The Diamond of Kalea is located on Kalea's extreme west coast and called as such because its completely made of a crystalline substance called Skyglass. Home of the Alvina of the Stars, cultural mecca of knowledge seekers, and rife with Ethaefal, this remote city shimmers with its own unique light.

Springwater Square

Springwater Square

The social centerpiece of Shinyama Peak and its most select district, Springwater Square is an ornately-carved half circle of arches, that surround a grand gadget-driven fountain at its center. An elaborate set of metal fences adorn an upper walkway, where statues of various deities converge, their pondering gazes ever watchful over the Lhavitian citizens that gather below.

The gathering area comprises a large open expanse of land that sits before the fountain, most noticeable for it's cerulean blue skyglass flooring, which shifts to a deeper azure by night. This open plaza finds itself home to a makeshift market of sorts, where traders and merchants arriving by sea offer their wares from carts and stalls. Likewise, performance artists inhabit the area mostly by night, inciting laughter and entertainment with a variety of acts and displays. While the night time vibe is one of joyous frivolity, a looming sentinel of a building sits to the east. The Shinyama Pavilion serves as both home to the city's formidable guard, and a constant deterrent to would be trouble makers.

The fountain though is the main attraction, and is perhaps Springwater Square’s most beloved and recognizable feature. A true work of art, the intrinsically designed fountain hurls myriad jets high into the air from elaborately-carved figurines, most of which resemble the more popular denizens of the Misty Peaks, such as wolves and bears. There is of course a smattering of Lhavit's own heraldic beast, the okomo. The overseeing statues higher up consist mostly of Zintila, Syna, Leth and Tanroa, with a few other notable Ethaefal for good measure. Thousands of gallons of water churn about the fountain, falling elegantly in tumbling streamers before being thrust forever skywards by the blind striving of hidden, secret machinery.

Indeed, quite aside from serving as a focal gathering point, a place for the citizens to congregate, to chat and lounge on the wide lip of the fountain bowl and to paddle in the sweet, clear water, Springwater Square's fountain serves a rather more vital function. Much of Lhavit’s water is abstracted from the mighty Amaranthine as it thunders between the Sharai and Shinyama peaks on its way to the sea near Port Tranquil, and the fountain serves as the wellhead.

It's a very visible barometer of the pressure in the enormous animated pumps, that perpetually haul water from the river and into the myriads of underground cisterns and pipes that keep the city plentifully supplied with its lifeblood. The city government keeps a careful eye on the height of the fountain’s jets; any real discrepancy is cause for a select team to enter the labyrinth of pumps and pipes below-ground to search for any damage or foul play.

The Fountainhead, underneath the Square itself, is accessed through a small, unprepossessing domed building on the westernmost side of the Square. A short descent via ladder ends in a gently sloping, spiraling skyglass tunnel, blasted out of the mountain by House Dawn’s reimancers when the peak was first settled, curving around a core of, currently, sixteen enormous pumps and two vast cisterns containing emergency water supplies.

Due to the magical construction of the caverns, all regions of the Fountainhead are spacious and also light due to the glowing skyglass reinforcement, creating a good working environment for the gadgeteers and animators who maintain the machinery on which the city depends.

The Jugged Hare

The Jugged Hare

The Jugged Hare is a combination butcher shop and prepared meat dishes establishment – something like a meat pie shop where you can also purchase game meat to cook yourself. The populace of the city has a ready source of fish and farm raised meats, but the Jugged Hare fills a small niche of catering to those who prefer wild game, such as venison, wild boar, mountain sheep, hare, etc.

What’s on offer may vary day to day and season to season, depending on what the local hunters are able to bring in and what type of game is abundant. Named after the traditional dish of a hare cut into portions and stewed in a tightly covered jug with red wine and juniper berries, (and the hare’s blood if that’s to your taste), the owners prepare a number of tasty dishes – casseroles, pies, pasties and sausages – as well as selling the raw product, whole or in cuts, for the customer to take home and whip up into their own favorite dish.

