.
33rd of Fall, 514av
It was raining. Khara had heard grumblings about it in the warrens before she even got close to the Sanikas Gates. She had waited patiently, feet shuffling while praying Azira wouldn't come calling on her. Not that she didn't want that as well, but Khara had plans of her own for a change. So when the huntress didn't show, the Chiet game scout had quickly returned to her room to drop off her bedroll and blanket and scooped up the colorful bundle of cloth that had sat ready for several days. The opportunity to test out her theory of marking important areas as she tracked was something she had looked forward to ever since she had come up with the idea. Gaining the fabric had taken time, then deciding on meanings had been actually far more complicated than Khara had ever anticipated it being, but now? Now she was ready.

As she approached the gates there seemed to be a slightly larger crowd than usual, hunters and others who were hesitant to step into the cold rain of Fall. With a sigh she tightened the ruby colored scarf around her neck and pulled up the hood of her katinu before nudging her way through those gathered, a slew of apologies left in passing.

There had been plenty of reports of animal activity in the area, most out past the Forward Camps in the The Unforgiving and few scouts were chosen to accompany the Endals and lucky Avora but most had resigned themselves to the more mundane tasks of acting as a second set of eyes for hunters willing to make use of them. Khara had been left to her own devices that day, which meant she could follow up on a far more interesting prospect. Rumors had spread among the game scouts of several groups of takin that had been entering the area the last few days, though only one small herd had been found so far. Although there were already others heading out to see if the rumors were true, Khara was fairly certain they would be following up on supposed closer sightings, what she had planned was a bit more adventurous.

The walk south in the direction of the Vine Forest took Khara a little over two bells, the time seeming even longer in the constant steady downpour. Thankfully the sightings hadn't been within the Forest itself. Khara wasn't certain what sorts of dangers were within, but the stories of the so-called Moonlight Escape just beyond were more than enough to give the Chiet reason to avoid the place, at least while on her own. She could remember the directions she had been told clearly: take the pass towards the Vine Forest, go below the tree line, and then east when you come to the landslide from several seasons back. Directions weren't exactly easy to figure with the clouds covering the sun, but one of the more seasoned scouts even had a tip for that: Moss grows on the north side of trees. There had been some argument among the older scout and several of the younger ones about how that wasn't always true, but the general consensus still seemed to be that if most trees in the area only had moss on one side, it was most likely north. Most likely wasn't entirely comforting, but it was better than nothing when the sun was obscured.

As Khara neared the area she began paying more attention to the trees. She knew she had come south from Wind Reach, so that gave at least some sense of direction, and sure enough while it wasn't always true, the moss she saw did seem to have a tendency to grow on the northern side of things, trees included. The landslide was easily enough spotted, less slide and more of a piece of mountainside that had come apart and crumbled to the valley below, flattening trees in the process. The pass continued on but it wasn't before too long that she saw a trail that seemed to head off into the sparse trees opposite the cliff side. She couldn't tell if it was from previous hunts or possibly a game trail just by sight, but it seemed to head east and that was good enough for her.

The girl hurried under he slight covering a tree offered out of the rain and her backpack was slid from her shoulders and opened. A bit of rummaging had to be done as items had settled during her trip, but it wasn't long before Khara tugged the bundle of fabric strips to the top of the contents. A single blue piece of linen was pulled free and held between her teeth briefly as she closed her backpack and settled it back into it's proper place. The fabric was then tied to a branch of the tree she was under, clearly in sight from the pass itself.

"Well, that's a start", she spoke softly to herself, the ongoing rain practically drowning out the sound of her voice even to her own ears. Still, Khara couldn't contain the smile as she returned to the trail and cast a glance back at the piece of blue fabric that was darkening as it became sodden. Still visible. Perfect!

Trails and Colors

The further the trail wound away from the main road the more Khara was convinced it was created by animal rather than Inarta. The ground was free of foliage save for only the smallest of new growth, that too appeared to have been trampled upon recently though it was hard to tell if the matted appearance was due to passing hooves or the day's pounding rain. Small tufts of soaked wool and hair littered the bushes that ran next to the trail. Khara paused to tug some free from a particularly stubborn thorny bush but whether it was from some sort of wild sheep, goat, or the supposed takin she couldn't tell. Either way, it was clear game had passed through at some point at least.

