Brief History:

Akai is ignorant of her heritage, as she was abandoned on the Sea of Grass shortly after birth. She was raised by the elderly Drykas old woman, Svedra, who found her purely by chance while scavenging for animals to use in creating a talisman. Her early childhood revolved around the daily workings of the sweet old woman as she went about her duties to her family within the tent city of Endrykas. The old old woman regularly made remedies and crafting everyday items needed for horse riding. These held little interest for Akai, and she would find any excuse to run off and play with the other Drykas children. However, the old womans stories of ghosts and the power laying dormant in the bones of animals fascinated Akai. At the age of seven, her continued curiosity led the old woman to begin instructing her in the arts of Malediction and Spiritism. The training was difficult, and often tried Akai's patience, as she had the average attention span of any 7 year old. She learned quickly, absorbed what Svedra spoke, but due to the unpredictable nature of Malediction and potential malignant intent of spirits, she was not given opportunities to practice the craft she learned.

Each year as Endrykas made is year transition through the Sea of Grass, Akai only put in as much effort as was absolutely necessary into horseback riding and the other duties of young Drykas girls were expected to know. As the years grew, this began putting distance between Akai and the other Drykas children in the pavilion, whom primarily wanted to ride and learn the trades of their heritage. The developing detachment Akai began to feel further drove her interest in her studies. At the age of Thirteen, Svedra brought Akai scavenging for ingredients for her to begin crafting talisman. Both of the women rode leisurely, idly gossiping and searching for animals suitable for crafting. At the time, Endrykas was at the North Eastern portion of its cycle through the prairies, Neither of Svedra, nor Akai noticed a few horsemen whom had taken to following the pair on their slow meandering journey. Within an hour the horsemen initiated an ambush on the pair. Svedra and Akai slammed their heels into the sides of their mounts, but Akai's horsemanship was lacking, resulting in their eventual capture.

The men roughly bound the two woman, then took the reins of their horses and set off. The men pushed hard, and AKai found herself falling from her horse twice. The first time she received a harsh kick from one of her captors, the second, she was lashed to her horse to prevent any delays. Although the men knew nothing of the web which tied the old woman to the rest of the Drykas, they knew of the Drykas' uncanny ability to intercept those bandits who entered the Sea of Grass with ill intent. the following evening, the group finally stopped to rest. They crossed the border of Cyphrus and Sylira at midnight. Their captors were in a foul mood due to the strain they suffered, but believed they were far enough from any Drkas guards to sleep soundly. A week later, the group arrived at a slaver camp. Svedra and Akai were quickly separated into separate enclosures.

The camp remained stationary for two days following. The majority of the slavers remained indifferent to their captors, but would not hesitate to retaliate with violence at perceived slights or misbehavior. After the last of the raiding groups arrived, the camp was torn down and the long march to Sunberth. Akai's exposure to the Drykas' culture, she eventually managed to untie the skillful knots holding her to the ropes around her wrists. Despite her opportunity to escape, Akai needed to find Svedra, and did her best to sneak through the caravan to find her. The other groups of slaves ended up bringing her freedom to the attention of the slave masters, as those who recognized the fact she should also be restrained begged her to release them as well. Akai did end up finding Svedra further back in the caravan, and rushed into her arms before beginning to work on the knots holding her to other women of similar age. Akai screamed out in surprise and pain as a strong hand grabbed onto her long hair and cruelly pulled. She fell to the ground and was pounced on, and smacked by armored hands before three men pulled her to her feet by her dirty clothing. One of the men pulled a dagger from his belt, and held it menacingly to her throat. Instead of becoming complacent to the men, Akai instictually grabbed the man on either side of his head before pushing her thumbs into his eyes.

