Character History

William was born an only child. His parents, Rebecca and Elden Thornwood, had been trying for a child for years and William came as a blessing to them. They treasured him, and for the early years of his life they lived in relative peace. His mother cared for horses and hunted while his father showed him how to craft wood. They would sit for hours carving arrows, or finding just the right pieces of wood for the next bow. Elden mostly made bows and arrows, but occasionally someone would ask him to fix a table or a carriage axle. William learned what he could, fascinated by the process of taking simple pieces of wood and transforming them into something new and useful. It didn’t take long for William to begin lending a hand around his father’s business, helping customers and recording payments. However his favorite work took place in his father’s workshop, crafting bows and arrows to stalk their shelves with.

The idyllic life William’s family had been living began taking a downward spiral when his father’s hands started shaking. Unable to work, and William not yet skilled enough to take his Elden’s place, they became dependent on his mother’s income to support them. They managed this life for several years, but it couldn’t last. His father was always falling deeper and deeper into a hole, or most nights a bottle. Rebecca wasn’t far behind, growing to hate and resent the man who would eat her food and spend her money. William wanted his father to take a different course, to quit drinking and to become the man he once was, but this was the real world. His father grew violent, and without a word to William, Rebecca stowed her belongings and disappeared. It took William four years to save what he needed to strike out on his own. Hiding the money from his father and working days and nights under every craftsmen who would have him as an apprentice. Now he William is on his own, determined to take a hold of his future.