The suspicion was only further confirmed by scattered small piles of droppings that seemed to indicate deer. Maybe elk? Goats as well? Khara let out a small sigh at her lack of specific knowledge - yet another thing to see about reading up on in The Enclave. Too many different animals all produced the small pellet-like scatt, it seemed. At least it's not rabbit, Khara thought for a moment and allowed herself a slight and quiet laugh as her mind started trying to conjure the image of a rabbit large enough to leave such things. The Inarta girl let her eyes raise and look towards the south - or, at least what she thought was the south - to where the Escape was with it's strange Djed altered animals and landscape. Okay, maybe giant rabbits aren't so impossible after all. She forced herself to push aside the thought as she continued onward, keeping to the clear worn path.

The heavy rain seemed to have removed any traces of prints, not something Khara was particularly happy for, but at the same time it did provide for a decent learning experience, she supposed. At least the trail was easily enough followed, that was, until it came to a bit of a clearing in the brush. There seemed to be two different directions it split off in if the trampled-looking grass and other plants were to go by. The rain may have been heavy enough for some of the appearance, but as she crouched down to inspect some smaller plants Khara was highly doubtful that the weather had managed to snap and crush leaves and limbs. She tried to push some of the soaked grass aside to get a better look at the ground underneath but it would take a great deal of searching to try and find anything. Even a look behind her barely showed any evidence of her own crossing save for where rather stubborn blades of short grass were springing back up after her feet had passed over them.

Petching rain, she thought to herself bitterly before her eyes widened and a glance was cast up towards the sky from under the hood of her katinu. "Sorry," she offered sheepishly, even if the rain was more steady than the turbulent storms that had marked Zulrav's presence in Wind Reach the Winter prior. No, there was probably someone else to blame for this steady oppressive onslaught of water, but Khara couldn't exactly recall which deity it was. Another small apology was offered in a quick prayer just to be safe.

With no real other option in mind she set out on the left most path first, gaze continually roaming to try and spot any telltale signs of animal's passing. After a handful of chimes, however, the possible trail went cold, the grasses and another plants flattening out less and less and more due to obvious burden of the storm's gifts than anything else. With a sigh she headed back the way she came until she met back where the game trail had split off. A second look at the other direction compared with the way she had first followed did seem to be a bit more distinct now that she really looked at it.

A quick drink from her water skin was taken as she paused between the two. If there were more areas like this it would be easy to forget which was left and which was right, especially if she ended up with a particularly abrasive hunter who didn't exactly have patience with the scout's memory. Another piece of blue fabric was retrieved from her pack as she tried to decide how best to mark her meaning. Go right seemed like such a simple thing to think of but actually showing was different. The nearest tree was off to the left which didn't exactly serve her purpose if she was going to stick with her blue markers meaning she was on the right path. The bushes nearby in either direction would work, but it didn't seem right to her. While Khara had felt fairly certain nothing would come along and snatch away the one she had tied to the tree at first, the bushes seemed to have enough traffic rubbing against them that whatever she tied it to may become damaged and break off. That wouldn't do, especially if something prevented her from being able to come back the next day.

A soft hum left her as she studied her surroundings and a small thought came to her. The outer most branches would be in danger, yes. But the center? Khara decided on which bush she would use and walked back down the trail a ways before turning back to it to get a better view. She tucked the piece of fabric into a pocket of her katinu before tugging her hunting knife free from where she had secured it at her side. A steady walk was taken back to the bush before she began cutting away pieces of it until she could clearly get to the middle most section. The blue strip of fabric was secured around the thick portion of the bush and she stepped back down the trail again and judged how well she could see it. The brightness of the fabric certainly helped and the portion of the bush she had cut away left it visible from several angles. Once she got to where the trail separated she made sure she could still clearly see the blue strip of fabric within the bush, cutting away a few more pieces that blocked it.

She wasn't certain it was the best method, but Khara would no doubt find out how well it worked later when she retraced her steps back to the road. With a bit of luck, the day after as well would finish the test when she returned with a hunter for the game she would hopefully find today. As much as she was using the day to test her system, the ever present thought of needing to be successful in her tracking loomed over her.