While the daytime hours see a steady flow of customers - the usual assortment of cooks, chefs and stay at home mom's with mouths to feed - the Jugged Hare takes on a more flamboyant tone under Leth's night sky. Tables and chairs are set up out front, while fresh ale brewed in the backroom provides lubrication for already high spirited townsfolk. The establishment is, after all, strategically located just off of Springwater Square, the peak's central location for Lhavitian night life.

Despite being one of Lhavit's busier shops, the Jugged Hare finds just two people in its employ, Varda and Lomki Samlinc. Varda began cooking as a little girl, learning from both her mother and grandmother. Her parents ran a tavern and she also learned to be a good hostess, how to drum up business and how to negotiate a good deal with their suppliers. She married Lomki Samlinc, the son of a butcher, and together they opened up their own business, which they have run together for the past 37 years.

It began as a traditional butcher shop, but soon they discovered an unfilled niche, that of providing game meat to the citizens of the city. With Varda’s cookery skills, they soon added another dimension to their shop – providing already prepared game dishes. Though they work closely as a team, Varda takes the lead with both selling and buying, and is the true business woman of the operation, while Lomki seems more than happy with his role as 'head brewer'!

The Obsidian Club

Postby Orkestar on August 14th, 2016, 5:03 am

The Obsidian Club

Lhavit prides itself on its identity as a multi-cultural melting pot, and where better to experience varied styles of music and song from around the world than at The Obsidian Club? So named for its unique darkened tone of skyglass for its roof, the Obsidian is a two story building that finds itself sitting among the much coveted locations along the border of Springwater Square. This alone enhances business; though the Obsidian's popularity as it is, it might fair just as well on any of the other five peaks.

Upon entering the club, one is met with the more common traditions of any good tavern or inn, a series of sturdy tables and benches, usually made from something tough like oak, and discolored from years of spillage. Serving girls hastily traverse the floor, ensuring mugs are kept filled and patrons satisfied. A small bar sits on the far wall, a center for mixology to be demonstrated with flair, as all manner of daring and exotic cocktails are mixed, shaken and stirred. On the same back wall, a space has been cordoned off into a stage area, specifically for the many musical acts that pass through Lhavit courtesy of the harbor at the foot of the peaks. The Obsidian also maintains a quota of local acts, though in keeping with the city's penchant for 'foreign flavors', these too are rotated to keep things fresh and varied.

A corner based staircase leads up to the second story, a corridor finding itself punctuated with four doors. The first three, spaced evenly on the length of the corridor, keep behind them private rooms for hire at a reasonable rate. Available for hire for either a day or a night, (usually the latter), each room ensures a dedicated server, as well as a selection of party foods ideal for all manner of gatherings and shindigs. The fourth door is clearly marked 'Staff Only', and leads to simple furnished rooms inhabited by the club's owners and, space permitting, any of the workers in need of a roof over their heads.

The Obsidian Club is owned and run by Charlie and Bob Kacee, brothers heralding from Alvadas who had decided a less illusion-filled city was more their scene. Charlie, the older of the two brothers, maintains the books, deals with finances, and any other duties fitting of his station as general manager. A quiet man with an expressionless face, Charlie isn't known for his chit chat. Bob meanwhile is more hands on, proving a popular and adept host, as well as an expert mixologist. His thunderous laugh is often heard rolling across the room, while the man is considered to be rather easy on the eyes. Certainly a more fitting choice as the face of the Obsidian Club.

Perhaps most interesting about the pair - it should be noted this is strictly rumor - is how they came to acquire the lease to the Obsidian, given its prime location on the Shinyama Peak. While those rumors are only whispered in dark corners, the theory goes that either Charlie or Bob proved quite persuasive when dealing with the previous owners, owners who have in fact not been seen or heard of since. Of course, less superstitious folk might assume those owners simply left Lhavit for ventures new.

Maybe.
