The Diamond of Kalea is located on Kalea's extreme west coast and called as such because its completely made of a crystalline substance called Skyglass. Home of the Alvina of the Stars, cultural mecca of knowledge seekers, and rife with Ethaefal, this remote city shimmers with its own unique light.

"So, congratulations are in order," Kystrel acknowledged, her fingers rapping against the surface of her desk, "you've successfully...outcompeted...so to speak, every other candidate. I expect you to pick your research topic within 10 days and for it to completed and accepted for publication in the library within two years." She explained, with her usual brevity. "I must say...I was impressed with your...competitive nature," She seemed to chuckle to herself.

"The job is a perfect way to serve Caiyha, I will do what is necessary to serve her the best way I know how." She explained, unconsciously appealing to her own competitive and uncompromising nature. While their desires were in sync they seemed to Himlitt a perfect pair, but his twitching eyebrows in the corner betrayed his anxiety. So long as they were in perfect stroke they could be a powerful duo...but as it was in research at some point they would be at odds. Two such uncompromising individuals at odds...it was a dangerous combination.

"I have already chosen my research topic. The landslide inspired me, I would like to research the effects of landslides on plant growth and succession. I can use both my burgeoning knowledge of geology to analyze earth and stone samples to see how the composition changes and it exposes subterranean organisms that appeals to my service of Caiyha," She explained, attempting to sell herself to the study.

"That sounds fine. You will write up the details of methodology for me by this time next season. Until then, you will learn how to conduct research and aid me in mine, specifically a subset of my research involving Lhavitian bats. It will take some time to learn about the scientific process enough to plan and write your own experiment and the techniques you learn while studying bats will give you some insight into the techniques you will use in your own research.

However, you can't learn everything in this lab and I expect you to take the necessary classes to fill in the holes in your knowledge. Today, I want you to read these manuals" She laid several handwritten manuals on the top of her desk, "On how to use the microscope, and the rest of the pertinent instruments you'll be using. All the instructions are listed there to collect data on six bats, you will put your findings in this book," She handed the dhani a paper bound black book, "You can make your own hours and schedule, but I expect you to get all the work I write on the black board done within 7 days. For now, that will likely require extremely long days. When you get more efficient with the equipment, it will take you less time. Then I will prescribe you more work." She explained rising from her chair.

"I have my own work to get to, this bench," she gestured a small desk with a cabinet at its side, "is where you may keep all your own samples, and any bats you are working on. The bats are in those jars," she gestured to the corner where several bats were laying suspended in the alcohol contained in large glass jars. Brusquely, she left Ayszel on her own.

The room was fortunately kept relatively warm by the large fireplace in every stone room, the heat retention was aided by the absence of windows. There was few buildings in Lhavit Ayszel had seen that so resembled Zinrah, so dark and warm. She settled onto the tall stool before the first piece of equipment labeled, 'Measurement Mat' and opened the black instructional booklet and her accompanying black record keeping booklet.

Flipping through the pages she saw, what she incorrectly presumed to be Kystrels sketches and measurements, sketches of something she couldn't decipher as well as tables of characteristics under each specimen. Copying the structure she labeled the top of the page with the same number on the jar she had moved to the station.

713-1

On the jar was also scrawled Lhavitian White-Nosed Bat. A stuffed version of the fluffy white bat sat behind the station with the same label. Ayszel pulled the stuffed creature toward herself turning it around slowly. It was as dream-like in its whiteness with thin yellow ears and a yellow nostril protuberance each so thin it was lined with red veining. The eyes were a small glossy black so tiny and tame Ayszel smiled to herself at the excruciating adorableness of the critter. Almost as cute as Keesha herself, she thought, thinking of the spotted raccoon waiting for her at home.

Next she created a grid like those on the previous pages, her pencil wobbling as she tried to draw straight lines. Looking around she spotted a long, perceptibly straight and flat, wooden stick to create the rest of her lines. Though they were straight they were still much more crooked than the other pages.

