1 Spring, 516AV

There was a bite to the air as Asarni opened the flap to her private tent; the Drykas shivered, making a displeased place. Isn't Winter supposed to be over? she thought bitterly as she stepped through the opening in the tent to move to her family's Pavilion, following the scent of cooking food. Breakfast was usually a simple affair in the Zelluni Pavilion, and today was no different. The Clans had finally made it to their spring grounds, and as this was an even year, they would be traveling a bit farther to the northwest than they did in the odd years, to help keep their pace even. Later on in the season, just before the Summer season began, Endrykas would pass by Kenash, but that was still a long ways off. They were passing by Riverfall at the moment, and Asarni knew that there were a lot of people in Endrykas that were eager to trade and receive news; there was little news of the rest of the world to be had in the Sea of Grass unless one was close to a major city.

Asarni dawdled a little over breakfast, not particularly wanting to leave the warmth of her family's Pavilion. Ultimately, however, she was driven out by her own mother, scolding her about being late for her job that she'd had for less than a season. "You need to make a good impression," Asarni grumbles, kicking at a patch of grass as she walks across to the Opal Clan part of Endrykas, making her way to the Healing Hoof. She wove in and out of the various tents and pavilions as she went, eventually coming to the tent she sought. Inside were Denhal Tenderbloom and his son; the other healers would be arriving soon, Asarni knew. "Hello," she greeted, signing her respect for her elder and employer. "What is planned for today?"

"We must check on the pregnant Striders," Denhal answered, gesturing with one hand to his son as he signed with the other. "I will need both you and Kehal to help."

Asarni and Kehal exchanged looks; the two were tentative friends, thanks to the need to be able to trust one another when handling sick and injured animals. Those animals sometimes had a tendency to react unpredictably to even the most mundane of stimulations, and the two Drykas needed to know that the other would be where they needed to be. "We will help," Asarni says, and Kehal nods in agreement. "Which Clan will we look at first?"

"The Amethyst Clan has the most pregnant Striders, so we will go there first," Denhal explains. "I expect no problems, but one can never be certain."

Asarni and Kehal nodded in understanding, and began gathering the items that they would need for the examinations that Denhal had planned for the day; it was definitely going to be a long day, because inevitably something else would come up before the day was done; now that Winter was done, all of the animals of Endrykas were eager for warmer weather and a chance to stretch their legs once more.

"Easy, trewal," Asarni murmured to the mare she was standing next to; Denhal was waiting for the fractious mare, a first-time mother, to settle down. This mare belonged to Asarni's Pavilion, thankfully, though usually Tidyn was the one to handle her. Today, however, the Ankhal of the Zelluni Pavilion was trading in another part of Endrykas, and while he would be back before Denhal and his assistants left, he was not present at the moment to help with the nervous mare. "Easy, that's a good girl," Asarni crooned, stroking one hand soothingly down the mare's neck as her other rested lightly on the bridge of her nose, scratching lightly at the swirl of fur between her eyes. The mare blew out another anxious breath, hooves dancing nervously on the turf beneath them as her tail swished from side to side. Asarni kept herself calm, speaking in a quiet, soothing voice, and gradually the mare settled down until she was only giving the occasional head-toss.

Denhal nodded to Asarni, who smiled slightly before returning her attention to the mare, continuing to croon in a mixture of Pavi and common tongue, reaching back with one hand to scratch at the top of the mare's withers; the mare reacted to the calming gesture the way that Asarni had hoped she would, with tension bleeding from her stance until the mare's eyes were half-closed and her head was bobbing slightly. Scratching the withers was what horses did while grooming each other to bond, and it was also a gesture that mares used on their foals to help calm the young ones. It was not always effective on older horses, but Asarni had been hoping that this mare was still young enough for it to benefit the Drykas.

Asarni continued the gesture, scratching lightly at the mare's withers as Denhal completed his examination; it took several chimes, and by the end the mare was getting nervous again, but before she could lash out or try to run away, the healer stepped away, nodding to Asarni who immediately started making a fuss over the mare, praising her and rubbing her forehead, allowing her fingers to curl so that the mare could press against her hand and use it to scratch an itch. "What a good girl," Asarni crooned, patting the mare's neck. "What a sweetheart, yes you are, trewal. Here you go." The Drykas produced a piece of chopped apple, feeding it to the mare who practically inhaled the treat.

"How is she?" Asarni asked, turning the mare loose; she trotted off, round belly swinging with her movement, and Asarni could not help her smile.

"Very pregnant," Denhal says with a grin. "But doing well. I would like to keep an eye on her; I fear the foal may be getting too big for her to handle, should he not leave the womb in time."

Asarni winced; she knew what Denhal meant; if the foal was too big, he could very well tear something on the way out, and they would have no way to heal the horse in time to save her life. This mare was a promising broodmare, though she'd yet to bond to a Drykas, and Asarni's father hoped to breed many good foals from her. "We will keep an eye on her," Asarni promised; Denhal nodded.

"Good. Now, on to the next one."
