Birthplace: Ahnatep Appearance: Petra is a slender 5'10. She has the intense pale blue Benshira eyes from her father, but her skin is fair with just a hint of an olive complexion and a sheen that gives away her Eypharian heritage. Raised by her Eypharian mother in Ahnatep, she adopted the elaborate eye makeup popular amont that race and grew her hair to her mid-back. By hiding the sheen of her skin With clever makeup and a more modest fashion sense, she might pass as a pure human, or at least as Benshira, if no one looks closely. But she inherited the Eypharian haughtiness, and prefers sleeveless Eypharian dresses with open backs and a slit to within inches of her hip. Even as she knows Eypharians look down on her mixed origin, she secretly enjoys the awed stares from human men stunned by the expanses of lustrous skin bared an Eypharian gown. Meanwhile, she pointedly rejects the Eypharian false modesty of a collar, instead wearing her family heirloom necklace of fine chain. Occasionally, an Eypharian finds the sight of her bare neck provocative, but she usually pretends not to notice. She's been an outsider all her life and is happy to exaggerate her exotic looks to intimidate humans and other races, or to flaunt her mixed race to unsettle Eypharians. Character Concept Petra's mother, rejected by her Eypharian family, raised Petra to understand that they were a branch of a noble family within a noble race - and that her mother was outcast from a favored position as a royal concubine for conceiving a child of mixed parentage. As an adult, Petra suspects this is mostly a fantasy, that her mother's family were minor aristocrats in decline, if they were noble at all. Raised among the lower castes of Ahnatep, Petra is driven to return to the prestigious life of luxury she was told she deserves. Secretly aware that Eypharian nobility will never accept her this way, she is seeking opportunities to enrich herself outside the decayed Eypharian economy among less haughty trading partners. Character History Native to Ahnatep, Petra grew up outcast in a city driven by status. Unable to attend prestigious schools, she studied when she could on her own and worked with her mother producing and trading in jewels and cosmetics. Some customers were hangers-on to the royal court, expecting cheap prices from a vendor without pure Eypharian blood. Petra's limited education left her stumbling through the High Arumenic that pleased the wealthy and pretentious, and they never missed a chance to smirk at her mistakes. Soliciting these customers meant keeping on hand the luxuries they expected - rare wines, hors d'oeuvres. She was not just excluded from the extravagance and hedonism that animated Ahnatep's ruling class, her mother's business depended on catering to the appetite for delicacies and intoxicants driven by the ennui of the truly powerful. As she grew older and became aware of her exclusion from this life of consumption, she once threw a small party with friends from the streets using wine meant for customers. They drank themselves sick on a bottle that could have paid the rent on their apartment for weeks. Petra may have learned some of a jeweler's business, but she sometimes gives in to her craving for a sip of something finer. Much as she knows she'll regret the expense later, she needs to preserve her delusion that she is part of the city's upper crust. With mixed blood, she's an outcast in a city of pure Eypharians, and her conviction that she deserves a pure-blooded husband from that race seems unlikely to be fulfilled. Her romantic encounters to date have mainly been indiscretions with Eypharians intrigued by the scandal of taking a mixed lover. Like many from Ahnatep, she views seduction as entertainment, and occasionally enjoys using the power her allure gives her over humans, but would be appalled at the thought of carrying a full human's child.