The grid on previous pages held a list of numbers that meant nothing to Ayszel, but she put the headings at the top in the same order as the previous page:

Total Length, Standard Length, Width, Height, Ear, Protuberance, Thigh, Lower Leg, Calcar, 2, 3, 4, 5, Arm.

Perhaps this is going to be more tedious than I anticipated... Though Ayszel didn't seek amusement or fun, but rather aptitude and perfection she was not fond of repetitive tasks such as this would prove to be. However, as she began to the slow painful act of reading common she found herself falling into the scholarly stupor that could consume a researcher who fell into complete focus while trying to be as exacting as their internal guide demanded.

White Death... Ayszel thought over it for a minute, Maybe this is why Caiyha brought me here...if this is affecting the subterranean ecology of Kalea then perhaps this is what I need to help Kystrel solve...I wonder why I didn't sense it earlier.... Little did she know that the bats wouldn't return until Spring to reproduce, for now they were much further south in the warmer temperatures of Northern Falyndar or Southern Kalea.

Ayszel glanced at the jar and heaved it up onto the long table, unscrewing the top, and pulling out the small soaking bat. It was small, only a few centimeters long, with a wrinkled white tipped nose unlike the stuffed adult she had just been handling. What happened to you little guy? She asked herself, gazing into its beady glassy eye where his soul should have been.

Lets find out whats going on... She thought to herself as she looked through the instructions. So we're going to measure you first....I'm going to assume that's to see if growth is reduced between healthy and unhealthy individuals? I wonder what measurement she's using to estimate age? Maybe this is to find out what measurement is best used to estimate age? She considered.

Assistant Level One...I'm going to assume that's me...as prestigious as it sounds. Weigh and measure bat, I’m going to assume that’s what this grid is for… Ayszel decided as she flipped through the previous notebook and found a sketch similar to the one of the fish she had used during her interview with sketched depictions of what each measurement was considered to be. The body of the bat however was much more complex and Ayszel chewed her lip, hoping she could match all the measurements on such a small heavily boned and complex critter.

REMOVE reproductive organs… Ayszel almost laughed, I’m not a surgeon…but alright. Can’t wait for instructions on how to do that… she thought, internally rolling her eyes. The rest seemed fairly straight forward though she had no idea what a stereo microscope or calipers were. Weigh! I know how to use that![/i] she thought as she recalled the scale she used for her own philtering.

Laying the bat out on the measurement grid she flipped the page for the measurement instructions. Will this help? She wondered, Caiyha led me here…but I’m not sure that this type of research is the fastest way to- the memory of her mark came back to haunt her, hovering over her shoulder, a painful reminder. What happens when you act before you think…before you know all the facts…I should tread carefully before trying to fix anything. Truly understand what is happening with this disease and these bats… she reminded herself, resisting the urge to act immediately.

It’s a good thing Kystrel found me… she thought, hubris rearing its ugly head.

Place bat on grid with the furthest tip of the wing placed at 0… Ayszel read and tried to stretch the creatures curled up wings outward. Each time she let go its wing snapped back to its original place like its skin and bones had turned to rubber. Above the bat, in one of the corners, were several wooden based pins. Hm… she thought, I can pin it In place…so long as I don’t stretch it… She considered as she picked up a pin and pushed it through the fragile wing. When it tore she replaced it closer to the limb. This time it held. Good, she thought as she placed another pin in the other wing as she stretched it out in the opposite direction.

Place the bat with chin… Ayszel looked down. The bat was facedown against the measuring placemat. Flipping it over she pinned it with its back against the surface this time and stretched the nose upward. It doesn’t hit zero…I should have checked that and the lateral measurement at the same time. she realizd. I’ll just have to subtract it, she decided, thinking back to the fish.

Okay…so measure wingtip to wingtip…0 to 7cm… she wrote into the grid in the black bound book, total length…like the fish, except this shows it as going all the way to the end of tail. I wonder why we didn’t do that with the fish… she wondered as she made the next measurement. Measure chin to tail length…that’s like the fish exactly! she tilted the head to the side so that the chin was against the grin and ran her finger to the number to the left and then did the same with the base of the tail. so…8-3=5cm… she inscribed.

