The caravan rolled steadily on, up and over the edge of the small hill. In the back of the dark and dusty wagon beneath the canvased top Alex sat huddled the memory of what happened fresh in his mind. His father out on the edge of the caravan with the scouts looking out for bandits. He was bitter, sad and alone. He was So far from all he knew, from all he cared about. Flung to a new city a new place. All he’d ever known left behind to him. The bandages on his arm still fresh beneath his shirt. Tears plied at the corners of his eyes again. Thrust out of safety and familiarity into a world completely new to him. Why…Why’d you have to go? He buried his head in his arms againas the carriage rattled hard over the hill again.

Jolting him out of his self-pitying stupor he caught the flash of rooftops from between the flaps of the caravan’s canvas. He shuffled forwards to peek his head out of the open edge. The glinting sun clipped his eyes stinging the tear stained ridges and the redness of his eyes. Squinting he caught sight of the rooves of the city he’d spent days travelling to. The low hanging sun blinding over the white snows covering the rooftop shales of Nyka’s rooves. A sense of deep panic hit him, where was he? How far from home was he? He started to breathe hard his fingers gripping the canvas tightly. He was the only one on this caravan who didn’t know everyone else. He only knew his father. And even then he wished he didn’t.

He slowly retreated into the covers, He picked up the loop of wooden sigils his father had given him. The only memento of his mother he had left. He ran over the sigils on his loop. Memorizing the names and symbols. He sat stock still in the silence of the caravan. His eyes focused intently on the small wooden symbols. The ticks turned to chimes and the chimes to bells. The seventeen gods on his mother’s loop. Each one pertaining to something different. Still with the size of the symbols he couldn’t get over the feeling that when he saw his mother wearing it that there were more. Pondering this he was suddenly jolted back to reality. They’d arrived at the city. He tossed the loop over his head and tucked it into his shirt for fear that people might try to take it from him. And he’d loose his only connection to his past.

Stepping out of the caravan’s darkened interior, the blinding light of Syna glaring off the white rooftops. He closed his eyes tight instinctually opening them only slightly and very gradually to try and adjust to the sheer blinding light. Cringing back he shrank away from the light not quite ready to step into the light but afraid to head back into the darkness. Alex brought his hand up to shield his eyes from the glaring light from above. It still did little to the reflection. Squinting into the distance he heard a voice behind him.
“Boy. Move.” His father had arrived on horseback within several feet of him and was telling him to move. To head into the city. Alex glanced around. Within the city walls he felt…Odd. Each small step was something that weighed on him. Stepping into the blinding light of the city.
“Dad…It’s odd here. Something’s not right.” Alex looked up at his father on horseback and was met with a glance of apprehension. This city felt like someplace he wouldn’t be welcomed. Or at least wouldn’t ever feel quite at home. Looking through the narrow streets of the city he was people wandering around. Large blades and other long polearms strapped to them, all hidden within large billowing armour plated robes.

Alex shrank back hiding against the horse his father rode on. “Dad I’m scared.” Alex looked up to see the stony face of his father.
“Alexander Kravenedge. You will stand tall and proud.” The hard blue eyes of his father pierced into him. With a small shrink Alex pulled back and tried to stand tall and proud like his father wanted. All he wanted to do was crunch down and shrink away from the problems around him. He darted his eyes back and forth looking around trying to take in the basis of the new surroundings. Alex slipped his hand into his shirt and pulled out one of the icons on the loop. A small triangle blacker than the darkest night, even the light of the glaring snows and Syna-light. Rolling the symbol between his fingers he somehow felt a little better like he wasn’t being as heavily watched. Maybe the symbols were good luck? Or perhaps since they were the icons of gods and this was a religious city it looked normal?

Alex glanced around the city as he walked through it slowly. Looking at his father he got a small nod saying it was ok for him to go off on his own for a bit. His bow slung over his shoulder, quiver and dagger at his belt. Alex walked through the open streets something off with him. Something looming over his shoulders. Something didn’t feel quite right. Alex glanced about himself trying to find the source. It almost felt like he was being watched. And then it hit him. The monks. Almost every corner he turned there as one. Something about them seemed…rigid. Unflinching. He was being watched carefully as people assumed and were right that he was an outsider. And given his lightness of foot. A stealthy one.

Odds were they were mistaking him for a thief. It was highly possible. However that wasn’t what he was doing. He was staying quiet and away from causing a ruckus just to stay out of trouble. He began to explore the northern quarter of Nyka. A place it seemed was designed for war. Or at the very least battle of some kind. Alex slid around the corners darting through the city, these monks here looked extra grumpy and like they would take no lip from anyone least of all a foreigner and a newcomer. Out of the corner of his eye he spotted something a flash of purple silks, and before he could spot the full sight of it, the cloth was gone. As he turned to walk away from it he caught sight of the tail end of a robe again purple. Now he was interested if not a little worried but against his better judgement he chased after it, keeping low and slow and quiet but chased he did.

The purple robed figure lead him on a wild goose chase starting from the north gate and leading him to a massive maze. A huge zig zag of stone. Alex stepped through the stone confusion, getting ever closer to seeing the full figure of the robes but always catching the tail end. Eventually he rounded a corner and the figure turned to look at him. A small wave came from the figure as he drew closer though with every step he took towards her she stepped backwards. And as she pressed into the wall, she began to phase through it. Alex ran towards her but as his fingers were about to touch the edge of the robe she vanished through and his palm met the stone.

Backing up Alex took a full run at the wall stepping a foot on it to help him haul himself up over the edge of the wall scrambling against her stone work. As he peeked his head over the edge of the stone he caught sight of the figure walking away.