Her captor dropped the dagger, and fell back with his hands over his eyes. Another one drew his one weapon, raising it and plunging it towards her heart. Luckily for Akai, the hand was stopped by a tall, lean man. His eyes were cold and uncaring. He spoke plainly about the value of vicious recruits and how impressionable the young were. Akai's attentions were more directed to the adrenaline and Svedra's begging on her behalf. The man Akai assaulted, whom she would soon learn was called Gurk, was now on his feet and retrieved his weapon, We was furious, faced the man with the cold eyes and demanded retribution to be taken out of Akai's hide. After a moment of thought, his leader denied him his request, and instead encouraged Gurk to take out his fury on Svedra. He did, and ended up taking Svedra's life as he vented his fury against her.

The cold eyed man placed the training and conditioning of Akai into the hands of Gruk. over the following 2 years, Akai found her life to resemble a living hell. Gruk took an active interest in beating, and humiliating her. Her combat training was more of a baptism of fire, as Gruk would simply take a log waiting for the fire and charge her. If she was unable to hold against his relentless assault, Gruk would only pull his strikes enough to avoid breaking bones. Gruk was particularly cruel when drinking, which he was whenever they were residing at the main camp of the slavers.

Once Akai hit the age of 15, she participated in her first raid. Hate and resentment for the cards delt to her had significantly eroded her ethics, turning her into a vicious, and instinctual fighter. Although it corroded her conscious, Akai preformed well in an attack on a small caravan. After the battle, in which she successfully overwhelmed a total of three of the guards along side Gruk, She was officially considered a full fledged member of the slaving group. The following 4 years served to harden her. Slaving and killing no longer weighted on her soul. And although the humiliation and harsh conditioning from Gruk had stopped, his lingering eyes and snide remarks continued. Akai still feared and hated him, and would only threaten violence against him in extreme circumstances. She knew full well he could still kill her; however, she needed to project strength to keep the majority of slavers from attempting to take advantage of her.

A month before her 18th birthday, The slavers established a main camp some distance from Syliras. After a few weeks of sending small raiding parties to find vulnerable targets, the main camp was ambushed by the Sylrian Knights. The camp erupted into chaos as arrows fell into the camp. Akai rose quickly, grabbing her rusty axe and rushed from her tent. Knights rode into the camp from several different points, riding down fleeing raiders to her left and right. Akai joined the fray initially. She relied mostly on her speed and quick senses to trip steeds while they galloped, and jump from wagons or boxes to remove riders from their mounts. It didn't take long for Akai to realize the fight was hopeless. Scanning the remains of the camp, she was able to find a pack with basic survival needs, and began running for the tree line. Akai looked over her shoulder to ensure no one was in pursuit, and plowed into another person. She flew through him, knocking him onto his back while she rolled threw the impact. Instinctual, Akai took her axe, and brought the weapon down onto her assailants face. His skull caved from the axe strike. After a moment it dawned on her that she had just killed the slavers leader. She hesitated, knowing that if any of her comrades had seen her actions, then rejoining them would be out of the question. SHe would be lucky if they only killed her. She took out her knife, cut the pouch holding his gold Mizras, and bolted for the tree line a second time. However, instead of trying to find the remnants of her group, Akai continued running east. Sunberth would be a good place for her to find a new direction in life, she thought, as they would be more apt to employ someone with her "moral indiscretions."

Merits and Flaws:

Akai is a strong fighter, who is intelligent enough to recognize solutions, and amoral enough to take advantage of them no matter the method. Her fighting style is wild and ferocious, but lack discipline. Akai attempts to compensate for her lack of fighting technique by relentlessly targeting an opponents weaknesses. Such as breaking joints, blinding, backstabbing, or preemptively attacking her potential opponents. Akai's magic requires significant amounts of attention and preparation to preform. However, she uses malediction to create items to buff her natural traits such as speed or strength. She could turn her skill into a critical asset to any group, but lacks the discipline to accomplish this without oversight. Additionally, Akai is willing to take serious risks for good rewards, but lacks any respect for authority. Those she does respect will constantly have her evaluating them for signs of exploitable weakness, similar to a beta wolf looking for a chance to take leadership of a pack from the alpha.