This makes sense…see if the height or wingspan changes…what is the significance of the ear length though? Why would we measure that? She wondered and looked down at the book, If I’m studying this then I should make my own study notes right? Like she did… she considered and pulled a sheath of bare paper toward her writing down the questions for future research in the library or among her research.

As she measured each body length she looked up each part; the thigh, knee, toes, calcar and the placement of each finger in the wing on the sketch so she could measure it in the same way they had been measured before and made note that this specimen had white crusting on its bleached nose. All the colour had been leached from the specimen due to the method of preservation.

Ayszel placed the specimen back in the jar and removed the next specimen, repeating the same measurements. This one however was much healthier looking than the last, and without any white crusting. It was approximately the same length but its ears were significantly smaller and its rib cage was much narrower.

Interesting… She whispered internally, Those structures must therefore be integral to survival if it’s always causing death…so I need to find out what is so important about those structures…

“Be careful…” the whisper slithered up Ayszels spine raising goosebumps across her flesh when she screamed and whirled around. Hinlitt’s face was illuminated from below by the flickering candle about to die. “If you let it die, it’ll be really hard to light another one in the dark.” He pointed at the candle.

Ayszel nodded, still shaken by his sudden appearance and set up several more candles about her work station for better lighting. “Still here for any particular reason?” She asked, glancing at him warily, his cold eyes holding none of the respect Kystrels had.

“Don’t jump to conclusions. Just because you see big differences between two specimens doesn’t mean it’s going to be trend. Sometimes the reasons are more subtle. Sometimes they aren’t, but sometimes they are so you need to be careful in science.” He explained, moving back to his work station. I should have noticed him there, she scolded herself. While his figure was not imposing and she was far taller than he, his eyes held as much distaste as Rixals had when she had been run out of Zinrah by her best friend.

She turned back to her work, dread a thick molasses coating her stomach.

Ayszel read through the instructions in their entirety this time and then looked at the tiny bat with crinkled eyebrows. What’s a testicle? she wondered. She assumed It was something she shouldn’t know, she hadn’t know the anatomy of the bat for measurement either and so when she turned to ask Hinlitt she did so without hesitation.

“How do I locate the testicles?” She asked over her shoulder. An awkward silence stretched between them long enough that Ayszel wondered if he had left and turned to face him. He was gazing at her back with an expression she couldn’t place. Amusement mixed with confusion and…her finger slipped awkwardly over the interpretation.

“They’re right in front of you…” He finally answered, watching her with belligerent amusement. Though she wasn’t keen enough to pick up on the cleverness of the reply, the seeking of how little or much she knew she could tell by the twitching mouth that he was up to something unsaid.

“…Mm…It’s so tiny…I’m not sure I’m correct?” She offered what she hoped was a plausible excuse.

Standing at her side Hinlitt pointed at the two very small round pouches on the lower half of the bat. “Those are the testicles…do you need help removing them?” He eventually asked, hiding a chuckle.

“If you have the time…” She wasn’t sure she liked the twinkle in his eyes any more than the anger it had replaced.

“So you’re a virgin?” He asked as he collected a variety of tools from around the lab. “Y-“ He sounds amused….am I too old in human form to be a virgin? In Dhani culture I’m hardly old enough to begin experimenting sexually…I’m not that far behind am I?

“N-no…of course not,” She lied, faking an amused laugh and watching his face carefully.

“Mmhmm…” He replied sarcastically, “You don’t know what testicles are…either you’re a virgin or a very bad lover,” He addressed, as brashly as Kystrel. Maybe he is more like Kystrel than he lets on...or maybe his brashness is the redeeming quality in her eyes considering his apparent lack of willingness to pursue his endeavours regardless of others.

Okay so…I should be more experienced as a human then… she decided, trying to keep the heat from her cheeks. “Or perhaps it isn’t men I like,” She replied snidely, “Shall we get back to work?” His eyebrows rose, surprised before he settled on a stool beside her to work through the process.

