre fighter at best, Rhaegos realized his son was inept in the field of physical battle from day one of training. Even though Alzaren was quite talented with cardio and other aspects of fitness, he did not have the technique and will to become a warrior.

When Alzaren reached the age of fifteen, he was forced, beyond his own desire, to partake in the Rite of Trial to take down a Glassbeak in the Sea of Grass along with other Akalak boys his age. While his team succeeded, Alzaren did nothing to aid his youthful comrades, and as such, was judged and bullied by others of his age. Alzaren was small and frailer than most Akalaks, and unlike many of them, had no true yearning for combat and the kill. Because of this, during his Rite of Trial, he was severely injured by the Glassbeak, leaving him with scars upon his lower abdomen from the vicious pecks of the creature.

Ridiculing him beyond mental repair when Alzaren returned, Rhaegos’ fury drove him into the loving and caring arms of his mother, Arora. Rhaegos, in seeing that his son had no warrior spirit and had no skill whatsoever in the art of war, forced another pregnancy onto Alzaren’s mother. During the pregnancy of his future borther, Arora taught Alzaren the basics of reimancy and the prayer of Ivak. These new lessons, with Alzaren knowing he would soon be forced from the domains of Riverfall due to his lack of completion of the Rite of Trial, brought a new mindset to the Akalak youth.

Arora, when Alzaren was eighteen years of age, initiated the Akalak into the art of reimancy. Carving ritualistic wounds into the palms of either hand of Alzaren, the Konti mother began producing a gas form of Res. The gas invaded Alzaren’s body, seeping into the wounds, his nose, and his mouth. The feeling was nearly indescribable in Alzaren’s opinion; it was almost like thousands of small creatures had crawled into his body, their hands pressing against every inch of skin and every organ in his anatomy. Eventually, the experience ended though, and Arora continued her teaching of reimancy to the young Akalak in more practical manners. The first and primary element that Alzaren has used since his initiation is fire, and as such, respects Ivak as much as his mother.

During time where Alzaren wasn’t learning reimancy mother and he was avoiding his father as Arora reached the final terms of her pregnancy, the young Akalak ventured to the many taverns in Riverfall, the strange sounds of instruments entering and pounding against his ear drums for the first time. From the very first moment Alzaren heard his first musical note and his first tune, he instantly fell in love with everything about it: the emotions it influenced, the rhythm and discipline it required that was so akin to the ways of the Akalaks, and the beauty of it all.

After many days of attending performances of Akalak bards in the local inns and taverns of Riverfall, Alzaren acquired his own instrument—the lute. He adored the workmanship of the instrument from the beginning, and even began to sing during his own private time in the evenings. He brought up the subject of music in one of his reimancy lessons with his mother, and she explained the lore of Rhaus and everything he stood for to Alzaren. As the god of music, Alzaren fell in love with the idea of Rhaus, and began to pray to both him and Ivak.

With the birth of Alzaren’s new brother Rioken, Arora died, her body not being able to bear yet another Akalak birth. Rhaegos, with a strict hatred of Alzaren for his lack of ability to become a warrior (thus placing the blame of his mother’s death on him), drove Alzaren from Riverfall, for he had no social status among other Akalaks.

Not knowing where to go once exiled from Riverfall, Alzaren decided to journey to Black Rock, the Island of the Dead. He knew, from his mother’s teachings, that the island had once been a domain of Ivak due to its prominent volcano, but now resided within the reign of Dira and her lifeless minions. As a symbol of respect for her mother and her devout following of Ivak, Alzaren took up a fare in a ship sailing from Riverfall to Black Rock. On the seven day journey to the island, each night Alzaren prayed to Ivak and each night he played his lute to block out the grief, guilt, and regret that pained his heart.

Upon reaching the island, Alzaren took up residence in a cottage at the base of the peak of Black Rock and planned his climb for a year. He had to reach the volcanic summit and to address Ivak himself on his mother’s regard.

After doing so, Alzaren has lived on Black Rock for a second year, making him 32 years of age. He has been trying his best to settle into a place where he has found forgiveness for his failures in the past.

During the days of his childhood in Riverfall, Alzaren was gifted a Sunstone Amulet from his Konti mother Arora. It is valuable to the Akalak both in a sentimental and monetary aspect. The amulet was his mother's since her childhood when she first became a devout follower of Ivak. Now Alzaren wears it, both to represent his faith of Ivak and as a remembrance of his mother.

Housing

Alzaren currently resides in a single room, 20 x 20 cottage at the base of the peak of Black Rock. The house, like all simple single room cottages, contains a hearth, a bunk, a chest, a chair, and a small table. Most of Alzaren's possessions remain here.
