Appearance
--------------------------------------------------

Gybe at all times had the hair of a bear, rough and tough, wire-hard and bristly like a barnacle had spikes. Salt water was his conditioner and the waves his shampoo. Nuzem could be a force that swam behind the deep blue of his eyes. They had a darkness about them like the depths of the sea in a storm. With general demeanor of someone rather intellectual Gybe's appearance is very similar to that of the Nykans who had hair like night, ashen skin, and certain Vantha roots. He likewise had dark hair, had a similar appearance to the Vantha, but he did not boast of super pale skin. He actually had a slight tan to his skin, but it wasn't so surprising for how much he was shirtless when fishing, so for the most part he seemed very Nykan.

Nary a cloth dressed Gybe but pants when he worked, fishing in the quiet bay outside Nyka. On borrowed boat being in only pants it reminded him of the spray of the ocean and how the Svefra lived, not to mention it made him feel closer to the sea. He was a fisherman by trade only when work elsewhere was slow, mostly out of hobby, and he bore the fishy slime stained pants of one.

Few in night or early morning bells ever spoke to Gybe. With muscles that were tight and strong, he would bear his net to shore with silence. On the rare occasion some mornings when by himself in the bay, when out of the sight of others, he would wear coral shells and things not seen on beaches; shells from the deep, with blue and purple hues that would adorn his neck.
To the various superstitious gossipers who bothered to be concerned with the darkness that crept over his face during those times say a dark past haunts him that he only recalls then. If asked they don't know why they think that way, but say it's more of a feeling they had. If cornered during those darkened bells, he always seemed kind enough, but something about him made him seem to be a quiet man; almost sad or afar off and different than what he normally was. To the level-headed individual he was likely just a man who needed coffee when waking up and never got it.

During the day as opposed to early morning, it was a different story. When not sleeping in, Gybe was known to be about town. He's known to take an interest in his fellow man, to be a spirited lively lad who's penchant for having fun was rivaled by few. The monks seemed to like him well enough in his district, especially after alerting them one day to the presence of a weakness in their defenses. That event saved hundreds of lives over the last five years that he has been in town and put him rather on their 'good list'. For this reason Gybe no longer stays out in the temporary housing, but rather in the Mother City as a full bodied citizen.

While he is good and strong, he does not appear to be a fighter. Upon his right shoulder lies a mark of Laviku, though it moves occasionally, which for some they say he is a Svefra, but he denies it. He will always deny it, saying he received the mark because he has never caught more than he needs, and always has paid respects to the god of the Sea when going out and with his catch. This has become common knowledge when it comes to Gybe as it has been seen him doing so. Despite what people say, he maintains that he is human, born in Lhavit on the coast far to the west. His dress code is purely Nykan and not at all Svefra, fitting in all the more here than on the ocean it seems.

History
--------------------------------------------------

Very little is known of Gybe from before his arrival in Nyka. Coming in on ship they say he sold his boat, a battered beaten thing and moved into temporary housing. Nothing much was heard of him at all at first. A month had passed before he emerged from his room to say something to someone. In that time people had grown suspicious of him in the inn, saying a darkness hung over him. However when he finally emerged all that was put to shame. He quickly was seen as a friendly chap by the owners and some patrons. One such patron was Ciril Haversham, a local fisherman/vendor. He was befriended by Gybe and the young sailor was able to help out the elderly Ciril. They quickly became friends and the catch that Gybe could provide for him, made Ciril a force to be reckoned amongst his small bit of competitors. All of the other people who know things of his past, from the common thief to the monk who guards the docks in Nyka, know that he was born of those from Lhavit. Nothing else has really been inquired of him other than that as he has never really been in the eye of anyone important but tavern wenches and various monks in the five years he's been here. Image

Information for loyal Svefra Only: Gybe Galebringer, while not famous among the Svefra, may have been at least heard of before. They say he was a father to a little girl and something tragic happened in Nyka that caused the disappearance of not only her, but his pod and tavan. No-one knew for sure what it was, but it was said that they were never found.

After a day of searching, the officials of Nyka deemed it a lost cause. He continued his desperate search for her for months and seeking more information, he was stonewalled by the uncaring monks of the city. After repeated inquiries he was forcefully removed and told that essentially they must have deserved it.

The bristly haired Svefra fell and was defeated that day, but he swore his vengeance in his heart and to his people. He swore before Lavitku he would have his revenge upon the people and city of Nyka for their lacking compassion and care-free joviality. He swore he would use all his guile and strength to not rest till the people of the city felt his great pain. To put it simply, his tale is an encouragement to not trust the land-dwellers, and that a Svefra response, can a deadly response if pushed.

Character Concept/Personality
--------------------------------------------------

Gybe is a sailing maneuver in which a sailing vessel turned downwind bends its stern through the wind, so much so that the wind direction changes from one side of the boat to the other. This is the pure definition of the character Gybe. What that could only mean is however a mystery. Needless to say he has fulfilled the purpose of his name. He has yet to fulfill his last name, Galebringer; yet perhaps in the future this will come about.