‘The testicles are contained inside a pouch of skin. Sometimes they fall back into a cavity behind the pouch of skin when placed on their back. You might have to press into the body just above the pouch to pop them back into the pouch. A little trick I figured out back when this was MY job,”

“Oh…these are your notes?” She asked, gesturing to the immaculate sketches and detailing in the previous pages.

“Yah, but don’t worry,” he added, noting her frown, “You’ll get that good too. Look at the earlier pages,” He gestured. Flipping to the earliest recordings she was glad to see they looked eerily similar to her own. Wiggling lines, no sketches and many blacked out mistakes.

“I’m not worried,” She assured, “I’m perfectly capable.” She added a nod towards the boat earlier.

“Evidently…but just because you can con your way in here doesn’t mean you’ll be good at the job. You might be able to get away with it at first, when I’m the one supervising you. But eventually, Kystrel will notice you aren’t up to par. Not unless you dedicate your entire life to this career…and even that…that isn’t always enough. You need talent. Your first dedication is to Caiyha, you have made that abundantly clear to both me and Kystrel. She’s using you for your gnosis, we’ve reached a dead end in this research and she thinks your…gift…will help. That’s the only reason you’re around. So don’t get cosy.” He warned.

Well I knew that already…why else would she stop someone she didn’t even know and offer them an interview…she stared at my gnosis the entire time. I’m not here for a lifetime career. My lifetime career is to serve Caiyha…if anything, I am using her as much as she is using me… Ayszel thought. Though his words might have struck a painful cord in someone pursuing a career in science, for Ayszel it was a soothing balm on her ego, This research can’t go any further without me.

“So how do I take them out?” She changed the topic with a cocky smile that belayed her knowledge.

Picking up what he called a scalpel Hinlitt reached out and gestured a small line above the scrotum, “You will cut a small line in front of the testicles,” he explained, making the cut. “Then you’ll push the testicles around and out through the hole, there might be some fat you have to cut through to get it out. In this little guy there isn’t a whole bunch. It depends on when we collected them how much fat deposit there is.”

“Then you’ll cut these ligaments here to free the testicle, it’ll slip out of it pretty easily, so you’ll know when you’ve cut all the way through,” he demonstrated, “you’ll tie the blood vessels shut here and here,” he gestured, “and then cut the testicle off completely.” Ayszel watched each step carefully. Seems simple enough… She decided, taking the scalpel from him and moving to the next male bat.

Ayszel Spreads Her Wings in Lab

She had number and measured several bats by now and despite his warnings about reading too much into obvious trends she was excited to notice a very clear disparity in the dimensions of those afflicted and those unafflicted. But are they like this BECAUSE of the disease or is it making them more susceptible to the disease? she wondered. Unfortunately she was too new to scientific thought and the dynamics of ecology to wonder about the potential natural role of the disease. It was an enemy, an enemy she could only thwart...and so it would consume the next two years of her life, until she could find a cure.

Once done measuring she stared down at the largest bat she'd measured, Start easy... she decided. The testicles were inside the sac and so she made an incision just above the pouch as directed. Pressing gently at first it only tore through the first layer of skin. Pressing harder the next time she watched as a pool of yellow spilled out from the wound. His didn't do that...

"You cut too deep, you cut the urethra. Where urine flows." He elaborated in response to her furrowing brow. He's a good teacher, she thought grudgingly. "It'll make a mess but it wont affect the results," He assured. Wrinkling her nose as the ammonia scent of the urine coated her hands Ayszel continued with the procedure, trying to hook the testicles out of the hole was much more difficult than he made it appear but eventually, with much cutting she managed to pull them out. With much less sophistication than Hinlitt.

Ayszel finished the cutting and extraction of the testicles, placing with with a grunt of triumph on the counter along with those that Hinlitt had extracted. One down...many many more to go... she thought wearily as the night stretched out of the sparkling diamond of Kalea. But here, life was timeless, life went on and though she worked long into the night so were hundreds of others on their way to work.
